Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich made a surprising decision to fire their head coach Julian Nagelsmann on Friday. The German club moved quickly to hire his replacement, bringing in former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

According to Bayern’s official announcement, Tuchel agreed to a deal that runs until the summer of 2025.

Nagelsmann led Bayern to a clean sweep in UEFA Champions League this season, winning all eight games in the competition. However, the club’s form in the domestic league was less satisfactory, with a recent 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen causing them to relinquish the top of the Bundesliga table to their biggest rival Borussia Dortmund.

Reportedly, Bayern’s brass felt an urgency to make a change while they still have a chance to turn things around. The Bavarian powerhouse won 10 consecutive domestic titles leading to this season.

“Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching team and wish everyone the best of luck for the future,” said CEO Oliver Kahn.

“I am very grateful to Julian for what he has done for FC Bayern and I wish him all the best,” sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic added.

According to sources close to the club, Kahn and Salihamidzic initially intended to let Nagelsmann see out the season and bring Tuchel in the summer. However, they were told that the 49-year-old manager wouldn’t wait for Bayern and would take an offer from another club if the opportunity presented itself.

Tuchel last coached in Germany with Borussia, spending two seasons with the club and winning the DFB-Pokal before departing at the end of the 2016-17 season. He then coached Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea,  winning two Ligue 1 titles with PSG and UEFA Champions League trophy with the London club.

Nagelsmann joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2021 after successful spells with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig. He helped the club continue its title streak in 2021-22 but saw early exits in UCL and the domestic cup.

Bayern Munich isn’t willing to let midfielder Thiago Alcantara and left-back David Alaba leave the club so easily. According to the club’s manager Hansi Flick, the Bundesliga champions “will do everything” to keep the duo at Allianz Arena in years to come.

It was recently reported that Thiago still hasn’t responded to Bayern’s contract extension offer and is plotting an exit, with Premier League giant emerging as his most likely destination. Alaba is also stalling with signing a new deal, being linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

However, Flick told German outlet Bild that he hopes he’ll have Thiago and Alaba as part of his squad in the future as well.

“I will do everything I can to ensure that we can keep two such quality players,” said Flick. “I’m trying to keep the squad together as it is at the moment.”

The issue with Alaba, who has been with Bayern his entire career, is that the club isn’t willing to pay him wages that he demands. Reportedly, the 28-year-old Austrian wants to become one of the highest-paid players in the club and is eyeing a salary north of $15 million.

Thiago, on the other hand, wants a new challenge in his career with even Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitting that the Spaniard is on the exit door.

“We have negotiated with him seriously and granted all his wishes, but it looks like he wants to do something new at the end of his career,” said Rummenigge.

Thiago and David Alaba’s future will most likely be resolved this summer. Considering that their contracts expire next year, Bayern probably won’t risk if they don’t pen extensions soon. Instead, the Bavarian giant will look to sell them and recoup at least a portion of their value instead of losing them for free in 2021.

Following some poor performances in recent months, Bayern Munich’s front office is preparing a big spending spree in the summer to bring back the club to the European elite. And while Bayern is gearing up to pursue some of soccer’s biggest stars, Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be among them, despite rumors.

During a recent appearance on fan club meeting, Bayern’s president Herbert Hainer was asked about the possibility of landing Ronaldo and openly rejected this scenario.

“Many names are linked with us by the media,” aid Hainer via Passauer Neue Presse. “Cristiano should be a bit too old for us.”

Haine, however, confirmed that the club is still intending to pursue German star winger Leroy Sane of Manchester City. Bayern engaged in serious talks with City over the player towards in the summer, but Sane suffered a right knee injury which ended up stalling the transfer.

While Hainer obviously wants a youth revolution in Munich, not wanting Cristiano Ronaldo seems foolish. While it’s true Ronaldo isn’t getting any younger, his game is still on the top level. The 35-year-old Portuguese scored 20 goals in 20 Seria A games this season while adding three goals in other competitions.
