Minnesota Wild announced on Thursday that the team’s captain, Jared Spurgeon, will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 NHL season. Spurgeon is dealing with a hip surgery that will require him to undergo surgery.

Spurgeon is expected to recover in time for the training camp ahead of the next season, according to the team statement.

Spurgeon has been frequently sidelined this season while also dealing with a shoulder injury. The 34-year-old defenseman will end his campaign with 16 games and five points.

The Wild placed Spurgeon on a long-term injury reserve, which means that his $7.575 million salary won’t count against their salary cap anymore. This will allow the team to bring in one or two players who can make an immediate impact and improve their depth on the blue line.

The Wild is in the midst of a disappointing season that sees them sitting 7th in the Central Division with an 18-20-5 record. They have particularly struggled without Spurgeon, losing five out of seven games since the 34-year-old went down.

Jared Spurgeon spent all of his 14 years in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild. In 867 games with the franchise, Spurgeon scored 110 goals and added 274 assists for a total of 384 points.

The Minnesota Wild made a significant change in attempts to turn around their disappointing start of the 2023-24 NHL season. The team fired head coach Dean Evason and replaced him with former Nashville Predators coach John Hynes.

The Wild are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak and have a 5-10-4 record. General manager Bill Guerin viewed this unacceptable for a team that made the playoffs in all of the past four seasons and decided it was time to let Evason go. Assistant coach Bob Woods was also relieved of his duties.

Evason joined the Wild as an assistant in 2018. He took over as interim head coach during the 2019–20 season before being given the job on a full-time basis. His head coaching record with the Wild is 147-77-27 in the regular season and 8-15 in the playoffs.

“Dean did an excellent job during his tenure with the Minnesota Wild, especially as head coach of our team,” Wild general manager Bill Guerin said. “I am very thankful for his hard work and dedication to our organization.”

The Wild hopes that Hynes can provide a positive shock for the underperforming team and get them back in the playoff hunt. The 48-year-old coach was without a job after being fired by the Predators at the end of the last season. He has a coaching record of 284-255-63 with the Predators and the New Jersey Devils.

Zach Parise and Ryan Suter joined the Minnesota Wild together in 2012 and are now leaving the franchise together nine years later. The organization announced on Tuesday that Parise and Suter were bought out of their contracts and have thus ended their run with the team.

“I want to thank Zach and Ryan for everything they did for our organization over the past nine seasons, both on and off the ice,” said team owner Craig Leipold in a statement. “They were tremendous ambassadors for our team and helped us win a lot of games. I wish them nothing but the best going forward.”

Parise and Suter both had four years left on matching 13-year, $98 million contracts. According to ESPN, both players still want to play and will hit the free agency market.

The Wild, on the other hand, are looking to reshape their team and will use the created cap space to extend their young stars Kirill Kaprizov and Kevin Fiala. The move also gives the team two additional protected spaces ahead of the upcoming expansion draft, considering that Parise and Suter couldn’t be moved due to clauses in their contracts.

Since joining the Wild, Parise and Suter helped the franchise to establish itself as a perennial Stanley Cup playoffs participant. In nine years of the duo’s stay in Minnesota, the Wild only missed the postseason once. Still, they never managed to make a deep run, failing to progress past the second round in eight attempts.

Parise played a total of 558 games with the Wild, scoring 199 goals and adding 201 assists for a total of 400 points.

Stutter contributed 369 points (55 goals and 314 assists) in 656 games. He also made three All-Star appearances and had one First All-Star Team selection while in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Wild have signed forward Marcus Foligno to a new deal and avoided the risk of losing him in free agency after the 2020-21 NHL season.

According to the team’s announcement, Foligno inked a three-year extension that will keep him in a Wild jersey through 2023-24. The 29-year-old player is set to earn $9.3 million over the course of the deal.

Foglio had a career-season in 2019-20, managing to score 11 goals while dishing 14 assists in just 59 regular-season games. He is also an important leader for the team both on ice and in the locker room, which is another reason why the Wild wants to keep him around as much as possible.

“He is a leader. He’s a big personality. He’s one of the guys who keeps our room loose,” said the team’s general manager Bill Guerin. “But he also has the ability to hold guys’ hands to the fire.”

On Foglio’s part, he wanted to stay with the Wild because he believes the team is trending in the right direction despite an early playoff exit last season.

“I believe that we are headed in that direction where we’re going to be a contending team,” said Foligno after signing the deal. “I’m excited about the players we have and just the group that we have.”

Marcus Foligno spent the early part of his career with the Buffalo Sabres, joining Minnesota in 2017 as part of the Marco Scandella trade. He has 565 career NHL games in which he scored 75 goals and dished 108 assists for a total of 183 points.

Mikko Koivu spent all of his 15 seasons in NHL with Minnesota Wild, but will have to suit up for another team if he wants to play next season. Wild’s general manager Bill Guerin announced late last week that Koivu’s time with the franchise has come to an end.

Koivu, who captained the team since 2009, saw his contract expire at the end of 2019/20, and Wild opted not to offer him an extension.

“His hard work, dedication, and team-first mentality will be extremely difficult to replace in our lineup,” Guerin told reporters. “Off the ice, Mikko’s impact in the State of Hockey was immeasurable as he went out of his way to make a positive impact on so many people in our community, including his charitable contributions to Children’s Minnesota.”

Minnesota drafted Mikko Koivu sixth overall in 2001, but he had to wait for his NHL debut until the 2005/06 season. Since then, he made a total of 1,028 NHL regular-season appearances, contributing with 205 goals and 504 assists for a total of 709 points.

Koivu will leave Wild as the franchise leader in games played, assists, points, and several other categories. He is also the only full-time captain that the franchise ever had, considering that before 2009 the team had a rotating captainship.

It remains to be seen whether Koivu played his last game in the NHL. The 37-year-old captain previously expressed his wish to extend his career, but there is always a possibility for him to return to native Finland where he had his pro beginnings.

Recently-named general manager Kevyn Adams has already started to make moves that will hopefully lead to better results for the Buffalo Sabres, who haven’t been to the playoff in nine years.

His first move was to bring in some real veteran leadership, making a trade that sends forward Marcus Johansson to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for center Eric Staal. Staal is a 17-year veteran that Adams knows well. They were teammates and won a Stanley Cup together with the Caroline Hurricanes in 2006.

The move will save some cap space for the Sabres as well, about $1.25 million. However, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Staal is six years older than Johansson and is probably nearing the end of his career. But it’s obvious that Adams is trying to change the culture in Buffalo and that he believes that Staal is the right veteran leader to help with that undertaking. Both players are in the final year of their contracts.

This is Adams’ first time as a general manager, moving up the ranks in Buffalo where he previously held the position of senior vice president of business administration.

The trade looks to be a smart one from the perspective of the Wild as well, a team that hasn’t made it past the second round of the playoffs since 2003 and needs an injection of talent.

The Wild’s new coach Dean Evason is very familiar with Johansson. Evason was an assistant coach in Washington, where Johansson started his career and played seven seasons.

Swedish defenseman Jonas Brodin will keep being a significant presence in Minnesota Wild’s back line for years to come. The team announced on Tuesday that Brodin inked a seven-year extension that will keep him with the organization through the 2027-28 NHL season.

Brodin, who was entering the final year of his deal, will earn $6 million annually. The overall of the deal is $42 million.

“It was important in a lot of different ways, most importantly because of who Jonas is and what he brings to our team, as a person, and as a player,” said Wild general manager Bill Guerin in a statement. “It was extremely important to get this done, and we’re extremely happy to have him locked in the long term.”

Jonas Brodin, Wild’s No. 10 pick in 2011, is a key piece of the team’s defensive unit and comes off a successful 2019/20 NHL season in which he had career-high 28 points ( two goals and 26 assists). He has a total of 30 goals and 116 assists for 146 points in 555 regular-season games.

“I’m really happy that it went by quick, so I can stop thinking about all this and look forward to next season,” said Brodin. “I’m really happy, super excited, and I love Minnesota. I love everything about it: fans, organization, teammates. It feels like home.”

With this move, the Wild showed that they are committed to maintaining a competitive team in hopes to finally have a playoff breakthrough. Minnesota made the postseason for the better part of the decade but failed to make a significant run with their best result being Conference Quarterfinals in 2012/13.
