The Cleveland Browns have been dealt a devastating blow in their attempts to return to the playoffs. The team’s starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson, needs to undergo shoulder surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of the 2023 season.

According to the Browns’ statement, Watson sustained an ankle and a shoulder injury in the first half of Sunday’s 33-31 win over the divisional rivals Baltimore Ravens. MRI tests on Monday revealed that the 28-year-old player has a high-ankle sprain and a “displaced fracture to the glenoid” in his throwing shoulder.

After consultations with Browns’ medical staff, Watson decided to undergo surgery in order to “avoid further structural damage” on his shoulder. He is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2024 NFL season.

“I’m still in disbelief. I’m still trying to process all the information,” Watson told reporters on Wednesday. “I felt like we were turning a corner to really make a run and still believe we still will with the guys in this locker room. I just wanted to physically be a part of it. … It’s tough to try to wrap everything around my head right now.”

Deshaun Watson previously experienced issues with his throwing shoulders, being forced to miss four games earlier in the season. In six games he played, the Browns went 5-1, while Watson threw for 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns, and four passes.

In Watson’s absence, the Browns will turn to rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson as their starter. Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick out of UCLA, already has one start as a pro under his belt, filling in for Watson in Week 4 in a 28–3 loss to the Ravens.

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback Deshaun Watson wants to play with wide receiver Deshaun Hopkins again.

Speaking with reports at a charity golf tournament on Tuesday, Watson said that he is hoping Hopkins will consider a reunion in Cleveland after the two previously shared a locker room with the Houston Texans. Hopkins is currently a free agent, having been released by the Arizona Cardinals last week.

“Of course, we would love to have him,” Watson shared.

However, Watson admitted that there is only so much he can do to make it happen.

“He knows that we had a lot of connections, but that’s kind of out of my range of things,” he added. “So all I can do is make a call and see what happens and let AB (Browns’ general manager Andrew Berry) do the rest.”

It remains to be seen whether Watson gets his wish, although it seems highly unlikely at the moment. The Browns are currently in a tough salary cap position and would have to get really creative to offer Hopkins the kind of contract he wants. They also face tough competition, with teams like the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs also being interested in veterans.

Watson and Hopkins played two full seasons together in Houston and showed a great connection. Hopkins had 100+ catches and 1,100+ receiving yards while earning First-Team All-Pro nods in both of those seasons.

The Cleveland Browns will be starting fresh at the quarterback position after four up-and-down seasons with Baker Mayfield. The franchise just confirmed the acquisition of Pro Bowl signal-caller Deshaun Watson, who is coming to Cleveland in a trade with the Houston Texans.

In order to get Watson, the Browns gave up significant draft assets. They will send the Texans their first-round picks in 2022 (No. 13), 2023, and 2024 alongside third-round selection in 2023 and fourth-rounder in 2024.

As part of the trade, Watson will also receive a new contract. The deal is for five years and $230 million, all of which is guaranteed. This is the largest guaranteed contract ever given to an NFL player and makes him the second-highest-paid QB in the league in terms of average annual salary. The Browns gave the 26-year-old player a new deal despite the fact that he had a four-year, $177.5 million extension, signed with the Texans in 2020, starting this season.

Deshaun Watson asked to be traded last offseason, becoming disgruntled in Houston after the franchise didn’t consider his inputs during their search for a new general manager and head coach. The Clemson product spent the 2021 season with the Texans regardless, since interested teams were cautious about trading for Watson due to his off-the-field issues and steep asking price. However, the weak QB class in this year’s draft and lack of veteran options caused some of his suitors to change their minds.

Thanks to a no-trade clause in his contract, Watson had a big say in his next destination. He eventually shortlisted his options to the New Orleans Saints, the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers, and the Browns, meeting with each team in person. The Saints and the Falcons were considered the favorites towards the end of the process, but Cleveland’s contract offer proved to be enough to shift the odds in their favor.

The Browns made several other QB-related moves in the past couple of days, trading backup Case Keenum and bringing in veteran Jacoby Brissett. They are also expected to trade last year’s starter and former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield in the coming weeks.

Following discussions regarding a potential trade, Deshaun Watson will remain with the Houston Texans until the next offseason, NFL league sources have revealed. This news came just two days before the NFL’s trade deadline.

While faced with much opposition by those who wished to see Watson’s departure from the team, Texans general manager Nick Caserio has remained intent on only parting ways with the player upon receiving a deal that he believes reflects Watson’s true worth. The Texans are, however, reportedly open to resuming trade negotiations during the next offseason.

Texans owner Cal McNair would ideally like to see Watson traded before Tuesday’s deadline, however, he resolved to leave Caserio with the discretion to make a final decision.

Watson had been linked with potential moves to several teams during the offseason, including the Miami Dolphins and the Carolina Panthers. While Watson desired a place in the Dolphins’ team, Miami stated that he would have to resolve his ongoing legal issues before a move could be sealed. Watson also reportedly waived his no-trade clause for the Dolphins and is believed to not have done the same for the Panthers.

The Miami Dolphins are reportedly closer than ever to making a trade with the Houston Texans and acquiring Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson. But this isn’t stopping the head coach Brian Flores from publicly endorsing the team’s current starter Tua Tagovailoa.

Speaking with reporters on Friday, Flores declined to comment on the Watson rumors and instead said the Dolphins are happy with the QB they already have.

“I don’t really get into rumors. Tua is our quarterback,” Flores said. “We’re happy with the quarterback, our quarterback situation. I’ll leave it at that, which I’ve said multiple times.”

Miami has been the number one favorite to land Watson ever since the star QB asked for a trade from the Texans. Still, the Dolphins played it slowly as Houston set a huge asking price that no other NFL team was ready to meet. Late, however, the two sides have managed to find a common ground, and reports say that the deal might be finalized as soon as the end of the week.

The Dolphins have selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in 2020 with intentions to make him the franchise’s quarterback of the future. However, Miami doesn’t seem to be convinced that Tagovailoa can actually become this after having an opportunity to see him at work.

The biggest knock about Tagovailoa is his durability, considering he struggled with injuries both in his rookie year and now in his sophomore campaign. He also failed to step up in big moments and is yet to produce a statement game in the NFL.

The Houston Texans are unlikely to field their disgruntled quarterback Deshaun Watson anytime soon if ever again. But this doesn’t mean that the organization is willing to take any offer just to send him out of town.

According to Houston Chronicle‘s John McClain, the Texans want to accommodate Watson’s trade request but are also willing to play the waiting game. He also adds that the player won’t be moved until new general manager Nick Caserio receives “the offer he wants.”

The Houston Texans signed Deshaun Watson to a massive four-year, $177.5 million contract extension a year ago, and it seemed the franchise is finally settled on the quarterback position for years to come. However, a disappointing 2020 NFL campaign and organizational changes put a strain on the relationship between the two sides.

Reportedly, Watson was unhappy for not being included in the search for a new general manager and felt like he is not valued by the organization. Shortly after the start of the offseason, the 25-year-old player submitted an official trade request.

The Texans initially tried to mend the relationship, but after a while, the franchise started listening to the trade calls. Still, neither team was ready to offer a combination of multiple first-round draft picks and star players that Houston wants.

In his four seasons in the league, Deshaun Watson earned three Pro Bowl nods and led the Houston Texans to a 28-25 record as a starter. He currently has the NFL-record 67.8 percent passing completion while throwing for 14,539 yards and 104 touchdowns.

The Houston Texans remain confident that they can convince star quarterback Deshaun Watson to reconsider the trade request he made a few weeks ago. But in case they are forced to let the Pro Bowler go, the Texans want a ransom-type package in return.

Houston Chronicle NFL reporter John McClain recently shared a type of a deal that Texans would consider for Watson. According to him, the organization seeks at least two first-round picks, two second-rounders, and two young defensive players that can start right away.

The Texans’ steep price isn’t surprising at all, and the final package could become even more lucrative if they manage to kick-start a bidding war between the teams. Watson is one of the top five quarterbacks in the league and is only entering his fifth NFL season. He also just had a career-season, throwing for a career-high 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns while also rushing for 444 yards and three scores.

There is no doubt that he can play at a high level for at least a decade longer, so teams won’t be too cautious about surrendering assets to get him.

The issue for the Texans is that Watson has a no-trade clause, which greatly limits their market. The team that could give Houston all they want and probably more is the New York Jets, but it’s unclear whether the player will have an interest in swapping one dysfunctional situation for another one.

Other suitors include the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, and Carolina Panthers.

Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson is reportedly unhappy with the franchise and would like to be traded. According to sources close to the organization, Watson’s preferred destination at this point would be the Miami Dolphins.

The biggest reason why Watson would like out of Houston was the Texans’ decision to ignore his input in the search for a new general manager and head coach.

Watson was promised that he’d get a say in the process, but the team went on to hire New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio as a GM without consulting with the player. The team also failed to interview Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, despite the fact that he was Watson’s preferred choice.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport now reports that Watson decided to give the Texans a silent treatment and is not returning their calls.

Deshaun Watson inked a four-year, $177.5 million extension with the Texans back in September and got a no-trade clause as part of the deal. This ultimately gives him a final say on his next team if he ends up pushing for a trade.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported earlier this week that Watson has Miami at the top of his list and might be interested in moving to Florida if the Dolphins include rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the deal.

Despite all of this, it would be hard to see the Texans parting way with Watson. He is a generational talent, and any package that they receive from the Dolphins or any other team would probably not be enough to compensate for the things he brings to the team.

The best way for the Texans to move forward would be to repair their relationship with Watson and commit to giving him more input in the head coaching search.

The Houston Texans are officially out of the playoff picture, so their last three games of the regular season will be just for show. But even with nothing to play for, the Texans are determined to play their best players and go for a win.

Houston’s interim coach Romeo Crennel confirmed this to reporters when asked whether he is thinking about shutting down star quarterback Deshaun Watson for the season in order to avoid the risk of injury.

“If you shut down Watson, then should you shut down the rest of the team and everybody pack up and go home for three games left?”, pondered Crennel on Thursday. “So, we’re going to play the games and try to win as many as we can.”

Watson shares the same mindset as his coach, believing that each game under his belt will help him become a better player.

“I want to finish this season out strong,” he explained. “I want to continue to get the reps that I want to get to be able to continue to grow as a quarterback and as a player and as a teammate.”

Despite the Houston Texans’ struggles in 2020, Watson has been having a stellar season on an individual level. He is currently completing a career-high 68.9 percent of his passes and has thrown for 3,761 yards and 25 touchdowns. The 25-year-old Pro Bowler also only has six receptions for the year.

The Houston Texans have done what everyone expected them to do this offseason, they signed their franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson to a huge extension.

Watson signed a four-year contract extension worth a total of $156 million, which becomes the second-richest contract in the history of the NFL, right behind the deal that the Chiefs gave their quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes this summer.

According to reports, Watson will make an average of $39 million a year with a $27 million signing bonus. The extension also
includes a no-trade clause.

Watson had two years left on his current rookie contract, but the Texans believed that it was time to award and lock-up their franchise quarterback for the long-term. The quarterback’s agent and the Texans have been working on the extension since April.

After years of instability at the position, Watson has played in 38 games, starting 37 of them, in his first three seasons with the team, leading them to the playoffs in the last two seasons.

Houston moved up in the 2017 draft to get Watson with the 12th overall pick. He has thrown for 9,716 yards and 71 touchdowns in his three-year career.
