The New York Yankees didn’t waste time in finding their new hitting coach after firing Dillon Lawson last week. The team made a somewhat surprising choice, hiring television analyst and former Cincinnati Reds great Sean Casey for the role.

This will be the first coaching job for Casey. He worked with MLB Network in various capacities since retiring from MLB in 2008.

The Yankees entered the 2023 season with a talented hitting unit on paper, but their output has been disappointing so far in the campaign. The New York team has a .231 batting average, which stands as the third-worst in the league, with only Oakland Athletics and the Detroit Tigers being less efficient.

“I’m just really excited about having this opportunity in the second half to impact the guys in the lineup,” Casey said in a statement. “The Yankees have a lot of professional hitters, and I’m looking forward to connecting with them and getting on the same page.

Sean Casey played 12 years in MLB as a first baseman. He left the biggest mark with the Cincinnati Reds, where he was a three-time All-Star and ended up being selected to the franchise’s Hall of Fame. Casey and Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone played together with the Reds between 1998 and 2003.

The New York Yankees center fielder Harrison Bader is a doubt for the team’s opening game of the new season. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Friday that Bader has suffered a left oblique strain.

Bader began to feel discomfort on his left side while he was batting during the Yankees’ 4-0 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday as part of the team’s spring training.

“It’s an oblique [for Bader]. I don’t have a timeframe for you yet just because kind of the doctors are all weighing in on it today,” Boone announced when questioned by reporters ahead of the Yankees’ 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday. “Hopefully, I will have a better timeline for you tomorrow [Saturday]. But it’ll be some time.”

This is the fourth injury concern that has affected the Yankees in the last 24 hours, thereby causing the team much concern as they seek to progress with their spring training program. General manager Brian Cashman announced Thursday announced that Carlos Rodon would start the season on the injury list after the left-hander picked up a “mild forearm strain.” Relievers Tommy Kahnle and Lou Trivino are also on the injury list for the start of the season, picking up biceps tendinitis and an elbow ligament strain respectively.

Last season, Rodon was 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA, pitching a career-high 178 innings over 31 starts in the process. This led to Rodon earning his second consecutive All-Star selection.

Rodon’s arrival will be warmly welcomed by the Yankees, who already boasted the fourth overall-ranked rotation in terms of ERA last year. Upon his arrival in New York, Rodon will join the ranks of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, and Frankie Montas.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Rodon’s contract is the second-largest deal that the Yankees have awarded to a pitcher in franchise history. The highest-value contract remains Gerrit Cole’s $324 million deal in 2019.

To date, Rodon has obtained a career record of 56-46 with a 3.60 ERA.

In a dramatic twist of fate, Rodon won’t have to wait long to come face-to-face with his former team, with the Yankees scheduled to play the Giants on the Opening Day of the 2023 season.

Former All-Star and five-time Gold Glove Award winner Jason Heyward has signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees, the team announced on Thursday. The contract includes an invitation to spring training.

Heyward proved to be a dangerous power hitter and solid baserunner during the first six years of his major league career, batting .268/.353/.431 with 276 extra-base hits during his time at the Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals. After signing an eight-year, $184 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in 2015, Heyward’s career began to decline, as he went on to produce an OPS that was 14% below the league average from 2016 to 2022.

Despite his downward-spiraling performances, Heyward was considered to be a wise mentor and loyal teammate during his tenure with the Cubs. One of his standout moments on the team was his speech during the rain delay in the late stages of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, in which he was credited with galvanizing his teammates to victory.

Currently suffering from several gaps in their roster, the Yankees are looking to Heyward to add depth to their lineup particularly on the left side of their infield and in center field.

Aaron Judge has decided to remain at the Yankees, agreeing to a nine-year, $360 million contract with the team, sources confirmed on Wednesday. This comes after the 30-year-old player entered free agency at the conclusion of the season.

Judge enjoyed a historic season with the Yankees, hitting an American League record of 62 home runs, thereby breaking the record set by Roger Maris in 1961. In addition, Judge hit .311/.425/.686 with an American League-leading 131 RBIs, thereby earning his first MVP award.

“We’d love to have our player back,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said of Judge. “We would love to continue to call him our player every step of the way as he follows what looks like — as long as nothing happens — a career path that will lead him to Cooperstown. I would like him to be in pinstripes every step of the way.”

The star outfielder was drafted by the Yankees as the 32nd overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. He has since been named an All-Star on four occasions and has 220 homers and 497 RBIs to his name.

The New York Yankees’ World Series hopes are still alive. After being on the brink of elimination from the playoffs, the Yankees rallied to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday to force a winner-takes-it-all ALDS Game 5.

The Yankees’ were carried to the win by their starter Gerrit Cole, who went through seven innings and prevented the Guardians from scoring in bulk. Cole allowed six hits, including a home run, but overall finished with eight strikeouts and a 2.03 ERA.

“For most of the night, in order to pitch around somebody, and overall, just stuff was pretty good,” Cole said after the game. “But we just executed a lot of good pitches and mixed well. Well enough to get away with a couple of mistakes.”

Center fielder Harrison Bader, who arrived in New York in August, also came up big for the Yankees. Bader delivered a 429 homer at the top of the second to give his team a 3-0 lead and set the tone for the rest of the game. This was his third homer in the 2022 playoffs.

“I’m grateful and fortunate for the opportunity,” Bader said. “And every day I wake up, it feels good to be a Yankee. I carry that in the field, carry that in my preparation.”

The Yankees and the Guardians meet again on Monday for the deciding Game 5. The winner will face the Houston Astros in ALCS.

The New York Yankees took care of business in American League East with room to spare. Thanks to a 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night, the Yankees improved to a 95-59 record and clinched the AL East title with eight games left to be played in the regular season.

This year’s AL East title is the 20th in the Yankees’ franchise history and their first since 2019.

“Really proud of the guys. It’s the toughest division to win … every team’s a battle,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone after the game.

Boone reminded everyone that the goal for the Yankees is lifting the World Series trophy but said that team deserves to celebrate its achievement.

“We’re going to celebrate tonight and get on with the business of, obviously, we’ve got bigger goals,” he added. “We want to win a championship. That’s our stated goal. But tonight deserves to be celebrated in the gauntlet that is the AL East.”

The Yankees had a spectacular 2022 season start and were up 15.5 games on the second-placed team in AL East by July. This was followed by an uneven second part of the campaign, which saw their lead in the division dwindle to just 3.5 games at one point. However, the Yankees managed to shake off the rough stretch at the right time. They won eight games out of their previous nine contests and ran away with the division title.

After the Yankees clinch, the only division in MLB that still doesn’t have the winner is the NL East. This might remain the case until the very end of the regular season, as the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves currently share the same record at the top with 97 wins and 58 losses each.

The New York Yankees made re-signing All-MLB infielder DJ LeMahieu their biggest priority in the offseason, but it appears this will be a much harder task than the organization expected.

According to multiple reports, the Yankees and LeMahieu are far from being on the same page, and the negotiations are currently going nowhere. The team is reportedly offering a four-year, $75 million contract while the player wants a five-year deal worth $100 million.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, on the other hand, recently reported that the gap between the two sides is even bigger than $25 million. According to Rosenthal, the two sides are committed to continuing the talks, but LeMahieu is now open to negotiating with other teams as well.

LeMahieu previously rejected the Yankees’ $18.5 million qualifying offer, which means that the team will be entitled to a draft compensation if he leaves New York.

There will definitely be a big market for DJ LeMahieu if he decides to explore other offers. He is coming off a productive 2020 that saw him batting a career-high .364 while hitting 10 home runs with 27 RBIs.

LeMahieu, who spent most of his MLB career with the Colorado Rockies before signing with Yankees in 2019, has a career .305 batting average with 85 home runs, 478 RBIs, and 83 stolen bases. He has three All-Star nods under his belt and has won the Silver Slugger Award twice.

Despite entering the 2020 MLB season strong,  New York Yankees have emerged as one of the worst teams in baseball in recent weeks. They lost eight out of their 10 last games, and by falling to a 21-21 record, find themselves in danger of missing out on playoffs.

This hard fall of the Yankees, which included a 12-7 loss to Blue Jays on Monday even though they led 6-2 at one point, even caused the team’s manager Brian Cashman to speak out. Cashman organized a meeting with the team on Tuesday, in which he addressed his concerns about the team’s current form.

“It’s not something that we’re accustomed to, having a slide like this,” – Cashman told reporters after the meeting. “We’re used to better baseball than this, our fans deserve better baseball than this.”

According to Cashman, he didn’t have any harsh words for the players, and just wanted to encourage them to bounce back.

“[I wanted] to just remind them, first and foremost, that I believe in them,” – he added. “They all were acquired for various reasons, to come together as a group as a team for high expectations.”

New York Yankees opened the season by going 16-6 and then lost 15 out of their next 20 games. However, several factors influenced this change of form, including numerous injuries to the team’s key players. This included having four of their All-Stars – Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, and Gleyber Torres – on the injured list at one point. Since then, LeMahieu and Torres returned to the active roster, but Judge and Stanton might be out until playoffs. That is if the Yankees manage to get there.

Giancarlo Stanton’s body just cannot seem to give him a break in the 2019 season. The Yankees’ slugger was forced to the injured list once again on Wednesday, just eight days after joining the team after another extended injury absence.

Stanton missed much of the first three months of the year after suffering a biceps injury and then subsequent calf and shoulder injuries during the rehab process.

Now, a right knee sprain will force the Yankees’ most highly-paid player back to the Injured List and will leave Yankee fans and manager Aaron Boone wondering when the team’s bad luck will end.

The injury occurred as Stanton slid head-first into third base during New York’s Tuesday evening game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Stanton, the author of a career .268 batting average and 306 home runs, has only managed to play in 9 games and hit 1 homer for the Bronx Bombers this year. The franchise certainly didn’t expect this to be the outcome for Stanton this season, especially after he played 158 games in his first season with the team in 2018.

The length of the 29-year-old outfielder’s stay on the Injured List is up in the air. Knee sprains are notably tricky to pinpoint and predict, so the slugger will just have to wait to see how long it will be until he’s ready to get going again.
