]]>The Cardinals were likely comfortable granting Ertz his release because of the 33-year-old player’s diminished performances and the emergence of second-year tight end Trey McBride. The Colorado State product has 48 catches for 521 yards and one TD.
After playing in the first seven games of the season, Ertz landed on the Injured Reserve with a quadriceps injury. Reportedly, the veteran is expected to be ready for action soon and hopes to join a contender after he clears waivers.
Zach Ertz spent the first eight and a half seasons of his pro career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He earned three Pro Bowl nods and won a Super Bowl with the franchise before being traded to the Cardinals midway through the 2021 campaign.
Although Ertz’s stint with Arizona started well – 574 yards and three TDs to finish 202—he failed to make as big an impact as the Cardinals hoped. Part of the reason was an ACL injury that limited him to 10 games last season and impacted his performances in 2023.

]]>The Eagles detailed the trade on Friday via their social media.
Philadelphia had two star tight ends in Ertz and Dallas Goedert to enter the 2021 NFL season, and it became clear that one of them might be out before the trade deadline. Several teams inquired to see which one was the odd man out, and it turned out to be Ertz.
The Cardinals became active on the market earlier this week after losing TE Maxx Williams to a season-ending injury. Ertz is obviously a major upgrade and probably the best option they could find at the moment.
The only issue for Arizona is that Ertz is currently in the final year of his contract and is looking to land a major extension that would place him among the highest-paid players at the position. The two sides haven’t discussed a deal before the trade took place, but that is expected to be one of the major talking points once the 30-year-old officially joins the franchise.
Zach Ertz made three Pro Bowls with the Philadelphia Eagles and has been considered one of the best tight ends for years. He has 579 career receptions for 6,267 yards and 60 touchdowns. In 2018, Ertz set the NFL’s record for most catches by a TE in a single season with 116.
“He will always be a member of the Eagles family, not only because of what he accomplished on the field, but also because of the wonderful person, dedicated leader, and exemplary role model that he was for nine seasons in Philadelphia,” said Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie of Ertz’s departure.

]]>Ertz got hurt in Week 6 loss to Baltimore Ravens when he was seen limping several times. The 29-year-old player tried to play through the pain but ended up exiting the game for good in the fourth quarter.
Eagles haven’t given a timetable for Ertz’s return, but he is expected to miss four to six weeks, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Losing Ertz is a big blow for the Eagles, although the organization could get few slight breaks in the coming weeks that could help them deal with the situation. Veteran wideout DeSean Jackson is expected to return to the lineup after three weeks of absence, giving the team a reliable option up front, while Philly also has a favorable schedule.
Eagles host struggling New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys in the next two weeks, after which they will have a bye before another meeting with Giants.
Another way to look at Zach Ertz’s situation is that his absence shouldn’t make a big difference for the Eagles. Ertz has been struggling in 2020 and only has 19 receptions for 139 yards and one touchdown to show for this season. For comparison, he had 88 catches for 916 receiving yards and six TD last year.

]]>Ertz is entering the final year of his contract with the Eagles in 2020 and the two sides have been discussing an extension for some time now. However, several past reports indicated that the talks haven’t been progressing well and have completely stalled recently.
Speaking with reporters on Friday, Ertz said that he wants to stay with the Eagles past 2020, but isn’t sure if the franchise feels the same way about him.
“It’s been frustrating at times. It’s been difficult,” Ertz said. “I’ve said all along I want to be here for the long run. I don’t know for sure if that feeling is mutual.”
Despite feeling unappreciated by the Eagles, Ertz said that unsuccessful contract talks wouldn’t affect his commitment this season.
“So I’m going into this year that I’m going to leave it all out there,” he added. “Whatever happens, happens.”
Zach Ertz has been one of the best tight ends in the league for years now, and the preferred target for quarterback Carson Wentz. Since Wentz took over under center in 2017, Eartz racked up 278 receptions for 2,903 yards and 22 touchdowns. This included 116 receptions in 2018, which is an NFL single-season record for a tight end.

]]>Ertz suffered the injury in Sunday’s game against Dallas Cowboys, in which the Eagles managed to take command of NFC East with 17-9 win. The 29-year-old tried to catch a pass in the first quarter and took a hit to the ribs from Cowboys’ safety Xavier Woods in the process. He briefly left the game for treatment but later returned to the field, contributing with four receptions for 28 yards.
According to NFL Network’s report, Ertz’s injury might be more severe as he is “hurt pretty bad.” Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, on the other hand is optimistic that his star tight end won’t miss time.
“There is a rib that’s been affected. I still am waiting on, with our doctors, a couple more tests for some other things,” said Pederson on Monday. “It is [a good sign that returned to play Sunday]. It just shows his toughness and willingness to go back out there, but as you guys know, we take every injury seriously and make sure that we protect our players.”
Zach Ertz is a major part of the Eagles offense this year as well, having caught 88 passes for 916 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games played. This brought him his third consecutive Pro Bowl appearance.
