The Los Angeles Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach. The franchise officially confirmed the news on Wednesday night.

Harbaugh arrives in LA after serving as the head coach of Michigan Wolverines for the past nine years. The Wolverines won the CFP National Championship during the 2023 college season.

The move marks Harbaugh’s return to the Chargers organization after more than two decades. Harbaugh previously played for two years with the franchise as a quarterback, starting 17 games combined in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. He went 6-11 during that span, throwing for 4,177 yards, 18 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

“Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward,” said Chargers’ owner Dean Spanos in a statement. “The son of a coach, brother of a coach and father of a coach who himself was coached by names like Schembechler and Ditka, for the past two decades Jim has led hundreds of men to success everywhere he’s been — as their coach. And today, Jim Harbaugh returns to the Chargers, this time as our coach. Who has it better than us?”

The Chargers are hoping that Harbaugh can change their fortunes after years of disappointment. They have one of the most talented teams in the league, fronted by star quarterback Justin Herbert, on paper, but have consistently failed to get the best out of it. This resulted in head coach Brandon Staley being fired at the end of the 2023 campaign, in which the team went 5-12 and missed the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five years.

Jim Harbaugh has been successful in all of his previous stops, including his first venture into NFL coaching with the San Francisco 49ers. Taking over a rebuilding 49ers’ team in 2011, Harbaugh had two NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl XLVII trip in his first three years in charge. He left the team after clashing with the ownership and front office after an 8-8 finish in 2014.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to meet with Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh on Monday, league sources confirmed to ESPN. While Harbaugh is being considered for the Chargers’ vacant head coach position, neither party is expected to make an imminent decision, with the Chargers set to interview several other candidates as well.

The Chargers’ search for a new head coach began on December 15, when Brandon Staley and General Manager Tom Telesco were fired following a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chargers ended the season 5-12 at the bottom of the AFC West.

Harbaugh has attained major success during his nine-year tenure as Michigan’s head coach. He lifted the Wolverines to another national title last Monday as the Wolverines defeated the Washinton Huskies 34-13 in the College Football Playoff National Championship. He holds a 144-52 college coaching record, winning three Big Ten Conference championships.

The Los Angeles Chargers ownership didn’t wait long to react after the team’s embarrassing 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night. The franchise announced the following day that head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco were both relieved of their duties.

Besides Staley and Telesco, defensive run game coordinator/defensive line coach Jay Rodgers. Outside linebackers coach Giff Smith will coach the team on an interim basis, while director of player personnel JoJo Wooden will act as interim GM.

Staley and Telesco leave the Chargers at the bottom of the AFC West and no real shot at the playoff spot with a 5-9 record.

“These decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly — especially when you consider the number of people they impact,” said Chargers owner Dean Spanos in a statement. “We are clearly not where we expect to be, however, and we need a new vision. Doing nothing in the name of continuity was not a risk I was willing to take.”

The Chargers hired Brandon Staley as the team’s head coach in 2021 after his impressive one-year stint as defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams. Staley led the Chargers to a 10-7 record and AFC Wild Card Game in 2022, but the team suffered a 30–31 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars after blowing a 27-0 lead.

Telesco, on the other hand, has been the general manager of the Chargers for the past 11 years. He was known for making some great draft decisions, including drafting superstar Justin Herbert in 2020, but many believed his roster construction left much to be desired.

The Los Angeles Chargers placed star quarterback Justin Herbert on Injured Reserve on Tuesday. The team also announced that Herbert is set to undergo finger surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Herbert hurt his finger in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-7 loss to the Denver Broncos. He will end his campaign with 3,134 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven picks.

Being placed on Injured Reserve means that Herbert’s streak of 62 starts in the NFL will come to an end. Only Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen had more consecutive starts at the QB position with 84.

“Certainly, there’s nothing more important than that, than his right hand. And his long-term future,” said Chargers’ head coach Brandon Staley said of Herbert. “He’s 25 years old, and he’s got a really, really bright future in front of him. So, like I said, every decision we make is going to be with that in mind.”

It makes sense for the Chargers to shut down Herbert considering their playoff chances are slim-to-none. The LA team has a 5-8 record and even winning out their remaining four games wouldn’t guarantee a spot in the postseason.

With Herbert out, the Chargers will turn to backup Easton Stick. The former fifth-round pick replaced Herbert in the Broncos game and completed 13 out of 24 pass attempts while throwing for 179 yards.

The Los Angeles Chargers have been dealt a tough blow in their attempts to turn around their disappointing season. According to the team’s head coach, Brandon Staley, Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa will likely be placed on Injured Reserve with a foot sprain.

Bosa will miss at least four weeks if he ends up on IR, but there is a chance he won’t return at all by the end of the season. When asked about it, Staley said that it is “to be determined” whether Bosa plays again in 2023.

Bosa’s injury came in the first quarter of a 23-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The 28-year-old found himself in the pile of players during the Packers’ run attempt and was seen limping after the play ended. He was later carted off to the locker room and didn’t return.

Joey Bosa was one of the rare positives for a struggling Chargers’ defense this season. Despite dealing with various minor injuries earlier in the season, Bosa managed to rack up 20 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

When he is healthy, Bosa is one of the best defenders in the league. The issue is that he hasn’t managed to stay like that consistently since entering the league in 2016. Due to a combination of hamstring, groin, and muscle injuries, he only played 16 games in three out of seven seasons as a pro. After the latest setback, it will be three full seasons in eight years.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is recovering well from his left shoulder setback, the player himself revealed. This confirms a report from ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry that Herbert is hopeful to begin throwing again “in the next couple of weeks” as he continues his recovery process.

When questioned on Thursday, Herbert revealed that he believes that he is now “getting closer to 75 percent” recovered after undergoing surgery in January on his non-throwing left shoulder to repair a torn labrum.

“It’s a pretty long process,” Herbert remarked at the Chargers’ draft party. “Kind of expecting it to be a five- or six-month recovery and being on the lead shoulder, it’s kind of tough throwing and golfing and doing all those things that are kind of explosive movements.”

Herbert’s update was not the only major news concerning the Chargers on Thursday. The team selected TCU wideout Quentin Johnston as their first-round pick on Thursday night. Selected 21st overall, Johnston expressed his joy at joining the Chargers and his excitement to play alongside Herbert.

The Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler may resort to remaining with the Chargers for another season as he struggles to find a new team that will commit to him beyond a single season.

Upon requesting a trade three weeks ago, Ekeler has been searching for a new team yet has been unable to find a suitable destination.

“When it comes down to what’s going on with the whole trade and all that stuff, really, look, we’re trying to find a long-term partner,” Ekeler stated during an interview on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio. “That’s what we want. We want someone who wants to sign us for a few years and sees us not just in the immediate future, but a couple of years out.”

Ekeler added that once his career with the Chargers hit a slump, he began his search for a new team in order to advance his career.

He insisted that he does not hold any ill feelings towards the Chargers organization, however, and that he would be willing to stay at the Chargers another year if need be, becoming a free agent afterward.

The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly in danger of losing one of their best offensive weapons after running back Austin Ekeler approached the team with a trade request.

Ekeler wants out after the talks about his extension didn’t progress past the preliminary phase. The 27-year-old is set to enter the final year of the four-year, $24.5 million deal that is set to pay him a base salary of $6.25 million in 2023.

It is unclear whether Ekeler is really interested in leaving the franchise that signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017 or is just seeking additional leverage in contract talks. He has been one of the most productive backs in the league in the past several seasons and rightfully feels that his contract doesn’t reflect that.

After missing time with an injury in 2020, Ekeler played all 33 games in the following two seasons. He rushed for 1,826 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2021 and 2022 while also adding 177 catches for 1,369 receiving yards and 13 TDs. He became just the fourth player in NFL history to have back-to-back seasons with at least 15 touchdowns from scrimmage while setting the Chargers’ franchise record for most catches by a running back in 2022 with 107 receptions.

While the Chargers could get handsome compensation for Ekeler if they trade him, it would also leave them with a huge hole in their offense that would be hard to fill. It now all comes down to whether the franchise believes keeping Ekeler around for a hefty fee gets them closer to their goal of competing for a Super Bowl.

The Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill is set to leave the team to join the Miami Dolphins. There, he will reunite with fellow defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio confirmed Hill’s appointment on Monday, however, his role in the team remains unspecified.

“First and foremost, Renaldo’s a good coach,” Fangio stated during his public address. “Really, a talented coach with a bright future in the NFL. He worked with us for two years in Denver, so his familiarity with me and the system and what we do was important to me. But regardless of that, just his ability to be a great coach is what attracted me to him.”

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley allowed Hill to leave for the Dolphins out of respect for both Hill and Fangio. Staley served as an assistant under Fangio from 2017 until 2019, coaching at both the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Hill played 10 seasons in the NFL as a defensive back. Having played for the Dolphins from 2006 to 2008, Hill became Miami’s assistant defensive backs coach in 2018.

The Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams will be out for two to three weeks after suffering a small, nonsurgical fracture in his back, sources reported on Friday. This could bring an end to Williams’ season should the Chargers not progress in the playoffs.

After being injured in the Chargers’ regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos, Williams has undergone an X-ray and an MRI scan, both of which produced negative results. After experiencing a lack of progress over the coming days, Williams underwent an additional MRI, whereupon he received a fracture diagnosis.

Williams has a history of back issues, having missed the first five games of his rookie season in 2017 due to a back injury.

Facing criticism, Chargers coach Brandon Staley defended his decision to play his starters against the Broncos, explaining, “It’s difficult to decide who plays and who doesn’t and who is more valuable than the rest. What you are trying to do is set a standard for your program about how you do things. That is what I believe in, and I didn’t want anybody to get hurt in [the game], regardless of their status, because everybody is important.”
