Kevin Durant stunned the basketball world at the beginning of this week when he announced that he was leaving the Golden State Warriors to sign with the Brooklyn Nets in free agency.

Despite his departure, the Warriors appear to harbor no bad feelings after announcing that they plan to retire his #35 jersey after playing only three seasons with the franchise.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob published a press release after learning of Durant’s decision, and the team’s head man had nothing but positive things to say about the veteran superstar. It’s not surprising that there isn’t any bad blood considering the things that Durant accomplished during his brief time in Oakland.

Durant arrived to the team in the summer of 2016 and immediately made an impact. In his first year with the Dubs, he was named an All-Star and also led the Warriors to the NBA title, being named Finals MVP in the process.

It was more of the same for the 30-year-old the next season when he partnered with Steph Curry to lead the team to its second consecutive title and gathered another Finals MVP trophy.

All in all, Durant averaged 25.9 points per game during his three years in the Bay Area and led the franchise to two NBA titles. He’ll be honored as a team legend after Monday’s decision, and rightfully so.

Kevin Durant has declined his player option for the 2019/20 NBA season, which was worth $31.5 million, on his contract with Golden State Warriors and will officially become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

According to ESPN’s NBA Insider, Adrian Wojnarowski, Durant’s business manager Rich Kleiman recently informed Golden State’s general manager, Bob Myers about the player’s decision. Wojnarowski adds that Kleiman and Durant are currently in New York City, where they are planning their approach to the free agency.

Following Durant’s ACL injury in NBA Finals, which will sideline him for the entire next season, many people thought that the 30-year-old All-Star might consider the possibility of accepting his player option. This would allow him to recover in familiar surroundings and then enter the free agency in the summer of 2020 when he is expected to recover fully. It seems, however, that Durant decided to stick with the plan he plotted before the injury and test the market.

Besides the Warriors, who are expected to offer Kevin Durant a five-year, $221 million max-contract, there are several other teams hoping to lure him despite the injury.  It is believed that Durant will consider three of them: New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. Unlike Golden State, these other teams can offer him only a four-year, $164 million deal.

Durant averaged 26.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game in the past regular season.

Golden State Warriors managed to keep their dreams of a three-peat alive with a 106-105 win over the Toronto Raptors in NBA Finals’ Game 5. Still, this precious victory came with a huge price as Warriors’ star Kevin Durant tore his right Achilles tendon.

Durant, who was out for the last month with a calf strain, finally returned to court on Tuesday night in order to help his team avoid elimination. The 30-year-old All-Star opened the game in a great fashion, as he scored 11 points in just 12 minutes.

But 2 minutes and 9 seconds in the second quarter, Durant attempted to drive against Toronto’s Serge Ibaka before stumbling and losing the ball. He went down on the floor holding his right calf before being helped off the court.

Although Kevin Durant is scheduled to undergo an MRI in order to determine the severity of the injury, Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers already confirmed that they fear the worst.

“It’s an Achilles injury,” – said Myers after the game. “I don’t know the extent of it. He’ll have an MRI tomorrow. Prior to coming back he went through four weeks with a medical team, and it was thorough, and it was experts and multiple MRIs and multiple doctors, and we felt good about the process.”

If Durant really tore his Achilles, then he will most likely miss the entire 2019/20 NBA season. This fact will influence not only his future but also the entire league. Instead of hitting the free market this summer, Durant now might opt into his contract option with Golden State and become a free agent next year.

Durant averaged 26.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game this regular season.

Wednesday night proved to be full of mixed emotions for Golden State Warriors. While they managed to win Game 5 against Houston Rockets and take 3-2 lead in the series, Warriors also saw their best player Kevin Durant going down with what could be a serious injury.

Late in the third quarter, with Warriors being up by one point, Durant went for a mid-range jumper and scored the basket. He then took two steps toward his own half before starting to limp and holding his right ankle. Durant immediately went to the locker room and didn’t return to game.

“We’re all obviously disappointed for him,” – said Warriors coach Steve Kerr during a postgame news conference. “And excited about the win, but concerned for Kevin and disappointed for him. He’s been on this incredible playoff run, and I’m proud of our guys for pulling the game out. And we’ll see how Kevin’s doing tomorrow.”

While there were some initial concerns that Kevin Durant might have torn his ACL, Warriors think it’s a minor injury and are treating the issue as calf strain. Still, the severity of the injury will be known after Durant undergoes an MRI.

“We don’t know,” – said Warriors general manager Bob Myers when asked about the matter. “It’s a hard one to say, it really is. I don’t know until we see [the MRI]. And then [the doctors] determine the grades of these things, and then we’ll know.”

Kerr did add that he thinks it is unlikely that Durant ends up playing in Game 6 of the series which is scheduled for Friday night.

If Kevin Durant’s injury proves to be a more severe one, which could heavily influence Golden State Warriors’ chances to win their third consecutive NBA Title. Durant was not only the team’s best player in the regular season, but he was also a leader in the playoffs and their go-to guy when games were on the line.

Durant played 39.1 minutes on average in the playoffs while averaging 34.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

It was reported back in April that Golden State Warriors Kevin Durant will reject the player option on his two-year, $51 million deal with the team and become an unrestricted free-agent. If Durant ends up doing exactly this, it will be only to sign a new deal with the Warriors.

Kevin Durant spoke with ESPN‘s Rachel Nichols on Thursday and confirmed that he will resign with the Warriors in the summer.

“I’m planning on staying with the Warriors, and we’ll figure the rest out,” said Durant.
The 29-year-old also added that there the deal is in place and that there are only the “small details” to be figured out.

Kevin Durant took $10 million less than his worth on the market when signing a two-year deal in 2017, giving the Warriors cap space to keep their key role players Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston. According to ESPN’s Chris Haynes, that won’t be the case this time.
Golden State Warriors and Durant can take different approaches to the new contract including a four-year, $158 million max deal. Other options include a two-year, or three-year deal with player options.

Kevin Durant proved his worth in the Game 3 of 2018 NBA Finals on Thursday night when he scored 43 points alongside 13 rebounds and 7 assists and propelled the Warriors to victory. He will have the chance to win his second consecutive NBA title and if he stays with this team, it is hard to believe that there won’t be more of them.
