]]>Maurice told the Jets’ brass about his decision on Friday morning. According to multiple reports, the decision was unexpected and caught everyone in the organization by surprise.
After the news was confirmed, Maurice issued a statement stating that he feels the Jets need a new voice and a fresh start.
“If you’ll allow me some arrogance, I feel I’m better positioned than anyone to know that they need a new voice,” Maurice said. “They haven’t quit on me. But they need somebody that can get them to that next place.”
Maurice leaves the Jets with a 13-10-5 record, enough for the fifth position in the Central Division. Assistant Dave Lowry will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season and is tasked with extending Winnipeg’s postseason streak.
Paul Maurice took over as the Jets’ head coach midway through the 2013-14 NHL season. Since then, he led the franchise to five playoff appearances, including four in a row since 2017-18. This is also the season in which the Jets had their biggest success, reaching the Conference finals. During his nine years in Winnipeg, Maurice compiled a 315-223-62 head coaching record.

]]>According to Daly, the NHL recently had discussions with the provincial health authorities and managed to get clearance for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets to compete in their home arenas.
“On the basis of our discussions in the past week, as well as our exchange of correspondence over the last 24 hours, we believe we are aligned and in agreement on the conditions on which each of our Canadian franchises can begin play in their own buildings for the start of the 2020-21 NHL season,” said Daly.
Canada has closed its borders with the United States for non-essential travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic and intends to keep it that way at least until January 21st. Although the new NHL season kicks off on January 13th, the ban won’t affect Canadian teams as they will play only against each other.
The NHL made several significant changes to their regular season format for 2020-21 to minimize the traveling and organized all teams in four divisions. Each team will only play their divisional opponents, with the format being carried over to the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.

]]>Being considered one of the best goalies in the NHL is certainly nothing new for Hellebuyck, this is his second nomination for the trophy over the last three years. In 2018, Hellebuyck finished second in the voting. He posted 64 wins that season and a brilliant .924 save percentage with six shutouts.
Hellebuyck was just as good this year, even though his shining performance didn’t translate into wins as much as they did in 2018. One of the main reasons for that was that the Jets had a start-studded defensive group playing in front of Hellebuyck in 2018 that included Dustin Byfuglien, Jacob Trouba, and Tyler Myers, who all left the team at the end of the year.
However, Hellebuyck was back in elite form this year, posting six shutouts once against and a .922 save percentage. He becomes the first goaltender of the Winnipeg Jets to ever win the award and the first goalie from a Canadian team since Carey Price won the award in 2015 with the Montreal Canadiens.
Hellebuyck is also the first American-born goalie to win the award since 2011.
