Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone made history on Saturday, marking his record 613th game with the club with a resounding 6-1 victory over Sevilla.

In what was his first start for the team, new arrival Memphis Depay scored two quick-fire goals in the 23rd and 26th minutes to put his side in the driving seat. Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco scored after the half-time break before the substitute Alvaro Morata added two goals to wrap up the victory.

“It’s hard to explain the emotions, you can’t put into words what you feel inside,” Simeone stated after the game. “It’s hard to explain the emotions, you can’t put into words what you feel inside.”

Following the victory, Simeone also extends his record for most wins by an Atletico Madrid manager. His tally now stands at 359, thereby leading second-placed Luis Aragones who amassed 308 wins.

With this victory, Atletico takes their points total up to 45, putting them firmly in third place and keeping them in contention for a Champions League qualification spot.

Atletico Madrid has signed forward Memphis Depay from La Liga rivals FC Barcelona, the club announced on Friday. The fee could rise above a reported €4 million, sources have confirmed.

With his contract at Barca set to expire in June, Depay had struggled to get game time at Barcelona, only starting two league games this season. Atleti, on the other hand, has been on the lookout for a player like Depay following the departure of Joao Felix to Chelsea on loan and the sale of Matheus Cunha to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“Memphis Depay is a new Atletico de Madrid player following the agreement reached with FC Barcelona for the transfer of the Dutch striker to our club, signing for the remainder of the season and two more seasons,” Atletico confirmed in a public statement.

Relying on just Alvaro Morata, Antoine Griezmann and Angel Correa in attack, Atletico has struggled to find its form this season, getting eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage while struggling to seal a top four spot in La Liga. The team’s season has received a boost, however, after winning 2-0 against Levant in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey.

FC Barcelona was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League for the second successive season on Wednesday night following a crushing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. The Catalan club will now finish the group stage in third place in Group C, enabling them to qualify for the Europa League knockout round playoffs.

“We were not at Bayern’s level today,” Barca manager Xavi admitted following his team’s loss on home soil. “I have said that we have to be united, tackle the situation head on. We have been knocked out of the Champions League but the season does not end in October. There are other competitions,” Xavi continued as focus now turns to La Liga and the Europa League.

Potentially joining Barca in the Europa League are La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid, who were kept in third place in Group B following a frustrating 2-2 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen. Still, with Leverkusen trailing by just one point, Atletico will have to remain focused in their final group game in order to avoid losing their Europa League slot to the German side.

With Sevilla also eliminated from the competition, Real Madrid is now the only Spanish team to qualify for the knockout stages; the first time that this has happened this century.

Atletico Madrid reportedly made an agreement with Barcelona that will see them sign French striker Antoine Griezmann on permanent transfer next summer. Griezmann is currently in the second year of his two-season loan at Metropolitano Stadium.

The agreement represents a conclusion to a lengthy standoff between the two La Liga giants over the terms of Griezmann’s loan with Atletico. The loan agreement had a clause that would make the deal permanent for a transfer fee of €40 million if the player was to play 45 minutes or more in 50 percent of the matches in which he’s available. However, the two clubs had opposing opinions on when the clause would kick in, with Atletico trying to use this as leverage to negotiate a lower fee.

According to multiple reports, the two clubs have avoided a potentially messy legal situation by agreeing to a fee of €25 million to make Griezmann’s transfer to Atletico permanent. The 31-year-old will sign a deal until the summer of 2026.

Antoine Griezmann hasn’t played much for Atletico Madrid this season due to the clause in his contract. In order to comply with their view of the clause, Atletico mostly kept Griezmann on the bench or brought him in as a second-half sub. The veteran played a total of 10 games in 2022-23 in all competitions, scoring three goals and adding one assist.

It is expected that Griezmann will return to the starting 11 after the deal with the Catalan club has been completed. Atletico could use his goals since they are only fifth in La Liga and already six points behind leaders Barca and Real Madrid.

French forward Antoine Griezmann is ending his disappointing stint with Barcelona and is set to return to Atletico Madrid, according to multiple reports. Griezmann will initially join Atletico on loan while the club has an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Barcelona was keen to part ways with Griezmann, one of the club’s highest earners, as part of efforts to slash their huge wage bill. They initially approached Atletico with a swap proposal, wanting to get talented midfielder Joao Felix in return.

Atletico weren’t interested in parting with Felix but were prepared to take Griezmann off Barca’s hand. They ended up agreeing to pay $12 million for a season-long loan and $47 million if they decide to trigger their purchase option.

Barcelona reportedly already has a low-cost replacement for Griezmann lined up. They are expected to sign Sevilla’s Luuk de Jong on loan. Atletico, on the other hand, cleared their books by shipping midfielder Saul Niguez to Chelsea on loan with the option to buy type of deal.

Antoine Griezmann joined Barcelona in 2019 after the club paid his $140 million buyout clause. During his time at Camp Nou, Griezmann failed to justify his big transfer fee and struggled to make an impact. He only managed to score 35 goals in 102 appearances with the Catalan club and only has the Copa Del Rey trophy to show for.

Griezmann was previously considered one of the premier forwards in soccer during his first stint with Atletico Madrid. He scored 133 goals in his five seasons with the club while helping Atletico win three trophies, including UEFA Europa League in 2018.

Atletico Madrid lost striker Diego Costa earlier this month after the Spanish-Brazilian legend announced his departure from the club, but it turns out that the Colchoneros have already found his replacement on the roster.

Atletico secured a loan deal for Olympique Lyon forward Moussa Dembele until this summer, adding a player that will serve as an alternative to Luis Suarez in their attack.

Dembele has not had the best of seasons for Lyon in 2020-21, scoring only 1 league goal in 16 appearances for the French side. He has had better luck in the Champions League and in cup competitions, chipping in 10 goals in those competitions in only 20 games.

The French forward will probably play a similar role for the La Liga leaders for the rest of the season, featuring in the team’s Champions League campaign and being a second-choice striker in their domestic competition.

The 24-year-old striker could potentially stick around in the Spanish capital after the remainder of this season, as the Colchoneros have a $41 million purchase option for his services if they want to make his deal permanent.

Dembele could debut for his new team as soon as their next league match at Eibar next Thursday.

Atletico Madrid was shockingly eliminated from the Copa del Rey after suffering a 1-0 loss to third division team Cornella on Wednesday.

Atletico, current leaders of Spanish La Liga, decided to sit several of their first-team players for the matchup but were still considered an overwhelming favorite to get a big win. However, it looks like their opponent didn’t get that memo.

Cornella were the better team early on and managed to get the lead in the seventh minute. Agus Medina delivered a cross from a free-kick to the penalty box, and Adrian Jimenez was the fastest to meet the ball, delivering a well-placed volley to give his team the lead.

Atletico spent the rest of the game trying to find a way back into the game, but their attacks fell short. This caused frustration among players, resulting in Ricard Sanchez’s red card in the second half.

Cornella, on the other hand, defended well and even had several chances to increase their lead. They ended up having the same number of shots (15) as their opponents but placed six on target compared to zero by Atletico.

This is the second consecutive time that Atletico Madrid got eliminated from the Copa del Rey by a third division squad. In 2019-20, they were sent home by Cultural Leonesa after a 2-1 away loss.

“We always want to win, but today our opponents deserved to go through, just like last year,” said Atletico head coach Diego Simeone. “They competed well, they played the game they wanted to, they won the second balls, they kept up their intensity, and we have to congratulate them as they overpowered us.”

La Liga giant Atletico Madrid revealed on Tuesday that striker Diego Costa has terminated his contract with the club by mutual consent. While the contract was still valid for a further six months, Costa made the decision to part ways with Atletico with immediate effect.

This move has enabled Costa to join a new club as a free agent in the January transfer window. This move also significantly reduces Atletico’s wage bill, consequently providing them with extra funds to recruit fresh talent in the new year. The club released the following statement upon Costa’s decision to terminate his contract:

“The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract. The club thanks Diego Costa for his dedication during these years and wishes him well in the next stage of his professional career.”

Atletico manager Diego Simone was highly complimentary of Costa, recalling how the Spanish international showed complete commitment to the club during his tenure. He justified the 32-year-old veteran’s exit by explaining that Costa was in need of new challenges due to his strong form and hunger for success.

Real Madrid continued its excellent week on Saturday with a 2-0 home victory against bitter rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga action.

Real Madrid, which won a crucial Sunday match at Sevilla and beat Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday to advance to the knockout round of the UEFA Champions League, welcomed the Colchoneros to the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium on Saturday night in a clash that they needed to win to stay around in the La Liga title race.

Atletico, which came into the match as La Liga leaders, wasted an opportunity to create distance between themselves and their cross-town rival in their first loss of the season.

Los Blancos took an early lead after a pair of previous scoring opportunities were denied Jan Oblak. Toni Kross delivered a perfect corner which found Casemiro’s head and was headed into the net in the 15th minute.

The teams reached the half with Real Madrid leading 1-0 and Atletico trying but unable to find scoring opportunities.

The game was put away in the 63rd minute when a Dani Carvajal shot hit the post, but bounced off of the leg of Atletico keeper Jan Oblak. This put Real Madrid up 2-0 and gave them a lead that they would not relinquish.

Atletico’s lead over Real Madrid at the top of the table has now slipped to just 3 points. They will host Elche next weekend, while Real Madrid will travel to Athletic Club.

Despite an excellent domestic campaign in 2020-21 that has Atletico Madrid sitting at the top of La Liga, Diego Simeone’s team had struggled at times in the UEFA Champions League group stage and went into the final match of their group with their knockout stage hopes still not certified.

However, an important 2-0 road victory at RB Salzburg gave the Colchoneros the three points they needed in order to advance to the next stage of the competition.

Atletico, who finished second place in Group A behind defending champions Bayern Munich, had to at least draw in their match against a feisty Austrian opponent if they wanted to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

Simeone’s bunch did more than that, knocking in a pair of goals to defeat their opposition, which left the match feeling shorted after shooting more times and holding more possession of the ball than Atletico did.

Atletico keeper Jan Oblak was key in their victory, making two saves which easily could have ended up as goals for RB Salzburg.

The La Liga leaders took the lead in the 39th minute of the match when a Yannick Carrasco free kick headed straight into the Salzburg net by defender Mario Hermoso, putting the team at ease.

Atletico held onto their lead throughout the second half, try as Salzburg did to get back into the game. The final result was sealed when Angel Correa found an unmarked Carrasco on a counter-attack, whose shot easily beat Cican Stanković.

Atleti will move on to the knockout stage of the competition, while RB Salzburg will qualify for the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League after finishing 3rd in Group A.
