Former NBA All-Star Marc Gasol announced his retirement from basketball on Wednesday. Gasol played 14 years in the NBA, suiting up for the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Gasol last played in the NBA during the 2020-21 campaign before returning to native Spain. He then spent two seasons playing for Bàsquet Girona, a club he founded. The 39-year-old averaged 10.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game for Girona in 2022-23.

Gasol made his NBA debut with the Grizzlies in 2008. He spent more than 10 seasons in Memphis, earning three All-Star nods and being named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. He was also part of the team that made the Western Conference Finals during the 2012–13 campaign.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Grizzlies plan to retire Gasol’s No. 33 jersey.

Gasol left the Grizzlies midway through the 2018–19 season, joining the Raptors and becoming part of the team that won the 2019 NBA title. He spent his last season in the NBA with the Lakers. During his NBA career, Gasol averaged 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game.

Gasol was also successful with Spain’s national team, winning two FIBA World Cups, two Eurobaskets, and two silver medals at the Olympics.

Scotty Pippen Jr. has agreed to a two-year, two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, his agent, Erika Ruiz of Klutch Sports Group confirmed. The free agent averaged 18.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.8 steals this season with the NBA G League’s South Bay Lakers.

The son of Chicago Bulls legend and Hall of Famer Scotty Pippen, the 23-year-old played in six games for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022-23 season. He was undrafted out of Vanderbilt in 2022. He was second in the SEC in scoring in his sophomore year, averaging 20.8 points, before ending the following season as the top scorer, averaging 20.4 points.

While the Grizzlies are providing Pippen with a platform to launch his NBA career, the guard is providing Memphis with much-needed relief amid an injury crisis. Ja Morant has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery, while Marcus Smart (finger) and Desmond Bane (ankle) will remain sidelined for at least another month.

Vince Williams Jr. has agreed to a three-year, $7.9 million guaranteed contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, ESPN confirmed on Wednesday. The deal includes a team option for a fourth year. The Grizzlies decided to waive center Bismack Biyombo in order to create room in their roster for the guard/forward.

Biyombo performed well for the Grizzlies in Steven Adams’ absence, averaging 5.2 points and 6.4 rebounds in his 30 games, however, the Grizzlies needed to make a difficult call in order to provide room for Williams, who has evolved into a top-drawer wing defender. Still, Memphis has hinted that Biyombo may return during the course of the season.

Averaging 5.9 points and 5.1 rebounds, Williams will receive the most guaranteed money for a player who had been on a two-way contract. Currently 13th in the Western Conference standings, the Grizzlies will be hoping that Williams could boost the team over the remainder of the season.

The Memphis Grizzlies have had enough of Dillon Brooks’ antics. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the organization informed Brooks that he wouldn’t be offered a new contract after he becomes a free agent this summer.

Charania reports that Brooks found out that “he will not be brought back under any circumstances” during recent exit meetings with team officials.

Brooks grabbed the headlines more than a few times this season, and it wasn’t because of his stellar performances. Instead, he drew attention to himself during the regular season by getting involved in several incidents, including hitting Cleveland Cavaliers’ star Donovan Mitchell in the groin and getting into verbal exchanges with players like Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green.

Brooks continued with his antics in the postseason, taking aim at Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James and calling him “old.” He also hit James in the groin area during Game 3 of the first-round series between the Lakers and Grizzlies, with the incident causing him to be ejected from the contest.

It’s obvious that the Grizzlies didn’t like the negative attention Brooks drew to the franchise, but their decision to let him walk isn’t solely based on that. The 27-year-old player struggled on offense throughout the 2022-23 campaign, shooting 39.6% from the floor and averaging 14.3 points in the regular season, his lowest since his sophomore year in the league. He was even worse in the postseason, putting up 10.5 points on 31.2% shooting.

Despite all the baggage that he brings in, Brooks should command some interest from other teams around the league. He remains an elite defender and could perhaps be a valuable contributor if he lands in the right situation.

The Memphis Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks earned himself a premature exit from his team’s 111-101 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night. This is Brooks’ third ejection this season, putting him level with Boston Celtics’ Marcus Smart and the Sacramento Kings’ Malik Monk for the most ejections in 2022-23.

Brooks was called for a flagrant foul 2 only 17 seconds into the third quarter when he swiped his left hand into LeBron James’ groin area. “I ain’t talking,” Brooks told reporters following his team’s loss.

This is the second postseason ejection that Brooks has incurred in his career; the first being during Game 2 of last season’s Western Conference semifinals when he injured Golden State’s Gary Payton II.

When asked about what disciplinary action he believes should be taken against Brooks, LeBron James simply stated that he has no say on the matter as he is not a part of the decision-making committee.

By losing to the Lakers on Saturday night, the Grizzlies now find themselves trailing 2-1 to the Lakers in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.

The Memphis Grizzlies fought their way back from 29 points down in the third quarter to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 126-120 in overtime on Friday night. This is the largest comeback victory in the NBA season to date.

“We came in at halftime, regrouped, talked about it,” Jaren Jackson Jr., who scored 28 points on the night, explained. “Just came out firing [in the second half]. You chip away long enough, you’re going to make some noise.”

Joining Jackson in lifting the Grizzlies to victory was Desmond Bane, who scored 21 points as well as eight in overtime, and Tyus Jones, who grabbed his first career triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

In addition to their third-quarter deficit, the Grizzlies were also down by nine points in the final minute of the fourth quarter, scoring nine points to send the game into overtime.

Exceeding the 28-point comeback by the Brooklyn Nets against the Boston Celtics on March 3, this is also the largest comeback in Grizzlies’ franchise history.

Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard Desmond Bane has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 toe sprain, the team announced on Tuesday. As a result, he has been sidelined from action and is expected to be reevaluated in two to three weeks.

Bane suffered the injury during the Grizzlies’ 103-114 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night and was consequently unable to appear in the team’s 92-102 loss to the Washington Wizards on Sunday night.

Currently in his third year with the team, Bane has delivered a stellar performance on the court this season, averaging career-high figures of 24.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. Averaging 3.8 three-pointers per game, Bane ranked fifth in the NBA for three-point shooters. He has also achieved a career-best of 45.1% of his long-range attempts.

The shooting guard’s injury comes at an inopportune time for the Grizzlies, particularly since power forward/center Jaren Jackson Jr. is set to make his debut for Memphis. The player’s late-season debut comes after he took several months to recover from surgery to repair a fracture to his right foot suffered this summer.

After signing center DeAndre Jordan, the Los Angeles Lakers decided to move on from veteran Marc Gasol. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Gasol is headed via trade to the Memphis Grizzlies, who plan to waive the 36-year-old Spaniard.

The trade will see the Lakers sending Gasol, a second-rounder in 2024, and cash to the Grizzlies, while receiving the draft rights to Fujian Sturgeons’ Wang Zhelin in return.

Gasol, who went through virtually the same trade at the start of his NBA career before becoming a legend in Memphis, won’t suit up for the franchise. Instead, Wojnarowski reports that the Grizzlies will release the player to “allow him to remain in Spain with his family.”

By getting rid of Gasol and his $2.7 million contract, the Lakers will save themselves $10 million combined in salary and luxury tax.

Marc Gasol was the Lakers’ second-round pick in 2007. He didn’t get a chance to start his NBA career in Los Angeles, as the franchise traded him in 2008 as part of the trade that landed them Gasol’s older brother Pau.

Gasol went on to spend 11 years in Memphis, earning three All-Star nods in a Grizzlies jersey and winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2013. Grizzlies traded him in early 2019 to the Toronto Raptors, where he won his first and only NBA title in the same season.

Gasol signed a two-year deal as a free agent with the Lakers ahead of the 2020-21 NBA season. In 52 games in LA, he averaged 5.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

One of the NBA’s most impressive young stars, Ja Morant, left Monday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets with an ankle injury.

According to the Memphis Grizzlies, their star point guard has a sprained ankle. X-rays were performed on Morant’s ankle that didn’t show any fractures, but the team will perform an MRI on Tuesday to better understand the severity of the injury.

The 21-year-old sophomore was selected second overall by the Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft and has immediately become a star in the league. Over the first two games of this season, Morant averaged a startling 36 points and eight assists.

He finished last season with an average of 17.8 points, 7.3 assists, and 3.9 rebounds on his way to being named Rookie of the Year.

Morant was able to take the Grizzlies—a team that most experts originally thought would have one of the worst records in the league last year—to the brink of qualifying for a playoff spot in 2020.

Memphis has high expectations and would like to reach the playoffs in 2021, but they won’t be able to do it without a healthy Morant leading the team. Understandably, this is why the Grizzlies will hope that his ankle injury is not a serious one.

The Memphis Grizzlies have one of the most exciting young cores in the NBA, and they are determined to keep it for years to come. The team announced on Wednesday that they have exercised contract options on reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Ja Morant as well as Jaren Jackson Jr., Brandon Clarke, and Grayson Allen.

All four players are now under contract with the Grizzlies throughout the 2021-22 NBA season.

Although Memphis didn’t need to make the decision on their contracts right away, the team made the move to signal their commitment to Morant, Jackson Jr., Clarke, and Allen as the future of the franchise.

This young group, alongside several veterans, was one of the most positive surprises in the 2019-20 NBA season. Despite being projected to finish the season with one of the records in the league, the Grizzlies ended up boosting a respectable 34-39 record.

Memphis also held the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference for the better part of the year but fell short of the playoffs after losing the play-in elimination game to Portland Trail Blazers.

Ja Morant, the Grizzlies No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, was the main reason for the Grizzlies’ success as he led the team with 17.8 points per game while adding 3.9 rebounds and 7.3 assists on average. Jaren Jackson Jr. followed with 17.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest.

Brandon Clarke and Grayson Allen also had important roles, coming from the bench and contributing with 12.1 and 8.7 points per game, respectively.
