In an exclusive interview with ESPN FC on Thursday, FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed that he wants to keep Lionel Messi at the club “forever.”

The Argentinian superstar’s current contract with the club runs out in summer of 2021.

Messi, who will turn 32 years old this June, has become the most emblematic player in the history of the Catalonian club.

The forward made his debut with FC Barcelona in 2004 at the age of 17. Since then, his rise to becoming possibly the greatest player in the history of the sport has been astronomical.

Messi has won La Liga with Barcelona 9 times, and has collected 4 Champions League trophies. In addition, he has 6 Copa del Rey titles and 7 Supercopa of Spain trophies.

While Messi has played with some great players in his tenure with the club, he has always been the club’s star. He’s been awarded with the Ballon d’Or five times as the sport’s top player.

While he is getting a little bit older, Messi shows no signs of slowing down. He is actually in the midst of one of his best seasons with Barcelona. He’s scored 42 goals in only 39 games this season.

It’s clear that Bartomeu’s desire is that Messi never leaves to go to another club.
