Djokovic took advantage of his lack of fatigue in a hot afternoon in Spain to beat Tsitsipas, who appeared to be wary and out of gas after a semi-final victory over Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic, the undisputed best men’s singles player on Earth at the moment, took the title in straight sets. He vanquished his Greek opponent by a 6-3, 6-4 final line.

The Serbian’s win gives him a comfortable lead in the standings of the ATP World Tour.

Djokovic spoke after the final about how the win was important for his confidence. Despite his status as the world’s best player, Djokovic had entered into a mini-slump after winning the Australian Open. He didn’t advance past the quarter-finals of any of the three events in which he participated after that victory.

The win was the 74th of Djokovic’s career on the ATP Tour. He left no doubt as to who the best player in the Madrid Open was, and took home the title as the reward for a solid performance.
