The Vancouver Canucks announced on Saturday that they have agreed to an eight-year extension with their All-Star forward Elias Pettersson.

The news comes after weeks of speculations about Pettersson’s future. He was set to enter restricted free agency after the 2023-24 campaign, and there was a loud chatter that the Canucks might trade him if he didn’t sign a new deal.

However, the two sides managed to come to an agreement that will see Pettersson earn $92.8 million in the next eight years while also getting a no-movement clause starting the 2025-26 season. His deal comes with an average annual value of $11.6 million, marking the fifth-highest cap hit in the NHL.

Pettersson, who serves as an alternate captain for the Canucks, has 29 goals and 46 assists for a total of 75 points in 62 games this season.

“I am very happy to be continuing my career as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. I love this city and playing in front of the fans. We have an exciting group and believe we can do good things in the future,” Pettersson said in a statement.

Elias Pettersson made his debut with the Canucks in 2018–19. Since then, he played 387 games, contributing 398 points (165 goals and 233 assists). Pettersson won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2019 and has four All-Star appearances.

The Vancouver Canucks emerged as the favorites to sign veteran winger Phil Kessel. The three-time Stanley Cup champion is set to work out with Vancouver’s AHL affiliate Abbotsford Canucks and is expected to be offered a deal if everything checks out.

Canucks’ general manager Patrik Allvin confirmed that Kessel will have a workout with Abbotsford earlier this week.

“He’s going to go down there and skate for two or three days,” said Allvin. “We’ll see how he is down there and reevaluate from there.”

If Kessel ends up signing with the Canucks, it would be on a team-friendly deal. They currently have around $650,000 in free cap space.

Kessel would likely provide depth and championship experience to the Canucks’ team that feels ready to win it all this year. They are currently sitting first in the Pacific Division and have the NHL’s best record at 36-12-6.

Phil Kessel previously played with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Arizona Coyotes, and Vegas Golden Knights. He has 1,286 NHL games and 992 points under his belt while making three All-Star appearances.

Kessel spent the 2022-23 season with the Golden Knights, helping the franchise to win its first Stanley Cup. He played in all 82 regular season games, scoring 14 goals and dishing 22 assists for a total of 36 points.

The Vancouver Canucks have announced on Saturday that they have acquired forward Vitali Kravtsov in a trade with the New York Rangers. As part of the deal, the Canucks gave up forward Will Lockwood and a seventh-round pick in 2026.

The news comes after Kravtsov requested a trade from the Rangers in early February. The 23-year-old appeared in 28 games in NHL this season, contributing with three goals and three assists for a total of six points. However, he hasn’t played for the New York team in more than two weeks.

“We are excited to add Vitali’s combination of size and skill to our group,” said Canucks’ general manager Patrik Allvin in a statement. “He is a smart player and a former first-round pick with a good set of skills. We look forward to welcoming him to Vancouver to continue developing his game with our coaching staff.”

Kravtsov had a strained relationship with the Rangers organization for a while now. Despite being taken ninth overall in 2018, he had trouble getting on the ice and requested to be traded several times. He will leave New York with just 58 games with the organization under his belt.

Lockwood, on the other hand, has only 15 NHL games since being taken in the third round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He is yet to play a game this season and has zero NHL points in his career.

The New York Islanders made a big swing in an attempt to return to the playoffs after missing out on the postseason in 2021-22. The franchise just acquired All-Star forward Bo Horvat, who will come to New York in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks.

According to the Islanders’ official announcement, the move cost them forward Anthony Beauvillier, prospect Aatu Raty and a conditional first-rounder in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

Horvat was on the trade block since December after rejecting an extension offer from the Canucks. He is set to become a free agent this summer and is likely to command a new contract that will be at the top of the market. The Islanders traded for him without any reassurance that he’ll remain long-term, being focused on the impact that the 27-year-old player can have for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign.

“You make this type of a transaction because you can improve your team today and tomorrow,” Islanders’ general manager Lou Lamoriello said after the trade was confirmed. “And in my opinion, he makes us a better team and gives us a better opportunity to [do] what we want to do.”

The Islanders failed to reach the playoffs last season after three-straight postseason trips. The New York team is currently in the hunt for the last wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with a 25-22-5 record. They trail two points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins but have played three more games.

Bo Horvat is in the middle of an outstanding campaign, having scored 31 goals alongside 23 assists in 2022-23. He is already at 54 points in 49 games and is on pace to top his career-high of 61 points he had during the 2018-19 season.

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko will be sidelined for six weeks after incurring a lower-body injury. The player was forced to leave the ice early during the Canucks’ 5-1 home loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

Late in the first period, Demko was unable to put any weight on his right leg and needed help getting to the sidelines. The injury appeared to occur when Demko stretched out his right pad when trying to stop Ryan Lomberg’s goal 47 seconds before the buzzer.

“A lot of teams have lot of injuries, and we’ll overcome and we’ll be better for it, and he’ll be better for it in the end when he’s healthy,” Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau commented on Saturday. Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes expressed his support, stating that the team is looking forward to the day that Demko returns to the lineup.

Demko is 3-10-2 with a 3.93 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage this season. He was replaced during the Panthers game by Spencer Martin, who made 12 saves in Demko’s absence.

Boudreau praised Martin’s performance during the Panthers’ defeat, describing him as a hardworking and competitive player.

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired the services of defenseman Ethan Bear and forward Lane Pedersen in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. In exchange, the Hurricanes will receive the Canucks’ fifth-round NHL draft pick.

“We’re pleased to have added an established defenseman to our blue line,” Canucks general manager Patrik Alvin said regarding the arrival of Bear. “It gives the coaching staff another option with his right shot, his ability to move pucks, and his ability to get the puck out of our own end quick. [Bear’s] transition game has been something that I’ve watched over the years that I like.”

Bear has also proven to be a strong asset going forward, with five goals and nine assists in 58 games for the Hurricanes last season. Carolina will retain $400,000 of the 25-year-old player’s $2.2 million contract which is set to expire at the end of the current season.

Pedersen has appeared in 44 NHL games for the Arizona Coyotes and the San Jose Sharks, scoring a goal and bagging four assists. Prior to the trade, the 25-year-old Pedersen last represented the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League.

The NHL strongly believes that teams from Canada will be able to play games at home in the 2020-21 season. This was confirmed to reporters on Thursday by Bill Daly, the league’s deputy commissioner.

According to Daly, the NHL recently had discussions with the provincial health authorities and managed to get clearance for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets to compete in their home arenas.

“On the basis of our discussions in the past week, as well as our exchange of correspondence over the last 24 hours, we believe we are aligned and in agreement on the conditions on which each of our Canadian franchises can begin play in their own buildings for the start of the 2020-21 NHL season,” said Daly.

Canada has closed its borders with the United States for non-essential travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic and intends to keep it that way at least until January 21st. Although the new NHL season kicks off on January 13th, the ban won’t affect Canadian teams as they will play only against each other.

The NHL made several significant changes to their regular season format for 2020-21 to minimize the traveling and organized all teams in four divisions. Each team will only play their divisional opponents, with the format being carried over to the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.

27-year-old forward Josh Leivo has completed an $875,000 move to the Calgary Flames. The Canadian has signed a one-year contract with the franchise.

“Their mindset is all about winning right now,” Leivo stated upon completing the move. “They’re a team that looks good on paper, so we’ve got to go out there and show it on the ice. And I think I can be a big part of that. I’m a pretty easy, meat-and-potatoes-type guy. I like to get into the dirty areas, get to the front of the net, and I think I’ve got a pretty good shot that can beat any goalie in this league. … It’s an exciting time to be a Flame.”

The 2019-20 NHL season saw Leivo score 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) for the Vancouver Canucks. This was despite the fact that he was unable to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs due to fracturing his kneecap on December 21, 2019.

Leivo’s NHL career began back in 2011, when he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round of the NHL Draft. He has scored a total of 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) in 165 games for the Maple Leafs and the Canucks.

The Vegas Golden Knights thumped the Vancouver Canucks 5-0 in the first game of their Western Conference play-off on Sunday.

Alex Tuch, Reilly Smith, and Mark Stone each enjoyed a goal and an assist, while Shea Theodore bagged two assists of his own. Golden Knights Goaltender Robin Lehner enjoyed a standout performance, making 26 saves to mark his first NHL postseason shutout.

Following the game, Lehner had this to say, “It was really nice to get the win. I thought we played a [heck] of game … a really good team game. Everyone was working hard, blocking shots and backchecking. Doing all the small things, and it was nice to come out strong and start the series strong.”

Teammate Reilly Smith agreed with Lehner’s sentiment, explaining, “These series can be long, but the feeling in the first game is important and doing it the way we did tonight shows what we have in our locker room when we have every guy coming in, stepping up, and having an impact like they had. We’re a hard team to beat when we’re able to control the puck in the offensive zone, and we did that tonight.”

Game 2 will take place on Tuesday in Edmonton, the hub city of the NHL Western Conference.

Russian winger Nikolay Goldobin won’t be back in the NHL this season. Goldobin, who is still under contract with the Vancouver Canucks, reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with KHL side CSKA Moscow.

Goldobin made just one appearance with Canucks in 2019/20, instead, spending most of the season with the team’s AHL affiliate Utica Comets. He played 51 games with Comets and contributed with 50 points (19 goals and 31 assists).

The 24-year-old winger should have any problems joining his new team as he is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. Also, the Canucks didn’t show any particular interest in retaining his services.

Nikolay Goldobin started his NHL career with San Jose Sharks, who took him in the first round of 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Goldobin made his debut with Sharks in 2015/16 but made an impression and ended up making just 11 appearances in the next two seasons.

In 2017, Goldobin was traded to Canucks, where he gradually started receiving more playing time. His best season in Vancouver came during 2018/19 when he played 63 games and contributed with career-high 27 points.

Goldobin’s NHL totals include 125 career games in which he scored 19 goals and dished 27 assists for a total of 46 points.
