Koeman referenced a tight schedule in the COVID-19 altered season as he explained Messi’s absence: “We are already qualified and this way I am able to give opportunities to others. We need to win Saturday’s match in La Liga, so this is the right time for him to rest. After tomorrow there won’t be any other chances to do that.”
Messi is expected to start on Sunday as Barcelona travels to face Cadiz in an important La Liga matchup.

The Argentine superstar was forced out of Barcelona’s win at halftime after experiencing discomfort in his left inner thigh. Trainers and team doctors were seen massaging and attempting to treat the thigh in order to keep Messi in the game, but he was replaced by Ousmane Dembele after the break.
It’s a disappointing bit of news for Barcelona, as Messi is their most important player and had already missed the first four games of the season with a foot injury.
While the club hasn’t provided specifics about the severity of the adductor sprain, it doesn’t appear to be an overly serious injury. The dynamic forward is expected to miss Barcelona’s weekend league clash against Getafe, but his availability is unknown for next Wednesday’s Champions League game against Inter Milan.

The forward strained his right calf during his first day back on the field on Monday and did not take the evening flight with the team from Barcelona to Miami. Barcelona will have to pay financially for Messi’s injury, as the forward was contractually obligated to play in the US matches.
Barcelona will take on Napoli twice on American soil as part of the International Champions Cup. Their first game against the Italian side will be on Wednesday night at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and then the two clubs will travel north to Ann Arbor, Michigan for a Saturday clash at Michigan Stadium.
Messi, however, will stay behind in Spain and attempt to rehab his calf strain. It’s still unknown whether or not La Liga’s three-time reigning top goal scorer will be ready for Barcelona’s first La Liga match on August 17 against Athletic Club.

Messi scored two goals and provided an assist in Barcelona’s victory over Liverpool. The Argentinian forward had one of the most brilliant performances of his career, bringing the Camp Nou to its feet on several occasions.
Barcelona’s first goal came in only the 15th minute of the game, when Messi threaded a picture-perfect pass into the box to Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan striker buried the shot past Alisson Becker to open the scoring.
Messi’s magic came on full display in the second half. He scored a tap-in goal after Suárez hit the crossbar in the 75th minute, and then the goal of the night, and possibly the season, happened.
The Argentinian scored a brilliant free-kick goal that was perfectly slotted into the top corner of the net to give Barça a 3-0 lead that wouldn’t change until the final whistle blew.

Barcelona, knowing that they had the first leg of their Champions League semifinal matchup against Liverpool looming on Wednesday, started with a conservative lineup against 15th-place Levante at the Camp Nou. Leo Messi started the game on the bench, as did other stars such as Sergio Busquets.
After going to the dressing rooms tied 0-0 at halftime, Barça coach Ernesto Valverde decided to substitute on Lionel Messi, which changed everything.
