Montreal Impact will get to have a talented center back Luis Binks on their roster for another year.

Impact announced on Wednesday that they have extended Binks’ loan stint from Seria A side Bologna for the 2021 MLS season in a move that should be beneficial for both sides. The club’s defense will keep its stability while the 19-year-old player gets to gather more experience before heading to Europe.

The team confirmed the deal on social media.

Luis Binks started his soccer journey with Tottenham Hotspur, joining the club’s youth academy as a six-year-old child. Binks went on to spent almost 13 years with the organization, but never managed to get an opportunity with the first team.

Binks signed his first professional contract with Montreal Impact back in February and immediately took command of the team’s defense. This enabled him to get the attention of European scouts, with Bologna being the fastest and securing his signature after he just played eight games as a pro.

Binks already has 20 starts with Montreal in MLS, while he also made two appearances in the CONCACAF Champions League.

“Despite his young age and his little experience at the professional level, Luis played an excellent first season with us, which got him a transfer to Bologna,” said Impact’s sporting director Olivier Renard. “He showed what he can bring to this group and we are happy to know he will keep progressing in our club for another year.”

Montreal Impact made an important addition to their squad as they are trying to keep their playoff hopes in 2020 alive. The team announced on Thursday that they have completed a trade with Minnesota United that landed them striker Mason Toye.

In order to acquire Toye, Impact gave up $600,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) as well as 2021 MLS SuperDraft second-round pick.

Despite his obvious talent, Minnesota didn’t mind giving up Toye, considering he has fallen down the pecking order following the addition of Kei Kamara. The 21-year-old American was the team’s third option up front at best, so The Loons preferred to cash in on him sooner than later.

Impact, on the other hand, welcomed a signing that is expected to provide a boost for Impact’s already prolific attack, which scored 20 goals in 14 games this season.

“We are happy with the acquisition of Mason, who fits the profile we wanted, meaning a striker who can score and who has already demonstrated what he’s capable of in this league,” said Montreal’s sporting director Olivier Renard. “This addition is also in line with our sporting philosophy of having young players with high potential in the squad.”

Mason Toye made his professional debut with Minnesota in 2018 and has since played 42 games with 17 starts. He’s seven goals and four assists so far.

Toye represents the United States on the international level and was part of the United States U23 squad most recently.

Philadelphia Union enjoyed a resounding 4-1 win over a ten-man Montreal Impact at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Monday night.

Currently, in second place in the Eastern Conference standings, this victory sees Union remain hot on the trail of conference leaders Columbus Crew, with only three points separating the two sides. Union is also two points clear of third-placed Orlando City and former conference leaders Toronto FC.

Monday’s game got off to an exciting start, with Romell Quioto expertly curving in a free-kick to hand Montreal the lead within five minutes of play. What followed was a shift in the flow of play, where Philadelphia started to emerge as the dominant side.

On the 15 minute mark, Quioto received a red card for elbowing Mark McKenzie while jockeying for possession, thus overshadowing the excellence of his prior goal and bringing his night to an early end.

Not long after, Philadelphia drew level with the Canadian side courtesy of Alejandro Bedoya’s close-range belter. On the stroke of half time, striker Kacper Przybyłko put Union in the lead with a well-timed header.

Two minutes after the restart and Przybyłko scored his second goal of the evening—a short range tap-in into a goalkeeper-less net.

Anthony Fontana wrapped up the scoring in the 65th minute, shooting from just outside the box to hand Philadelphia their fourth goal.

Sporting Kansas City retained the number one spot on the Western Conference standings following the latest round of MLS games played on Monday.

The leaders out west faced the third-placed Western Conference side Minnesota United FC in what was a game of high stakes. Ultimately, Sporting emerged victorious, with Johnny Russell scoring the only goal of the game in the 80th minute.

In the Canadian leg of the competition, 5th placed Eastern Conference side Montreal Impact faced off with Vancouver Whitecaps, the team at the foot of the Western Conference table. Both sides received red cards as Montreal defeated the Whitecaps 4-2 in what was a fast-paced game.

Shifting back to the Western Conference, and playoff contenders LAFC faced off with their close rivals Portland Timbers. Ultimately, it was LAFC who would emerge as winners in a 4-2 thriller. This result allowed them to climb to fourth place in the Western Conference standings, with Portland sit in the sixth spot.

Finally, LA Galaxy made a trip to the San Jose Earthquakes. LA Galaxy, who were in fourth place in the Western Conference, were eager to make quick work of San Jose, who sit in second-last place. Unfortunately for Galaxy, they were held to a 1-1 draw, thereby affording LAFC the opportunity to leapfrog them on the standings.

The next round of MLS action takes place on Wednesday night.

Eastern Conference leaders Toronto FC failed to extend their lead at the top of the table following a narrow 1-0 defeat to fifth-placed Montreal Impact.

Toronto went into the clash in fine form, having defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 and 1-0 in back-to-back clashes in the Canadian leg of the MLS season. This made their defeat all the more unexpected. Montreal also went into the clash strong, however, as they had defeated Vancouver 2-0 just three days prior.

Toronto seemed to be the side in control for much of the match, with the exception of the 14th minute when Rudy Camacho found the back of the net for Montreal. Despite controlling 62% ball possession throughout the clash and taking a massive 20 shots, Toronto were unable to penetrate Montreal’s resolute defensive line.

This result puts Toronto in a precarious position. Having now played nine games, Toronto remain on 18 points. Trailing them by a single point is Columbus Crew, who still have a game in hand. This means that, should Columbus defeat Philadelphia Union in their clash on Thursday, they will snatch the top spot from Toronto.

Toronto FC’s next game will be on Sunday, when they face the Whitecaps yet again at the BC Place in Vancouver.
