]]>Smith became the first wide receiver in 29 years and only third non-quarterback in 15 seasons to receive the most prestigious award in college football.
Smith, who was also named The AP’s College Football Player of the Year, finished well ahead of the competition by receiving 447 first-place votes and a total of 1,856 points. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was second with 1,187 points (222 first-place votes), while Smith’s Crimson Tide teammate Mac Jones took third place with 1,130 points (138 first-place votes). Florida’s signal-caller Kyle Trask was fourth, receiving 61 first-place votes and 737 points.
Although quarterbacks usually have the edge in Heisman Trophy voting, DeVonta Smith’s win doesn’t come as a surprise. Smith was the most dominant wide receiver in college football last year, and it wasn’t even close.
In 12 games with the Crimson Tide, Smith totaled 105 catches for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding one rushing score and punt return TD. He had six games with 100+ yards while also passing the 200+ yards mark twice.
Thanks to his college achievements, Smith is expected to be a top 10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He is projected as the best wideout in his class and the fourth-best player available.

]]>Jones and Smith were revealed as finalists for the Heisman Trophy in 2020, joined by Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence and Florida QB Kyle Trask.
The winner of the award will be announced on January 5th via a virtual ceremony.
Unlike last season, when LSU’s Joe Burrow was a clear winner, there is no definitive favorite in 2020, and each player has a case that could get him the award.
DeVonta Smith would be an intriguing pick as he would be the first non-QB winner of the award since 2015 when Alabama’s Derrick Henry received the honors. Smith has been the best wide receiver in college football this year, racking up 98 receptions for 1,511 yards and 17 touchdowns.
His teammate, Mac Jones, also has a shot, leading the Crimson Tide to an 11-0 record with some great performances. Jones threw for 3,739 yards and 32 TDs this season while having only four interceptions.
Trevor Lawrence was a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy before the season started, but the fact that he missed some time this season because of COVID-19 puts him at a disadvantage. Lawrence also wasn’t as prolific as some other QBs in college football this season, although he still had 2,753 passing yards and 22 TDs.
Finally, Kyle Trask has arguably been the most productive signal-caller in college, leading the nation with 43 touchdowns while also throwing for 4,125 yards, both of which are Florida records. The fact that the program finished with an 8-3 record, however, might hinder his chances.
