Texas Rangers’ right-hand pitcher Jacob deGrom will undergo a Tommy John surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of the 2023 MLB campaign. The news was confirmed on Tuesday by Rangers’ general manager Chris Young.

DeGrom made six starts this season, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts. However, he hasn’t played since late April due to issues with forearm stiffness and elbow inflammation.

The Rangers made a big splash in this year’s free agency by landing deGrom, who came to Texas on a five-year, $185 million deal. And while the early returns on the investment seem promising, the team will now have to wait around 12 months before seeing their prized pitcher on the mound again.

DeGrom himself is frustrated with the development but told the Dallas Morning News that he is determined to overcome the challenge.

“It’s not ideal. But at least we know what it is now,” said de Grom. “I want to get it fixed and will set a goal to be back before the end of next year.”

Jacob deGrom spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the New York Mets. He won the NL Cy Young Award twice and earned four All-Star nods while in New York. His career stats include an 84–57 record as a starter with a 2.53 ERA and 1,652 strikeouts.

The Texas Rangers star pitcher Jacob deGrom has been placed on his team’s 15-day injured list as he looks to recover from right elbow inflammation. DeGrom exited early twice in the past three games as a result.

General manager Chris Young confirmed that the starting pitcher underwent an MRI which showed the inflammation. He added that the team is expected to have a better idea of what to do with the player in seven to 10 days’ time.

“There’s no need to push him,” Young explained. “He came in today and felt OK, which is a positive, but given how important he is to us and our season, we’re going to play this very cautiously and see how he responds over the next several days to treatment.”

A two-time National League Cy Young Award winner, deGrom signed a $185 million, five-year contract with the Rangers in December after spending two seasons with the New York Mets that were marred by injuries.

Jacob deGrom has agreed to a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers. By luring the MLB’s top pitcher to Dallas, the Rangers are hoping to strengthen their struggling pitching lineup.

After spending all nine of his previous MLB seasons with the New York Mets, deGrom decided to opt out of the final two years of his contract. Despite missing out on the first four months of the season with a stress reaction in his shoulder, the 34-year-old remained a top trade target of the Rangers.

DeGrom’s contract is the latest in what has been a busy few months for the Rangers on the trade front. Less than a year ago, the Rangers closed a 10-year, $325 million contract with shortstop Corey Seager while signing second baseman Marcus Semien on a seven-year deal worth $175 million.

While finishing last season with a 5-4 record and 3.08 ERA in 11 starts, deGrom proved to be a reliable pitcher for the Mets, racking up 102 strikeouts against just eight walks, with nine home runs allowed.

All-Star pitcher Jacob deGrom might not suit up for the New York Mets again in the 2021 MLB season. According to Mets president Sandy Alderson, while deGrom recovered from an injury that kept him sidelined for the past two months, it’s uncertain whether he’ll return to pitching before the regular part of the campaign concludes.

He was shut down by the Mets due to an elbow sprain back in early July. Since then, the team remained tight-lipped about his condition, saying only that there is no structural damage involved.

In his chat with reporters on Tuesday, however, Alderson revealed that deGrom indeed had a partial UCL tear. According to him, the tear “resolved itself,” and the 33-year-old ace won’t need a procedure to resolve the issue.

Alderson explained that deGrom is currently getting his workload increased, but there are no guarantees that he will progress enough to resume playing in 2021.

“In terms of him pitching the rest of the season, I think that is still very much up in the air,” Alderson added.

Before going down with the injury, Jacob deGrom was in the midst of a stellar season that saw him post a 7-2 record as a starter with 1.08 ERA and 145 strikeouts. His 50 strikeouts in the first four starts in a season were a new MLB record.

Without deGrom on the mound, the Mets experienced a series of ups and downs that currently has them out of the postseason picture. They are currently own a 70-69 record that puts them four games behind the Atlanta Braves in NL East. In the wild-card hunt, Mets trail five games behind the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds.

New York Mets’ All-Star pitcher Jacob deGrom is getting rewarded for a standout season he had in 2018. According to several media outlets, including ESPN and New York Times, Mets and deGrom have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million extension.

deGrom’s extension will see him have an opt-out following the 2022 MLB season, while the Mets hold a club option for 2024. In case the team picks up the option, the 30-year-old’s extension will be for six-year and worth $170 million. The deal also has a no-trade clause.

deGrom, who won the NL Cy Young Award last season, had two years left on his old contract, being scheduled to make $17 million this season and up for arbitration in 2020.

Although New York Mets ended 2018 with 77-85 record, Jacob deGrom had an excellent individual season with 1.70 ERA in 217 innings. This not only led the league but was also the fifth-lowest ERA in a single season since 1969. He had 32 starts in which he went 10-9 but provided 269 strikeouts.

After receiving his majors debut in 2014, deGrom quickly established himself as the New York Mets’ leading pitcher and managed to win the NL Rookie of the Year award. He added two All-Star appearances later on alongside previously mentioned Cy Young Award. His MLB career stats include 55 – 41 record, 2.67 ERA and 1,000 strikeouts.

New York Mets’ pitcher Jacob deGrom continues to make his case for Cy Young award by making history. deGrom allowed just two runs against Miami Marlin on Tuesday, which meant this was his 26th straight start in which he allowed three or fewer runs per game. By doing so, the 30-year-old broke 108 years old MLB record, previously held by Chicago Cubs’ Leslie “King” Cole.

Cole went on a similar run during 1910 season, when he had 25 straight starts in which he allowed three or fewer runs per game.

Jacob deGrom is having an incredible season by all standards, with his latest stats for 2018 including 1.71 ERA, 2.06 FIP, 195 innings pitched, 239 strikeouts and 0.95 WHIP. His ERA is the best in the league at the moment, with his closest rival, Philadelphia Phillies’ Aaron Nola, having a full half-run ERA worse with 2.29.

Still, despite deGrom’s heroics, the New York Mets can’t get to a winning record. During his record-breaking run of 26th straight starts, Mets went 9-17. In this season, he is 8-9 as a starter.

Jacob deGrom made his debut in the majors in 2014. During his four years in New York, he posted a 53–40 record with 2.69 ERA. deGrom won the NL Rookie of the Year and has two All-Star appearances.
