Swedish defenseman Jonas Brodin will keep being a significant presence in Minnesota Wild’s back line for years to come. The team announced on Tuesday that Brodin inked a seven-year extension that will keep him with the organization through the 2027-28 NHL season.

Brodin, who was entering the final year of his deal, will earn $6 million annually. The overall of the deal is $42 million.

“It was important in a lot of different ways, most importantly because of who Jonas is and what he brings to our team, as a person, and as a player,” said Wild general manager Bill Guerin in a statement. “It was extremely important to get this done, and we’re extremely happy to have him locked in the long term.”

Jonas Brodin, Wild’s No. 10 pick in 2011, is a key piece of the team’s defensive unit and comes off a successful 2019/20 NHL season in which he had career-high 28 points ( two goals and 26 assists). He has a total of 30 goals and 116 assists for 146 points in 555 regular-season games.

“I’m really happy that it went by quick, so I can stop thinking about all this and look forward to next season,” said Brodin. “I’m really happy, super excited, and I love Minnesota. I love everything about it: fans, organization, teammates. It feels like home.”

With this move, the Wild showed that they are committed to maintaining a competitive team in hopes to finally have a playoff breakthrough. Minnesota made the postseason for the better part of the decade but failed to make a significant run with their best result being Conference Quarterfinals in 2012/13.
