In a surprising turn of events, veteran tight end Luke Willson is ending his NFL career. Willson revealed his decision on Wednesday, just one day after he inked a new deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

In a statement shared on social media, Willson explained that his retirement from football was a result of health issues he experienced in the offseason.

“After reflecting on everything yesterday and being in the building, I have decided that it’s time for me to begin with the next chapter of my life,” Willson wrote in the statement.

Willson proceeded to thank the Seahawks organization and the city of Seattle while adding that he has “no idea what’s next at the moment.”

“But whatever it is, you can be sure that I will bring a lot of energy to it,” he concluded.

Luke Willson played seven years in Seattle during three different stints with the Seahawks. He made 85 regular-season appearances for the organization, totaling 97 catches for 1,208 yards and 11 touchdowns. Willson was also part of the franchise’s team that won the Super Bowl XLVIII in 2013.

The Seahawks shouldn’t be hurt that much with Willson’s retirement, considering Seattle is already stacked on the position. They currently have 2017’s second-round pick Gerald Everett, three-year veteran Will Dissly, and last year’s fourth-round selection Colby Parkinson as their top tight end options.
