La Liga giant Atletico Madrid revealed on Tuesday that striker Diego Costa has terminated his contract with the club by mutual consent. While the contract was still valid for a further six months, Costa made the decision to part ways with Atletico with immediate effect.

This move has enabled Costa to join a new club as a free agent in the January transfer window. This move also significantly reduces Atletico’s wage bill, consequently providing them with extra funds to recruit fresh talent in the new year. The club released the following statement upon Costa’s decision to terminate his contract:

“The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract. The club thanks Diego Costa for his dedication during these years and wishes him well in the next stage of his professional career.”

Atletico manager Diego Simone was highly complimentary of Costa, recalling how the Spanish international showed complete commitment to the club during his tenure. He justified the 32-year-old veteran’s exit by explaining that Costa was in need of new challenges due to his strong form and hunger for success.
