Cristiano Ronaldo continues to be clutch for Manchester United when it matters most. The Portuguese star scored a late goal in the UEFA Champions League clash against Villareal on Wednesday to give his club the first win in the new UCL season.

After an embarrassing loss to the Young Boys in their first match of Group F, United was expected to bounce back against Villareal. But the La Liga side proved to be an equally worthy opponent and managed to get the lead early in the second half following a scoreless first period via a goal from Paco Alcacer.

Man Utd equalized in the 60th minute thanks to the left-back Alex Telles, after which they focused on the attack even more in an effort to take all three points. Villareal managed to hold on until stoppage time, and it seemed the game would end in a draw.

Unfortunately for the Spanish club, Ronaldo managed to find the net in the last minute of stoppage time after an assist from Jesse Lingard and seal the 2-1 win for United.

Elsewhere in the UEFA Champions League, La Liga giants Barcelona offered another disappointing performance and were thrashed 0-3 by Benfica. Barca is currently riding a two-game losing streak in UCL and is yet to score a goal in the competition.

Juventus managed to beat the reigning UCL champs Chelsea, claiming a 1-0 home win. Bayern was dominant against Dynamo Kyiv and scored five goals, while Red Bull Salzburg stunned the 2020/21 Ligue 1 winners Lille.

Portuguese star forward Cristiano Ronaldo is now the sole owner of the record for most goals scored in international matches. Ronaldo made history on Tuesday with a brace in Portugal’s 2-1 World Cup Qualifiers win against Ireland.

Entering the match, Ronaldo had 109 international goals next to his name, tying him with Iran’s Ali Daei. The new Manchester United player didn’t have to wait too long for an opportunity to break the record as Portugal was awarded a penalty in the 15th minute.  Ronaldo stepped up to take the kick but had his shot saved by Ireland’s goalie Gavin Bazunu.

Portugal then fell behind late in the first half and struggled to create chances for the better part of the second period before Ronaldo took over the game. The 36-year-old first scored in the 89th minute to give Portugal the equalizer and break the tie with Daei. He then added another goal in extra time to seal the win for his country and increase his international goals tally to 111.

“This record is mine, and it is unique,” Ronaldo told reporters after the match. “I’m extremely happy, and it’s another one for my career.”

Cristiano Ronaldo previously broke the record for most European Championships goals at EURO 2020 in June, when he netted five times and took home the tournament’s Golden Boot. He also became the only player to both appear and score on five different Euros.

Ronaldo made a total of 180 appearances on the international stage with Portugal and helped his country win the UEFA European Championship in 2016.

It appears that Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be returning to Real Madrid after all. The Portuguese superstar has been heavily linked with the La Liga giants in recent weeks, but according to Real head coach Carlo Ancelotti, the club isn’t working on making this move happen.

“Cristiano is a Real Madrid legend and has all my affection and respect,” Ancelotti wrote on Twitter. “I’ve never considered signing him. We look forward.”

Cristiano Ronaldo spent nine seasons with Real Madrid, during which he helped the club win two La Liga trophies and four Champions League honors. He also became the club’s top goalscorer in the process.

Ronaldo left Spain in 2018 and joined Seria A powerhouse Juventus. He won two league titles in Italy and continued to have individual success, but the club’s poor performances in the 2020-21 season and lack of success in European competition sparked rumors about the 36-year-old player’s exit.

Earlier in the summer, it was reported that Ronaldo wanted to leave Juve and had Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid as his preferred destinations. But options now seem to be off the table. PSG signed rival Lionel Messi in a blockbuster move earlier this month, while Ancelotti now ruled out his Santiago Bernabeu comeback.

The most realistic scenario for Ronaldo seems to be staying with Juventus for one more season and then deciding on the future once he becomes a free agent next summer.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo continues to make his case for being the best soccer player in the history of the game. The latest addition to his impressive resume was a two-goal outing against Hungary at EURO 2020, which saw Ronaldo break several European Championship records.

The first record came immediately after Ronaldo took the field, as this was his fifth time to play at the EUROs. The previous record was four tournaments, shared between 17 players.

Ronaldo then scored from a penalty kick in the 87th minute to give Portugal a 2-0 lead, which increased his goal tally at the EUROs to 10. This meant he surpassed France legend Michel Platini and became the player with the most goals in European Championship history.

Ronaldo added another goal several minutes later, further solidifying his place at the top.

The performance against Hungary saw Ronaldo make several other entries in the history books. He extended some of the records he already owned including most games played in any European Championships (22). The Juventus star also inched closer to becoming the best international goalscorer in the history of soccer.

Ronaldo now has 106 goals in 176 games for Portugal and finds himself just three goals behind record-holder Ali Daei of Iran.

“Players who have longevity in football are those who can adapt,” said Ronaldo about his ability to remain efficient in front of the goal for so long. “The numbers speak for themselves: I have adapted from 18 to 36. I always work to achieve things on a personal and collective level.”

Ronaldo will have a chance to continue his tear at EUROs on Saturday, when Portugal faces Germany in their second game of the EURO 2020 Group Stage.
