Transfer window has been closed for some time now in all major European leagues, but La Liga side Atletico Madrid still managed to add a quality player. The club announced on Tuesday that they have acquired midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, signing the player to a four-year deal from Valencia.

Atletico was able to pull off the deal thanks to special permission granted to them by La Liga after Arsenal activated Thomas Partey’s release clause on the deadline day. They were allowed to sign a replacement for Partey if they do it in the next four weeks and if their target plays in Spain at that moment.

While Atletico didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal, it is believed that Valencia will receive around $12 million for Kondogbia. The value of the deal could go up to $17 million with add-ons.

“A talented player arrives at Atletico Madrid, with great physical power that makes him rule the centre of the field,” said the club in an official statement announcing the move. “His good ball stealing also makes him stand out when it comes to intercepting opponent’s attacking plays, making him a very complete midfielder both for defensive tasks and for cutting-edge work when mounting counter-attacks.”

Geoffrey Kondogbia’s move away from Valencia was in the making for some time now as the 27-year-old player became unhappy with some of the club’s recent moves and overall lack of ambition. This included tearing apart a talented roster and saying goodbye to Dani Parejo, Rodrigo, and Ferran Torres.

Kondogbia initially joined Valencia on loan from Inter Milan in 2017, before making the move permanent next year. He previously also played with Lens, Sevilla, and Monaco.

Valencia has found a new head coach after parting ways with Albert Celades following a disappointing 2019/20 season. La Liga side recently confirmed that Javi Garcia, former Watford and Malaga manager, will take over the club permanently.

According to the club’s official announcement, Garcia inked a two-year deal with Valencia. He was jobless since September when he was fired by Watford after opening the season with just one point in four games.

“I believe that I am in an exceptional place,” said Garcia during his introductory press conference. “I am fortunate to be able to coach at this club. I am here today coaching Valencia CF thanks to all of those clubs and players who I have overseen, who have helped me to be who I am. For me, Valencia CF are my team now, and I am going to defend the club above anything else.”

Garcia will be Valencia’s fourth manager in less than a year. The club entered the 2019/20 with Marcelino at the helm but decided to part ways with the 54-year-old Spaniard after just three games into the season. Celades took over from him, posting a 36.59 winning percentage in 41 games before being fired as well. Finally, Salvador González “Voro” guided the club to the end of the season on an interim basis.

Javi Garcia worked all over Europe during his managerial career, coaching clubs like Pontevedra, Cádiz, Olympiacos Volou, Almeria, Rubin Kazan, and Watford among others. His biggest success was winning Segunda División B with both Pontevedra and Cádiz, as well as being FA Cup runner-up with Watford.

An interesting curiosity about Garcia is that he never spent more than two years with one club.

After the final whistle at the Benito Villamarín Stadium in Sevilla blew, Valencia’s players collapsed on the ground. It was partially due to exhaustion on a hot night in southern Spain, and partially because they could hardly believe what they had just done.

Valencia shocked Barcelona by a 2-1 final to claim the Copa del Rey, the club’s first major title in 11 years.

The Chés jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on to take home the victory in the cup final despite a second-half Leo Messi goal.

Valencia, which finished 4th in La Liga this season, got on the board first with a stunning Kevin Gameiro strike in the 21st minute that Barça keeper Jasper Cillessen couldn’t get to.

They took a 2-0 advantage when Rodrigo Moreno headed in a cross from Carlos Soler only 12 minutes later.

Barça tried desperately to generate chances in the second half of the game, but Valencia’s back line held solid. The only goal that Barcelona managed to score was after a bar bounced off of the post and to Leo Messi after a corner.

Valencia’s win ends Barcelona’s four-year reign as the champions of Spain’s domestic tournament. It’s their first Copa del Rey trophy since the 2009 edition.

Two big English teams face challenges in the semi-finals, as Chelsea faces Eintracht Frankfurt and Arsenal matches up with Valencia.

Chelsea advanced to the semi-finals of the competition after a crazy game with Slavia Prague at Stamford Bridge. They won a back-and-forth affair by a 4-3 final and advanced to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the final.

The German club that they’ll face came back from a 4-2 deficit against Benfica to win 2-0 at home and advance to the first Europa League semi-final since the 1979-80 season.

The other matchup will pit Arsenal against Spanish club Valencia. Arsenal cruised to the semis in a tough matchup against Napoli, winning 0-1 on an Alexandre Lacazette goal on Thursday night.

They’ll match up against a Valencia side that made easy work of Villarreal in the quarter-finals. Their participation in the Europa League comes after they began the season competing in the group stages of the Champions League.

The Europa League ties will begin on Thursday, May 2nd and conclude on Thursday, May 9th.
