Colorado Rockies have been rather quiet on the free-agent market this offseason but still managed to make a big move over the weekend. According to reports, Rockies have agreed to a deal with their shortstop Trevor Story that will keep the 27-year-old All-Star with the organization for two more years. With this deal, the two sides managed to avoid the arbitration.

Story, who played 145 games with Colorado in 2019, hitting .294 with 35 home runs and 85 RBIs, inked a deal that will pay him $27.5 million. He will receive a $2 million signing bonus and is set to earn $8 million in 2020. His annual salary jumps to $17.5 million in 2021, after which he will become a free agent. Reportedly, the two sides haven’t discussed a long-term deal at any point.

Rockies are hoping that Story will help them bounce back from a disappointing campaign last season when they posted a 71-91 record and missed the playoffs. Their chances of doing so will, however, largely depend on the situation with star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Reportedly, Arenado is unhappy in Colorado and wants out, while the team would also consider trading him if the right offer comes along.

Trevor Story spent his entire career with the Rockies, where he made his MLB debut in 2016. Since then, he made two All-Star appearances and earned two Silver Slugger Awards. Story, who is the fastest shortstop in MLB history to reach 100 home runs, has a career .276 batting average with 123 homers and 347 RBIs.
