The beauty of a soccer competition such as England’s EFL Cup is that any team can find themselves advancing on a given day, no matter the strength of the team that they might face.

On Tuesday night at Colchester Community Stadium in the East of England, both Tottenham Hotspur and the tiny, fourth-division club of Colchester United were reminded of that reality.

The League Two club, which normally finds itself facing teams like Exeter City and Macclesfield Town, had their moment of glory after winning a penalty shootout against the 2019 Champions League runner-ups in the Third Round of the competition.

After playing to a 0-0 draw in regulation, The U’s were able to squeak past Tottenham after winning a penalty shootout 4-3. When Lucas Moura’s penalty shot to force a fifth and final round clanged off of the post, pandemonium erupted as Colchester’s fans celebrated one of the biggest victories in the history of the humble club.

Amazingly, this is the second consecutive Premier League team that Colchester United has beaten in this year’s EFL Cup competition. They also held Crystal Palace to a 0-0 regulation draw before winning a penalty shootout in the last round of the competition.

Spurs will look to get back on track in EPL action against Southampton on Saturday after experiencing more than a little frustration in their shock Tuesday elimination.
