Eight-time All-Star Vince Carter and 2004 NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups have been elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2024 class. The news was reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Official confirmation of Carter and Billups’ induction to the Hall of Fame will come on Saturday during the Final Four of Men’s NCAA tournament.

Vince Carter will enter the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He started his career with the Toronto Raptors, who selected him as the fifth overall pick in 1998, before suiting up for seven more franchises including the New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks, and the Atlanta Hawks. On top of his eight All-Star appearances, Carter also won the NBA Rookie of the Year award and was the NBA Slam Dunk Competition winner in 2000.

Chauncey Billups has been eligible for the Hall of Fame nod since 2018 but 2024 was the first time he was a finalist. Billups is best known for his stint with the Detroit Pistons, leading the franchise to an unexpected NBA Championship in 2004. He was a five-time All-Star and received two NBA All-Defensive Second Team during his career.

Since retiring after the 2019-20 NBA season, Carter ventured into broadcasting. He served as an NBA analyst for ESPN until 2023 and currently works in the same role with YES Network.

Billups, who retired in 2014, has been the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers since 2021.

LA Clippers’ are putting the final touches on what is turning out to be a juggernaut coaching staff.

According to NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Clippers are finalizing the deals with Chauncey Billups and Larry Drew that would see them come on board as assistants under head coach Ty Lue. The duo would join former Brooklyn Nets’ head coach Kenny Atkinson and highly-respected Miami Heat’s assistant Dan Craig, who joined Lue’s staff last month.

Billups has an impressive reputation in the NBA, having previously led the Detroit Pistons to an NBA championship as a player back in 2004. The five-time All-Star is viewed as the respected figure among today’s players, and the Clippers’ hope that his winning mentality and hard work attitude can rub off their underperforming stars.

Since retiring, Billups transitioned into a broadcasting career but has been reportedly looking for a chance to get back to NBA as an executive or a coach. He was previously a candidate for the general manager job with Cleveland Cavaliers as well as one of the favorites for Indiana Pacers’ head coaching vacancy.

Drew, on the other hand, comes with an impressive resume that includes head coaching stints with Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He was also a longtime assistant with LA Lakers.

Indiana Pacers could take a page out of Brooklyn Nets’ book and hire a Hall of Fame guard without coaching experience as their new head coach. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the 2004 NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups emerged as the leading candidate for to replace recently fired Nate McMillan.

Billups, who retired in 2014, doesn’t have coaching experience but has remained involved in basketball working as an analyst. He also had opportunities to work in the front office in the past couple of years, being offered a general manager position with Cleveland Cavaliers, but would reportedly rather be an NBA coach.

Wojnarowski reports that the Pacers want Billups because he fits the mold of their previous coaches like Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas, both NBA champions and known for their leadership qualities.

The contacts between Indiana Pacers and Chauncey Billups are believed to be in the early stages, and the organization is expected to take time evaluating other candidates. Also, the outcome of the talks will most likely depend on in-depth interviews between two sides, which will show whether Billups and Indiana share the same ambitions and philosophy.

In case Billups doesn’t land a job with Pacers, he still might get to have a coaching job next season. Reportedly, Billups has a verbal agreement to join Ty Lue as an assistant if the former Cavaliers’ head coach lands a new coaching gig this summer.

Billups played for seven different teams during his NBA career but saw his biggest successes with Pistons with whom he won the NBA title in 2004. He is also a five-time All-Star and has three All-NBA selections.

Despite the fact that he has 10 All-Star appearances and is considered first-ballot Hall of Famer, Carmelo Anthony isn’t on the NBA roster at the moment. Anthony played his last game in the league back in November and it still remains unclear if NBA teams are prepared to give him a chance for a fresh start.

The 2004 NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups, who played with Anthony from 2008 to 2011, seems to have a theory about why Melo isn’t in the NBA right now.

According to Billups, scoring lots of points always “meant too much” for Anthony, and that is why he was never prepared to take a backup role which would extend his NBA career.

“Scoring 30 meant too much, but I think now you fast forward the tape and the reason why he’s not in the league — because he’s still worthy — is he hasn’t mentally taken that step back to say, ‘OK, I’ll come in and play against back-ups. I’ll try to help the team out. I know I might not be able to close, but I just want to help.’ Well, he’s not there yet.” – said Billups during his recent appearance on SiriusXM’s NBA radio.

Given the fact that he is still only 35 years old, there are lots of teams that would take on Carmelo Anthony if he was willing to be a role player. One such team is Los Angeles Lakers, where he would end up playing with his old friend and USA Basketball teammate LeBron James. According to reports, Lakers are interested in taking Melo but are waiting to fill the rest of their roster to make the official approach.

Anthony played only 10 games last season, averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game with the Houston Rockets.
