Cleveland Browns announced a new signing on Friday, bringing in back kicker Phil Dawson. Despite signing a deal with the Browns, Dawson won’t dress up for the job as he announced his retirement moments after.

Dawson, who spent the majority of his career in Cleveland, wanted to retire as a member of the organization and the Browns didn’t hesitate to give him that opportunity.

“We are thrilled that Phil Dawson wanted to come back and retire as a Cleveland Brown,” – said owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said. “He epitomizes the characteristics that we look for in our players — hardworking, professional, consistent and he was a pillar in the community. He is a great example for all current and future Browns.”

Dawson signed with Cleveland Browns in 1999 and went on to play 14 years for the team. During that time he saw some of his biggest career moments and achievements including a Pro Bowl selection and two Second-team All-Pro honors. He also owns several Browns’ franchise records including the record for total field goals made with 305.

“To have the opportunity to come back home and retire with the organization and the city that I love is incredibly meaningful to me,” –said Dawson in a statement. “It only seems right to have the opportunity to do this with the fans that have been so good to me and my family.”

Besides the Browns, Dawson also played for San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.
