The Denver Broncos announced on Wednesday that they are benching veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and installing backup Jarrett Stidham as the new starter. According to a report by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Wilson anticipated such a move and is expecting to be cut by the franchise in March.

In a piece published shortly after the Broncos’ made the announcement of Wilson’s benching, Russini detailed two-month negotiations between the two sides regarding the player’s contract. Reportedly, the Broncos wanted Wilson to defer the $37 million “injury guarantee” on his contract that would kick in if he isn’t able to pass his medical in March.

At the time, the Broncos told Wilson that he would lose his starting job and be made inactive if he didn’t agree to the contract change. The 35-year-old player declined, leading to his recent benching and making him certain that he played his last game with the franchise.

Wilson signed a five-year, $245 million contract extension with the Broncos ahead of the 2022 season. He has $39 million guaranteed for the upcoming season, and it would cost Denver approximately $85 million in dead cap money to release him before March. They can also spread the hit between 2024 and 2025 if they cut him with a post-June 1 designation.

The Broncos are currently 7-8 after starting the season 1-5 and remain in the playoff race. Wilson will finish the 2023 campaign, having completed 66.4 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight picks.

The Denver Broncos have made a decision to move on from veteran pass rusher Randy Gregory. The franchise is still hoping they can find a trade partner for the 30-year-old player, but is ready to release him if there is no deal to be made.

Multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday morning that Gregory will be released by the Broncos. However, head coach Sean Payton told the reporters later in the day that the release hasn’t been finalized yet because “there might be some teams interested in a trade.”

Whether Gregory ends up released or traded, one thing is sure: his time with the Broncos has come to an end. He will leave the franchise less than two years into a five-year, $70 million contract he signed during the 2022 offseason.

Gregory was limited to six games last season due to a knee injury and finished the campaign with 12 tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. He started the first three games of the 2023 season before being benched ahead of the Week 4 game against the Chicago Bears.

The Broncos are likely moving on from Gregory due to the emergence of second-year outside linebacker Nik Bonitto. Starting instead of Gregory against the Bears, Bonitto had 2.5 sacks while also forcing a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.

The Miami Dolphins delivered one of the most convincing offensive performances in NFL history on Sunday, putting up 70 points against the Denver Broncos.

The Dolphins’ 20-70 win saw them score the most points since 1966, when Washington had 72 against the New York Giants. They gained 726 yards from scrimmage, becoming only the second team to ever do it after 1951’s Rams. Miami is also the first team to score five passing touchdowns and five rushing touchdowns in a single game.

Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 23-of-26 passes attempted while throwing for 309 yards and four touchdowns before exiting the game in the early fourth quarter. Rookie De’Von Achane rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns while adding two receiving TDs.

Star wideout Tyreek Hill finished the game with nine receptions for 157 yards and a TD while running back Raheem Mostert combined for 142 yards and four touchdowns from scrimmage.

“That’s a lot of players executing a lot of things to a standard that’s unrelenting,” Dolphins’ coach Mike McDaniel said after the game. “When you have a lead — so many leads are vulnerable in this league. So we’d talked at length all offseason just about adversity, and sometimes adversity is having a two-score lead because you can let the atmosphere dictate your product.

The Dolphins also had a shot for the NFL record, finding themselves at Broncos 26-yard line with one minute left on the clock. However, instead of kicking what would be a record-breaking field goal, McDaniel instructed backup quarterback Mike White to take a knee.

“It felt like chasing points and chasing a record, that’s not what we came to the game to do,” McDaniel explained his decision.

The Denver Broncos’ talented running back Javonte Williams is close to returning from an ACL tear that cost him the majority of the 2022 season. According to Williams, he is expecting to be medically cleared by the time Broncos start their training camp.

Williams explained that he feels ready to get into action but knows that the team will have the final say.

“I mean, that’s the plan,” Williams said about his participation in the training camp. “I feel like I’m ready to go … It’s just all about the evaluation, how the Broncos feel about it.”

After splitting reps with Melvin Gordon in his rookie year, Williams entered the 2022 campaign as the team’s starting running back. The former second-round pick rushed for 204 yards last season before going down with a knee injury during a Week 4 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Broncos are counting on Williams to be their No. 1 back in 2023 if we are to judge by their offseason moves. The team didn’t use any of their draft picks on a running back and mostly targeted low-cost veterans in the free agency. They signed Samaje Perine and Tony Jones Jr. on one-year deals while also having last year’s pickup Tyler Badie on their roster.

The Denver Broncos announced on Tuesday that they had released their longtime kicker Brandon McManus.

McManus is leaving the Broncos after spending nine seasons with the franchise. He was previously the only remaining player from the team that won the Super Bowl 50.

McManus played a significant role in the Broncos’ road to Super Bowl win during the 2015 NFL season. He made all of his 10 field goal attempts across three playoff games, including going three-for-three on FGs and scoring an extra point in a 24–10 Super Bowl win over the Carolina Panthers.

“Developing into one of the NFL’s most productive kickers, Brandon made so many clutch kicks for this franchise over the years as a Super Bowl champion and team captain. He will always hold a special place in Denver Broncos history,” Broncos’ general manager George Paton said in a statement.

McManus had two more years left on the four-year, $17.2 million contract extension he signed in 2020. However, the Broncos decided to move on from him regardless after he had one of his worst campaigns in 2022. The 32-year-old player made only 77.8% of his field goal attempts while also missing two extra points.

According to recent reports, the Broncos will most likely turn to ex-Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher as McManus’ replacement. Maher already worked out with Denver and is expected to sign a contract in the coming day.

The Denver Broncos are bringing back veteran safety Kareem Jackson for another run in 2023. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jackson, and the Broncos will reunite after agreeing to a one-year deal over the weekend.

Jackson reportedly signed a contract that comes with a $2.6 million base salary for the upcoming season. There was interest in Jackson from other teams, but the player wanted to wait out for the Broncos and see if there was a place for him in the plans of Denver’s new head coach Sean Payton.

Jackson was a standout performer for the Broncos in 2022 despite being on the back end of his career at 34. He didn’t miss a single game last season, the only Denver defensive player to do so, while playing 1,139 snaps. The veteran finished the campaign with career-high 94 tackles while adding three passes defended and two recovered fumbles.

With Jackson back in the building, the Broncos expect to have one of the most formidable and consistent safety duos in the league. The team has All-Pro Justin Simmons penciled in as a starter in the free safety position.

The 2023 season will be the fifth for Kareem Jackson in Denver. He previously spent the first nine years of his career with the Houston Texans. Jackson’s career stats include 901 tackles, 107 passes defended, 20 interceptions, 3.0 sacks, and four defensive touchdowns.

Denver Broncos General Manager George Paton confirmed on Thursday that he is determined to fend off any incoming offers for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy this trade window, keeping the 24-year-old player with the Broncos for another season. Paton did not mention whether the team would pick-up Jeudy’s fifth-year option.

“I spoke at the owner’s meetings. We’re high, really high on Jerry,” Paton confirmed during a news conference. “We don’t anticipate doing anything with Jerry. Jerry finished strong — the last five games, over 500 yards. He was one of the top receivers in the league. We like Jerry. He’s going to be here.”

Jeudy has proven to be a major asset for the Broncos as of late, making 33 catches for 458 yards and three touchdowns during his last five games for the team.

The Broncos have until May 2 to activate the fifth-year option on Jeudy’s rookie contract, roughly to the value of $13 million fully guaranteed in 2024.

Denver Broncos consultant John Elway has left his position after his contract with the team expired, NFL Network’s James Palmer reported on Tuesday.

This brings an end to Elway’s 26-year tenure with the Broncos, including 16 years as a player and another decade in the Broncos’ front office.

While NFL Network reported that the team decided against renewing Elway’s contract, Elway himself revealed that his departure has been planned by both sides for a while.

“I’ve enjoyed the relationship with the Broncos for a long, long time,” the 62-year-old said in an interview Tuesday with 9NEWS. “I told Greg I’d be happy to be a resource for him and help in any way that I can. I just wanted the flexibility. They’re in great hands. I still plan on being around to watch and be a resource for [CEO] Greg [Penner] or [general manager] George [Paton] if I can.”

Elway played for the Broncos from 1983 until 1998, leading them to five Super Bowls with two victories.

When the Denver Broncos drafted wideout Jerry Jeudy in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the team believed they were getting a cornerstone of their offense for years to come. But after just three seasons, it appears that the Broncos are ready to move on from Alabama product.

The Broncos have recently signaled the remainder of the league that Jeudy is available in trade talks but are reportedly asking for a steep price. Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado reported earlier this week that Denver wants a first-round pick or a high second-rounder and a player in order to part ways with Jeudy.

Several teams are believed to be interested, including the New England Patriots, the Cleveland Browns, and the Dallas Cowboys, but neither has been ready to meet the asking price just yet.

The Broncos are most likely shopping Jerry Jeudy because he hadn’t developed as the No.1 wide receiver they envisioned when they drafted him. The team could also use additional draft capital as they have traded away their high picks to acquire quarterback Russell Wilson and head coach Sean Payton.

Jeudy is coming off his best season as a pro in 2022, finishing the campaign with career highs in receptions (67), receiving yards (972), and touchdowns (6).

Former Stanford coach David Shaw attended an interview with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, sources confirmed to ESPN. The Broncos are on the hunt for a candidate to fill the vacant position of head coach at the franchise.

After spending nine seasons coaching in the NFL, Shaw became Stanford’s head coach—a role he held onto for 16 years before deciding to step down in November.

“I prayed about it, I thought about it,” Shaw said following his decision. “With every hour, it seemed it was more cemented in my head. The phrase that kept coming to me is: ‘It’s time.'”

Over his 16 seasons at Stanford’ Shaw became the team’s most successful coach in history, with a 96-54 career record. Shaw struggled during his final two seasons at Stanford, however, with the team going down 3-16 in Pac-12 play which includes back-to-back losses against rival California.

Shaw has become a potential replacement for former Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett considering his wealth of experience. Prior to his Stanford career, Shaw served as an assistant coach to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Oakland Raiders, and the Baltimore Ravens.
