The post Veteran D Tony DeAngelo Bought Out By the Flyers, Becomes a Free Agent appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>DeAngelo was set to earn $5 million in the final year of his two-year deal with the Flyers. He now becomes the first player in NHL history to be bought out twice after New York Rangers bought him out in 2021.
The Flyers originally acquired DeAngelo in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes last summer. He contributed with 11 goals and 31 assists for a total of 42 points in 70 games he played in 2022-23. However, the 27-year-old player never got comfortable with the Flyers and had multiple run-ins with the coaching staff.
After the season ended, the Flyers made a trade with the Hurricanes to send DeAngelo back to Carolina while retaining 50% of his salary. However, due to NHL CBA rules about teams reacquiring players on lower cap hits, the league nixed the trade.
DeAngelo, who has 199 points in 340 games as a pro, could now sign with the Canes as a free agent. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if several other NHL teams in need of a veteran defenseman join the mix.

]]>The Rangers confirmed on Sunday that DeAngelo was placed on waivers, which effectively ended his stint with the organization. He is set to become a free agent since no other team has yet claimed him.
The Rangers didn’t want to get into the details of their decision, with head coach David Quinn saying that the organization decided it was best if the two sides go their separate ways.
“Things happen in pro sports, and that was a decision the organization made,” said Quinn. “It’s part of the business. It’s a decision we made. We’ll see how it plays out.”
According to reports, however, the Rangers parting ways with Tony DeAngelo has something to do with his problematic behavior and performance struggles in the 2020-21 NHL season. This included a recent altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev and an inability to be productive when on the ice.
DeAngelo, who was the 19th overall pick in 2014, enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2019-20 in which he scored 15 goals and 38 assists. This season, however, he only has one assist and no goals in six games.

]]>The Rangers made it a priority to sign DeAngelo so that they could avoid an arbitration hearing that was scheduled for next week. New York currently has a little less than $11 million left in cap space and two important players to sign, Brendan Lemieux and Ryan Strome.
Both Strome and Lemieux need to be signed before early November in order to avoid arbitration. The Rangers also signed goaltender Alexander Georgiev two a two-year deal this week.
Earlier reports claimed that the Rangers would be using DeAngelo as trade bait since they have several other young prospects in the system that fit the bill as right-handed defenders. However, DeAngelo’s versatility and ability to potentially play on the left side as well makes him a valuable asset to the team.
DeAngelo has also shown offensive prowess, scoring 15 goals and 53 points last season, which was the most scored by a Rangers defenseman since Brian Leetch scored 21 goals almost 20 years ago.
DeAngelo is also a charismatic player and a fan favorite with a personality that fits perfectly with the New York market, making him an asset in that sense as well.

]]>Despite another very strong performance by their young goaltender of the future, Igor Shestyorkin, the Rangers lost by a score of 4-1 in Game 3 of the qualifier.
The go-ahead goal came on a shot by Brady Skjei, a former Ranger, that Warren Foegele deflected past Shesterkin to take a 2-1 lead in the third period. The game was sealed with a beautiful goal by Carolina’s Sebastian Aho and an empty-netter by Tony DeAngelo in the last minute of the contest.
The young Rangers team made a lot of strides in the second half of the season but were ultimately no match for a more seasoned Carolina team, one that made it to Eastern Conference finals last year.
On the positive side, the defeat gives the Rangers a much better shot of coming away with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft. New York now has a 12.5% chance of landing the first pick in the second round of the lottery, which will take place on August 10.
