]]>Two starters went down for the Cowboys in their Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and tight end Blake Jarwin.
Vander Esch suffered a fractured collarbone and might make it back by the end of the season, even though he’s still expected to miss a significant amount of time.
Jarwin wasn’t as lucky. It appears that the fourth-year tight end has a torn ACL and will likely miss the entire season.
Vander Esch is an All-Pro and the leader of the Dallas defense, who plays a big part in communication and getting everyone on the same page as the starting middle linebacker. Worst of all for Vander Esch, he just got healthy from a neck injury that had him miss seven games in 2019.
Dallas thought that they had found the successor to star tight end Jason Witten, but they will have to wait another year to see if Jarwin is going to be the solution as their new No. 1 tight end.
Very thin at the tight end position, Dallas might look outside of the organization to find a replacement for Jarwin, who figured to a crucial part of the offseason this season.

]]>Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Vander Esch said that he is now fully recovered and that the injury is behind him. “I feel amazing. That’s all behind me. I’m not worried about my neck anymore,” he said.
The neck issues limited Vander Esch to just nine games in 2019. Still, he managed to tally 72 tackles, 0.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble.
Without Leighton Vander Esch, Cowboy’s defense crumbled late in the season, and the team ended up missing the playoffs after series of losses. Now that he’s back, Cowboys should be more stable and efficient in stopping the opponents and give a chance to their offense to win more games.
However, Vander Esch knows the predictions mean nothing without execution.
“This year, we’ve got to stop talking about it and go do it. It’s as simple as that,” he added.

]]>Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett spoke with reporters on Friday about Vander Esch, saying that the 23-year-old Pro Bowler will miss Week 12 games against New England Patriots and might not return on the field this season. Still, according to Garrett, the injury isn’t “career-threatening.”
“Leighton was having some symptoms yesterday, so we had him checked out. It was determined that he has an issue in his neck,” said Garrett. “He’s not gonna be available for this week’s game. We don’t think it’s career-threatening.”
Vander Esch initially suffered a stinger in Week 8 win against Philadelphia Eagles but ended up missing just one Cowboys’ game before returning to the starting lineup in the last two weeks. However, his condition worsened after a flare-up on practice this week, and the MRI ended up showing that the injury was more serious than it was originally thought.
Leighton Vander Esch had an impressive rookie season last year, earning a Pro Bowl appearance and Second-Team All-Pro honors. Vander Esch’s sophomore season was also on a good track as he currently has second-most tackles on the Cowboys team with 87. He also added 0.5 sacks, forced fumble and three pass deflections in 2019.
