The LA Kings pulled off a blockbuster trade on Tuesday that saw them land center Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets. As part of the move, Dubois also agreed to an eight-year, $68 million extension with the Kings.

Dubois was set to become a restricted free agent this summer and didn’t have any intentions to remain with the Jets. The 25-year-old even asked to be traded earlier this month.

The Kings saw an opportunity to get a top player and swooped in, sending forwards Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari, and Gabriel Vilardi alongside a second-round draft pick in 2024 to the Jets. This was a small price to pay for a player that immediately makes the entire team better.

“Pierre-Luc Dubois is an elite two-way center with a unique skill set, and we’re excited to have him join the organization and commit to us long-term,” said Kings general manager Rob Blake in a statement. “Over the last few seasons, he has proven the ability to contribute to all facets of the game, and we are thrilled to be able to add a player of this caliber into our lineup.”

Pierre-Luc Dubois is coming off a strong campaign that saw him have career-high 63 points in 73 games. The Quebec native has a total of 302 points (120 goals and 173 assists) since making his debut in 2017–18.

The Los Angeles Kings made a surprising move on Wednesday, trading away their legendary goaltender Jonathan Quick. The Kings will send Quick and a pair of picks to the Columbus Blue Jackets while receiving goalie Joonas Korpisalo and defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov in exchange.

The picks Blue Jackets are getting are a third-round selection in 2024 and a conditional first-round selection in 2023. The conditional pick conveys if the Kings make the playoffs and turns into two second-rounders if they don’t.

Quick spent his entire NHL career with the Kings and served as their starting goalkeeper for the past 15 seasons. During that run, he helped the franchise win its only two Stanley Cups in 2011-12 and 2013-14 while making the All-Star game three times, among other individual accolades. He has a career .911 save percentage with a 2.46 goal-against average and 57 shutouts.

While Quick made a case to be considered the greatest goalie in the Kings’ history, the 37-year-old player struggled mightily this season. In 31 games he played in 2022-23, he posted an 11-13-4 record while having a .876 SV and 3.50 GAA. With the LA team still having a shot at winning the Pacific Division, general manager Rob Blake decided to make a difficult decision and improve on the position with what will most likely go down as an unpopular move.

Columbus’ general manager Jarmo Kekalainen issued a statement after the deal was announced, hinting that his organization primarily had draft assets in mind.

“Jonathan Quick is a two-time Stanley Cup winner who has been an outstanding goaltender in our league for a long time, and this deal provides us with draft capital that will be valuable as we move forward as an organization,” Kekalainen said.

The Los Angeles Kings have agreed to a new contract with their standout goalkeeper Cal Petersen. The team announced on Wednesday that Petersen inked a three-year extension that will keep him with the franchise through the 2024-25 NHL season.

According to the Kings’ announcement, the new extension will pay Peterson an annual salary of $5 million starting 2022-23 season.  The 26-year-old keeper still has one year left on the three-year, $2.5 million deal he signed back in 2019.

With Petersen under extension, the Kings now don’t have to worry about the goalkeeper position for the next few seasons as they also have Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Quick on board. Quick still has two years left on his deal.

While the Kings had a rough 2020-21, Cal Petersen emerged as the team’s preferred choice at goal and appeared in 35 games. Petersen finished the campaign posting 2.89 goals-against average and .911 save percentage, both career bests. This came after he only made 19 NHL appearances in the previous two seasons.

Petersen also serves as the goalie for the United States men’s national ice hockey team. He won the bronze medal with the U.S. at this year’s World Championship and was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.

Los Angeles Kings are using the suspension of NHL season to further evaluate their prospects, and it seems like they particularly liked what they saw from forward Tyler Madden. The team announced on Monday that they officially have Madden under contract, with the 20-year-old inking a three-year, entry-level contract.

Madden will join Kings after spending the previous two years with Northeastern University.

Madden played a total of 63 games on college, scoring 31 goals and dishing 34 assists. He was especially productive this past season when he had team-leading 37 points in 27 games en route to being named into Hockey East All-Star team.

Tyler Madden is also part of the United States national team, taking part in the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship. He scored three goals and added one assist in the competition, helping his country to win a silver medal.

Madden was originally drafted into NHL in 2018 by Vancouver Canucks. Kings eventually acquired his rights back in February in a trade that saw forward Tyler Toffoli head to Canada.

LA Kings are currently in an all-around rebuild, and that kind of situation isn’t exactly a good fit for a veteran player. This is why the team decided to part ways with defenseman Dion Phaneuf, buying out the final two years of 34-year-old’s contract. The news was confirmed to media by Los Angeles Kings general manager Rob Blake.

Blake hinted at the possibility of buying out Phaneuf in early June when he revealed that the team is trying to trade the veteran. One of the possibilities was making a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which would involve forward Patrick Marleau, but those talks didn’t come to fruition.

Phaneuf is coming off an abysmal season in which he only played 15 minutes on average while having six points and a minus-21 rating. He was also “a healthy scratch” on several occasions and ended playing just 67 games total.

Dion Phaneuf originally agreed to a seven-year, $49 million contract when he was in Maple Leafs in 2014. He was then traded to Ottawa Senators in 2016 and spent two seasons there before joining Kings. Phaneuf’s two remaining years had a projected $5.25-million annual cap hit.
