Williams needed the invite as she is currently ranked No. 112 on the WTA list. Only players ranked in the top 104 on the list get included in the main draw of the tournament.

The US Open confirmed the news on social media while also revealing several other wild card recipients. The most prominent name on the list is 2017’s semi-finalist CoCo Vandeweghe, who ranked as high as No.14 in 2018 but fell down to No. 195 lately due to a combination of foot and hand injuries.

Williams and Vandeweghe will be joined by NCAA champion Emma Navarro and teenagers Hailey Baptiste, Ashlyn Krueger, Caty McNally, and Katie Volynets.

Besides winning the US Open in 2000 and 2001, Venus Williams made two further finals appearances at the tournament early in her career. More recently, Williams reached the semi-finals in 2017 before being eliminated by the eventual champion Sloane Stephens. The 41-year-old player, who has seven Grand Slam titles to her name, didn’t progress past the third round since then.

Williams, currently ranked No. 67 player in the world, was the oldest player in the draw at this year’s US Open at the age of 40. This was her 22nd appearance on the tournament, which is most for a female tennis player in the Open Era.

The match against 24-year-old Muchova didn’t start good for Williams, as she was easily routed in the first set. Williams had a good effort in the second set, but couldn’t mount a comeback and ended up on a losing end of 6-3, 7-5 result.

Despite the early exit, Williams isn’t thinking about ending her career.

“I love this game,” said Williams after the game. “I’m good at what I do.”

“It’s easy to stay motivated and excited about doing something so amazing. Not many people get to do this,” she added.

The American Cori Gauff who is only 15 years old managed to shock everyone by beating Venus Williams in the first round. The five-time Wimbledon champion Williams was defeated with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Considering her age, Gauff was the youngest player that qualified for the main draw.

It is interesting to note that Venus had won 7 Grand Slams before the young match-winner was even born which gives us a good perspective of how great her victory is.
