Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans isn’t going anywhere. Despite rumors surrounding his future with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Evans agreed to a new two-year deal with the franchise.

Evans was set to become a free agent this offseason after he and the Bucs failed to come to terms on an extension last year. There were reports that Evans is ready to test the free agency for the first time in his career, with a number of teams expecting to be in the mix for his services.

Now, Evans gets to continue his career with the Tampa Bay and possibly be “Buc for life.” His contract is reportedly worth $52 million and includes $35 million in guaranteed money.

Evans had one of his best years as a pro in 2023, playing in all 17 games and catching 79 passes for 1,255 yards and NFL-leading 13 touchdowns. He earned his fifth Pro Bowl nod and later added 11 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs.

With Evans set to return, the Buccaneers can now focus on other pressing needs. Probably the biggest focus now will be taking care of the quarterback position. Last year’s starter, Baker Mayfield, is set to hit the free agency, but there is strong interest from both sides to reunite for the 2024 campaign and beyond.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers intend to make another run at the Super Bowl. With this in mind, the franchise approached Pro Bowl wideout Mike Evans with a contract restructure offer.

According to multiple reports, the Bucs hope that Evans will rework his deal and help the team to get some badly-need cap space. The Buccaneers currently have only around $270K in cap space.

The Athletic’s Greg Auman reports that Evans already accepted the restructure and will have part of his $12.25 million salary converted to a signing bonus. This will significantly lower the 28-year-old player’s $16.637 million cap hit, which is the highest on the entire roster, and could open close to $9 million in cap space for Tampa Bay.

Evans has three more years left on the five-year, $82.5 million contract extension he inked with Tampa back in 2017.

The extra money that the Buccaneers get from restructuring Evans’ deal will most likely be used for in-season spending. This could include acquiring replacements for injured players or signing impact players released by other teams at some point in the season.

Mike Evans entered the league as the Buccaneers’ No. 7 pick in 2014 and has been the focal point of the team’s offense ever since. In each of his seasons as a pro, he managed 1,000+ yards while also totaling 532 receptions and 61 touchdowns. Evans has three Pro Bowl nods and one Second-team All-pro selection.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently enjoying the aftermath of a memorable Super Bowl LV win on Sunday. However, once the partying is over, the team will face a challenge to keep the winning team together.

Several of the Bucs’ notable players, including tight end Rob Gronkowski, linebacker Shaq Barrett, and wideout Chris Godwin, are set to become free agents and will likely want to cash in on their recent success. On the other hand, the salary cap will go down in 2021, and paying everybody will be tough to pull out.

But according to Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians, the team might get unexpected help in this situation.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Arians revealed that Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans already offered to give up some of his own money if that would help to keep the team together.

“Mike Evans is the most unselfish superstar I’ve ever met,” said Arians. “He’s told us to use some of his money if we need to contracts to keep the team together.”

The way Evans could help out the Bucs with salary cap concerns would be by restructuring his contract.

He is currently in line to get $12.5 million this year, while his cap hit will be $16.6 million. If two sides restructure, the 27-year-old star would probably get the same amount of money, but part of it would be turned into a signing bonus.

There is also an option for Evans to sign a new deal with a lower salary, but this scenario isn’t highly likely.

Evans finished the 2020 regular season with 70 receptions for 1,006 yards and 13 touchdowns. With these stats, he became the first wideout in the history of the league to have 1,000+ yards in each of his first seven seasons in the NFL.

The final game of the 2020 NFL regular season was a rollercoaster for Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Mike Evans.

In a 44-27 win over Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Evans became the first wide receiver to have 1,000+ receiving yards in each of his first seven seasons in the NFL. But the 27-year-old Pro Bowler also suffered a knee injury that might rob him of his first playoff appearance in his career.

Evans got hurt in the first quarter of the game while trying to catch a pass in the endzone. While cutting inside, he suddenly stopped to make the play, causing his foot to slide and his knee to bend awkwardly.

Evans immediately fell on the ground, holding his knee, and needed to be helped in order to leave the field. He didn’t return to the game.

Reportedly, Evans underwent an MRI on Sunday night, and the test showed no structural damage. However, Tampa Bay is still unsure whether he’ll be able to play in the opening playoff game against Washington on Saturday—but they remain hopeful.

“It meant the world for him to get that record and then to have an easy touchdown—the turf was really slick in the end zones, and it was just a freaky thing,” said Tampa head coach Bruce Arians after the game. “Knock on wood, we don’t think there’s any serious damage. We’ll know more in the next 24 hours.”

Evans is the Buccaneers’ leading wide receiver this season. He caught 70 passes for 1,006 receiving yards while also having a career-high 13 TD catches.
