England manager Gareth Southgate has stated that he is unsure of his managerial future following the Three Lions’ exit from the World Cup in a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to France.

“The energy it takes through these tournaments is enormous. I want to make the right decision, whatever that is for the team, for England, for the FA,” Southgate admitted. “I’ve got to be sure whatever decision I make is the right one. I think it’s right to take time to do that because I know in the past my feelings have fluctuated in the immediate aftermath of tournaments.”

Southgate’s contract with England is valid through 2024. As it stands, the English Football Association is keen for the 52-year-old manager to continue coaching the Three Lions, particularly after he took them to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of the delayed Euro 2020.

Losing the quarterfinal of the World Cup is the earliest tournament exit that England has suffered since Southgate took charge in 2016. The team will now turn its focus to qualifying for the 2024 European Football Championship set to take place in Germany.

England striker Harry Kane is set to undergo a scan on his right ankle, sources revealed on Wednesday. The 29-year-old player was substituted with 14 minutes to go in his team’s 6-2 victory over Iran after being on the receiving end of a heavy tackle from Morteza Pouraliganji. Kane was seen wearing a strapping on his leg as he left the Khalifa International Stadium following the game.

Although manager Gareth Southgate insisted that Kane was “fine” after the game, the England captain will undergo a scan sometime on Wednesday. It is so far unconfirmed whether the scan is a precautionary measure or a result of a more severe issue.

Kane’s potential absence from the team is a major concern for the Three Lions given the player’s impact on the team throughout his career. With 51 goals in 76 international appearances, Kane is just two goals short of reaching Wayne Rooney’s England goalscoring record.

Currently, England sits at the top of Group B with three points. Both the United States and Wales are on one point after the two played out a 1-1 draw. England next faces the USA on Friday evening before playing their final group game against Wales on Tuesday.

England has been relegated from League A of the UEFA Nations League following a 1-0 loss to Italy at the San Siro in Milan on Friday. This puts the Three Lions at the bottom of Group 3 with just two points in five matches and no chance of survival despite having one match remaining.

Giacomo Raspadori scored a stunning strike in the 68th minute to hand the Azzurri the victory in what was a tight game with few scoring chances for either side. This is the first time that the sides have faced off since Italy defeated England in a penalty shootout to claim the Euro 2020 trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Despite putting on a resolute defensive display, England’s front three of Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, and captain Harry Kane were unable to put sufficient pressure on Italy’s backline to force a breakthrough.

In what effectively doubled as a World Cup warm-up match, England midfielder Declan Rice claimed that his team controlled much of the game despite the scoreline. “I didn’t think it was all bad tonight,” Rice commented. “It’s coming. It was a much better performance than we saw in the summer. It’s not that we’re not creating the chances. I see it in training. There are goals for fun. Trust me, we are going to be good.”

The beauty of a soccer competition such as England’s EFL Cup is that any team can find themselves advancing on a given day, no matter the strength of the team that they might face.

On Tuesday night at Colchester Community Stadium in the East of England, both Tottenham Hotspur and the tiny, fourth-division club of Colchester United were reminded of that reality.

The League Two club, which normally finds itself facing teams like Exeter City and Macclesfield Town, had their moment of glory after winning a penalty shootout against the 2019 Champions League runner-ups in the Third Round of the competition.

After playing to a 0-0 draw in regulation, The U’s were able to squeak past Tottenham after winning a penalty shootout 4-3. When Lucas Moura’s penalty shot to force a fifth and final round clanged off of the post, pandemonium erupted as Colchester’s fans celebrated one of the biggest victories in the history of the humble club.

Amazingly, this is the second consecutive Premier League team that Colchester United has beaten in this year’s EFL Cup competition. They also held Crystal Palace to a 0-0 regulation draw before winning a penalty shootout in the last round of the competition.

Spurs will look to get back on track in EPL action against Southampton on Saturday after experiencing more than a little frustration in their shock Tuesday elimination.

Manchester City completed an unprecedented English domestic treble on Saturday with a 6-0 rout of Watford in the FA Cup final at Wembley in front of 85,854 spectators.

The win meant that Manchester City won all of England’s domestic competitions this season. No team had ever won the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup in the same season until Man City did so this year.

In addition, they also won the FA Community Shield last summer, a matchup pitting the winner of the previous season’s EPL and the FA Cup.

While Watford went into Saturday’s final with hopes of upsetting the English powerhouse, it was not to be. Man City, the vastly superior side, dominated the entire game and put the cherry on top on the best season in the club’s history.

Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling both scored braces for Manchester City. David Silva, who scored the opener in the 26th minute, and Kevin de Bruyne, also chipped in a goal.

While he didn’t find the net, Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva was also key in the victory, providing two assists to his teammates.

The match, Manchester City’s final game of the season, was representative of the domestic dominance that they displayed throughout the 2018-19 season.

The team will now rest until late July, when their preseason campaign will begin in Japan.
