LAFC is reportedly in advanced talks with AC Milan’s Olivier Giroud and will try to convince the French striker to make a move to MLS in the summer. Giroud’s contract with Milan expires after the 2023-24 season, and he will become a free agent.

Tom Bogert of The Athletic reports that despite positive talks between the two sides, a deal is not imminent. Giroud will take some time to consider his other options, which include staying in Europe or heading to Saudi Arabia.

If Giroud chooses to join LAFC, he would be reunited with his compatriot Hugo Lloris. Giroud and Lloris were part of France’s national team that won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the World Cup 2022 finals.

Despite turning 37 in September, Giroud has been playing at a high level this season. He has 14 goals and nine assists in 36 matches in all competitions while helping Milan to second place in Seria A standings at the moment and to make a Europa League quarterfinals appearance.

Olivier Giroud started his professional career in his native France, where he suited up for Grenoble, Tours, and Montpellier, among other teams. He made a switch to Premier League side Arsenal in 2012 and became one of the club’s key players, scoring 105 goals in 253 matches in six seasons. Giroud then went on to play for Chelsea before joining Milan ahead of the 2021–22 campaign.

LAFC is reportedly close to finalizing a deal for Tottenham’s veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Lloris is expected to join the MLS side in early 2024.

Lloris has a contract with Tottenham that runs until the end of the 2023-24 season. However, the London club will allow their longtime player and former captain to leave early so he could take part in the LAFC’s preseason.

Hugo Lloris joined Tottenham from Lyon in 2012 and has since made 447 appearances for the club. However, upon the arrival of new head coach Ange Postecoglou,  Lloris lost his place on the goal and was demoted to the No. 3 option behind Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster. He hasn’t played in a single game in the 2023-24 campaign.

Lloris attempted to secure a move elsewhere this past summer but failed to find a fitting option, causing him to stay with Spurs. Now, the LAFC came calling, needing a starting goalkeeper after Maxime Crepeau left the club following the 2023 season as a free agent.

Lloris hasn’t won a single trophy during his time with Tottenham, but he had much more success with France’s national team. He was part of the squad that won the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and UEFA Nations League in 2020–21. The 37-year-old, who became the country’s most-capped player in history with 145 games under his belt, retired from the international stage after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The reigning MLS champions LAFC continue to add talent to their already deep roster. The team announced on Friday that they had completed the transfer of Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz from Premier League side Leeds United.

Bogusz inked a four-year contract with the MLS side that includes a club option for the 2027 season. While LAFC didn’t disclose financial details of the move, the reports say that the transfer was worth $1 million.

“Mateusz is a talented young player with great ability who will provide another quality piece to our club,” LAFC general manager John Thorrington said in a statement. “He is a dynamic and exciting attacker who has the ability to help our group in our ambitions to win more trophies. I am excited to welcome Mateusz to Los Angeles.”

Mateusz Bogusz has been with Leeds United since 2019 and was once considered to be among their most talented players. However, he spent most of his time on loans with lower-tier Spanish clubs and only got to play three official games for Leeds.

LAFC already added several other players with experience in top European leagues this year. Among the arrivals were right-back Sergi Palencia, who joined from Saint-Etienne, and former German youth international Timothy Tillman, who came from Greuther Furth.

LAFC won its first-ever MLS Cup on Saturday night, coming from behind to draw 3-3 with Philadelphia Union before winning 3-0 on penalties.

Kellyn Acosta opened the scoring for LAFC in the 28th minute, handing the Los Angeles-based side the half-time lead. In the 59th minute, Dániel Gazdag leveled for Union before Jesús Murillo restored LAFC’s lead with seven minutes left on the clock. Just two minutes later, Jack Elliott brought Philadelphia to level yet again to send the game into extra time.

With the game looking set to go to penalties, Elliot scored in the 124th minute to hand Union what they believed to be the match-winner.

That was before former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale emerged as a game-changer for LAFC, coming off the bench in extra time to score four minutes later at the death of the match to send it to penalties.

Backup goalkeeper John McCarthy proved to be a star for LAFC in his own right, saving two penalties after only getting brought into the game during extra time. Denis Athanase Bouanga, Ryan Hollingshead, and Ilie Sánchez Farrés all converted their penalties to hand LAFC MLS Cup glory.

“This place deserves this,” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo exclaimed following his team’s win. “These fans are amazing. They deserve a Cup, and they got it.”

Los Angeles FC defeated Austin FC 3-0 in the Western Conference Final at the Banc of California Stadium on Sunday. This decisive victory hands the Black and Gold a spot in the MLS Cup final; the first in the club’s history.

“Our guys did an emphatic job,” LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo exclaimed, adding, “That was the best I have seen implementing our match play from the beginning to the end. I’m very proud of the guys, but what I experienced in the locker room was hunger and a want for more.”

LAFC grabbed asserted their dominance over Austin from early on in the first half, with Cristian Arango heading home from a Carlos Vela corner in the 29th minute. The team doubled its lead in the 62nd minute, with Carlos Vela whipping in another dangerous corner, this time resulting in a Maximiliano Urruti own goal. In the 81st minute, LAFC put the final nail in the coffin as Kwadwo Opoku came off the bench to seal his team’s third goal.

The reigning Supporters’ Shield winners and top seeds in the MLS playoff now wait to play Philadelphia Union, who defeated New York City winner of the Eastern Conference Final, set to be contested by Philadelphia Union and New York City FC. The winner will face the Black and Gold in the MLS Cup Final on Saturday.

LAFC has once again emerged as the better Los Angeles team when the stake is the highest, beating the LA Galaxy 3-2 in Western Conference Semifinals on Friday. LAFC is now through to the Conference finals, where it awaits the winner of the match between FC Dallas and Austin FC.

LAFC opened the scoring with Denis Bouanga in the 23rd minute but couldn’t hold onto the lead as Galaxy made it level via Samuel Grandsir before halftime. The second half lacked action for the most part before Bouanga tucked his second goal of the game in the 80th minute to get his team ahead again. This lead also didn’t last for long as Dejan Joveljic made it 2-2 just five minutes later.

Halfway through stoppage time, LAFC struck again. Cristian Arango used the confusion in the penalty box after a corner kick and blasted the ball into the net from a close range. However, the Galaxy couldn’t come back this time, and LAFC held on for a memorable win.

“It’s something that the fans deserved, my family deserved it, we all deserved it,” Arango said after the game. “It’s an uncountable amount of happiness that we needed as a group. Now we need to continue on this path.”

Galaxy still holds the edge in El Tráfico, having won seven LA derby matches compared to LAFC’s five. However, LAFC is now 2-0 against Galaxy in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The two teams also played against each other in Western Conference Semifinals in 2019, with LAFC beating Galaxy 5-3.

LAFC means business this summer. After capturing Welsh superstar forward Gareth Bale, the MLS side is now reportedly close to sealing a deal for former Barcelona star winger Cristian Tello.

According to multiple reports, Tello, who is a free agent, has already agreed on a three-year deal with the Los Angeles team. He will play out the 2022 season as a Designated Player before continuing on Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) player. The contract was most likely structured this way because Bale is currently on a TAM contract but has an option to take the DP spot in 2023.

LAFC has not yet finalized the deal because they are waiting for Uruguay international Brian Rodriguez to depart the club. That should happen soon, as Rodriguez is expected to join Mexico’s Club America.

Cristian Tello spent the 2021-22 season with La Liga side Real Betis. He made 35 appearances in all competitions while scoring five goals and dishing three assists to help the club fifth in the domestic competition and win Copa del Rey.

Tello is best known for his time with Barca, where he was a key rotational player during the La Liga-winning campaign in 2012-13. He later lost his place in the team and spent time with Porto and Fiorentina on loan before securing a permanent move to Betis in 2017. The 31-year-old player has one senior team appearance for Spain.

Expect to continue seeing Carlos Vela in an LAFC shirt for years to come. According to Doug McIntyre of FOX Sports, Vela and LAFC are in the process of finalizing a new contract agreement.

Vela was set to become a free agent in the summer and was free to negotiate with other teams since the start of the year. However, the Mexican striker wants to continue building his legacy in MLS and hasn’t given much consideration to other offers.

Reportedly, the new deal will keep Vela as a Designate Player and see him remain in Los Angeles for at least through the 2023 season. The 33-year-old player is already enjoying a great start to the 2022 MLS season and already has four goals next to his name.

Carlos Vela became LAFC’s first designated player in August 2017, almost six months before the team was set to make its debut in MLS. Since then, Vela has established himself as one of the league’s biggest stars. He played 107 games in all competitions for the LA team, scoring 71 goals and dishing 31 assists.

Vela was part of LAFC’s team that won the Supporters’ Shield in 2019, but he also picked up several individual honors. His resume includes MLS MVP Award in 2019, and two MLS Best XI nods.

LAFC decided to make a significant investment in their roster after a disappointing 2021 MLS season that saw them missing the playoffs for the first time in the club’s history. According to multiple reports, LAFC is finalizing a deal to acquire United States international midfielder Kellyn Acosta from the Colorado Rapids.

MLS Soccer’s Tom Bogert reports that the deal could end up being worth around $1.5 million in General Allocation Money (GAM). The Rapids will get $1.1 million right away, while the remaining 400K are based on incentives. The Colorado club will also get a percentage if LAFC decides to sell Acosta at some point.

Acosta is coming off a solid year in which he helped the Rapids finish at the top of the Western Conference. While he only managed one goal and two assists, he provided crucial in other departments and provided the team with a safety blanket thanks to its versatility. The 26-year-old was also irreplaceable for the United States Men’s National Team, making 21 appearances in 2021.

Reportedly, Colorado Rapids were not keen on letting Kellyn Acosta go but felt this was the best business decision after the two sides failed to reach an extension agreement despite lengthy talks. Acosta’s current deal includes club options for 2022 and 2023, and he is set to become a free agent in the January of 2024.

The ball is now in LAFC’s court, and the Los Angeles team will probably look to protect their investment and tie Acosta on a long-term deal sooner than later..

LAFC’s first big move this offseason is centered on boosting their attack. The club acquired USMNT forward Corey Baird in a trade with Real Salt Lake, announcing the move on Monday.

According to the LAFC official website, Baird arrives in exchange for $500,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM). The GAM will be spread across 2021 and 2022, while RSL is also set to receive an international roster slot this year and future considerations.

Baird played 22 games for Real Salt Lake in 2020 and started 17 times. He finished the MLS regular season with two goals and three assists to his name.

According to LAFC general manager John Thorrington, the team wanted Baird for his dynamic style of play and relentless energy.

“We are confident he will prove to be a great fit into how we play and will help us achieve our ambitions as a Club in the years to come,” Thorrington added.

Baird is a versatile player, which opens up many options for LAFC head coach Bob Bradley. The 24-year-old player will compete with Danny Musovski for the starting spot as a central forward while also being able to fill in for stars Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi on the wing.

Corey Baird spent his early career in development leagues before signing with Real Salt Lake as a Homegrown Player in 2018 and winning the MLS Rookie of the Year award in the same year. He played a total of 87 games for them, including the playoffs, scoring 15 goals and dishing 14 assists.

Baird made his USMNT debut in 2019 and has four appearances in international games so far.
