Just a few weeks ago, it truly looked like Mookie Betts will have a season for the ages, but his luck quickly turned around. As injuries mount for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Betts is the latest player sent to the injured list with a cracked rib.

The Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Betts’ departure on Saturday, a day before he was officially moved to the injured list, with no returned day on the horizon.

“You’re taking one of the best players in baseball out of the lineup. It’s a big blow, but at least we know what we’re dealing with and we’re going to get him back sooner rather than later,” said Roberts.

Betts sustained the rib injury when he collided with Cody Bellinger in the first inning of the Dodger’s recent 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels last Wednesday. He continued playing the rest of the game and didn’t expect the injury to be serious, but it became clear he’s yet to recover after he missed two games of the Dodgers’ series against the Cleveland Guardians.

This is a significant loss for the Dodgers, especially after they lost starting pitchers Walker Buehler, Andrew Heaney, and Dustin May to injuries. According to Roberts, it’s still unclear if Betts is dealing with a hairline fracture or a larger break, and his return date is yet to be determined.

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ All-Star Mookie Betts is once again the most popular baseball player in the MLB. At least, in terms of jersey sales.

On Monday, one day after the regular 2021 MLB season wrapped up, the league shared the list of 20 players who had most of their jerseys sold through MLBShop.com since Opening Day. Betts claimed the top of the list with his No. 50 jersey, repeating the feat from 2020.

Three other Dodgers players cracked the top 10, including ace Clayton Kershaw at the fifth spot, first baseman Cody Bellinger at sixth, and shortstop Corey Seager at eighth.

The list saw Sand Diego Padres phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. claim the second spot and confirming his bid to become the new face of the league. All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves sold the third most jerseys in 2021 despite finishing his season in July.

The top 10 was rounded by Javier Baez, who split the season between the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, Aaron Judge (New York Yankees), Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels), and Nolan Arenado (St. Louis Cardinals).

The World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers announced that their star outfielder Cody Bellinger had to undergo surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder.

According to the team, Bellinger will need about 10 weeks to recover and he should be completely healthy before spring training starts.

Bellinger apparently injured himself while celebrating after hitting a home run in Game 7 of the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves. Despite the injury, Bellinger was able to continue playing and helped the Dodgers win their first World Series title since 1988.

The 25-year-old player hit 12 home runs in 56 games during the 2020 regular season that was shortened because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Dodgers hope that he will return to his 2019 form, when he was one of the best hitters in the league, batting .305 with 47 home runs and 115 RBI, and won the NL MVP award.

But even if it does take Bellinger longer to recover from the injury and get his swing back, the Dodgers have no shortage of firepower with Mookie Betts, Corey Seager, and others ready to step up on offense if needed as they defend their title next season.

Mookie Betts, the focus point of the blockbuster trade this offseason between the Red Sox and Dodgers has reportedly signed a 12 year, $365 million contract with the Los Anngeles Dodgers. The deal comes before he every played one game in a Dodger uniform.

The 2018 AL MVP is a four-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove winner. Betts was a big reason the Red Sox won their 4th World Series of the 21st century and how they dominated baseball in 2018 with their dynamic lineup.

Betts, 27, is expected to add a veteran presence in the leadoff spot to bat in front of reigning 2019 MVP Cody Bellinger and veteran Justin Turner. The Dodgers’ organization is hoping that Mookie can be the difference maker to get them over the hump and win a championship, something that has alluded the Dodgers, despite winning 7 consecutive division titles and 2 World Series appearances in 2017-18.

Both Los Angeles and Betts resumed contract talks last week in the hopes that they could come to a conclusion before the season opener on July 23 against the Giants. The Dodgers and Yankees are World Series favorites this year, with many predicting the two teams to face off against each other in October.

Last year, All-Star right fielder Mookie Betts decided to reject a massive $300 million extension from Boston Red Sox in hopes of commanding an even bigger contract in 2020. That probably won’t happen now due to the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic, but it appears that Betts doesn’t have too many regrets about it.

Betts, who was in the meantime traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, had a chat with reporters on Monday and discussed his decision to turn down the Red Sox. According to the 27-year-old, he isn’t questioning his choices regardless of the situation and will worry about getting a new deal once he officially hits the free-agent market.

“I don’t regret turning down that,” said Betts. “Once I make a decision, I make a decision. I’m not going back and questioning myself. I don’t worry about that. The market will be what the market is. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

According to Betts, his main concern is the health and safety of players ahead of MLB 2020 season start.

“Right now, it’s just the [health and safety] things that I’m worried about. That whole thing [free agency] is on the back burner,” he added.

Elsewhere in the conference, Betts confirmed that he has doubts about the return of baseball but that he “fully expecting to play” this year.

Reportedly, Mookie Betts was interested in staying with Boston but wanted an extension worth around $420 million. Figuring they can’t get close to that number, Red Sox shipped him to LA in exchange for outfielder Alex Verdugo and prospects Connor Wong and Jeter Downs.

During his six years in MLB, Betts managed to establish himself as one of the best position players in baseball at the moment. He made the All-Star selection in the past four years while winning AL MVP in 2018 and helping the Red Sox to World Series win in the same year.

Boston Red Sox finally made the move most of the league expected them to make. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Red Sox traded their star right fielder Mookie Betts to Los Angeles Dodgers.

Passan reports that Red Sox gave up Betts and pitcher David Price to LA while receiving outfielder Alex Verdugo. The trade also included a third team in Minnesota Twins, who got pitcher Kenta Maeda from Dodgers while sending pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol to Boston.

Reportedly, Red Sox were engaged in talks with several teams about Betts in recent days, with San Diego Padres making a strong push to sign the player. However, Boston opted to deal with Dodgers and Twins instead, seeing their offer as a better value for the future.

Mookie Betts had another great season in 2019, hitting .295 with 29 home runs, and 80 RBIs while earning his fourth consecutive All-Star appearances. Still, Red Sox have been exploring the trade options for the 27-year-old thorough the entire offseason.

Betts has just one year left on his contract, which will pay him $27 million this year. Red Sox’s chances to sign him on the extension seemed unlikely, so the team decided to get some assets for him while his value was still high.

Boston also profited from the deal by shedding Price’s contract off their books, which enabled them to get closer to their goal of getting under the luxury tax number. The veteran left-hander has three years and $96 million left on the seven-year, $217 million contract he signed in 2015.

This year’s MLB honors came to a close on Thursday night with the MVP awards being awarded to Red Sox’s Mookie Betts in the American League Milwaukee Brewers’ Christian Yelich in the National League.

Although Yelich won the NL honors with 29 out of 30 votes, it was Betts who had the better night. The 26-year-old became only the second player in MLB’s history to win the MVP, Silver Slugger, World Series and a Golden Glove in the same season.

The other player was Mike Schmidt in 1980 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Betts also won 28 votes to clinch the honors while teammate Mike Trout got the remaining two votes.

In a high-flying Boston Red Sox this season, Betts has been phenomenal. He hit five triples, 32 homers, 129 runs, 80 RBI, 10.9 WAR, 30 steals and had 186 OPS+. He was the best player in his team and in the AL, leading the league in average, runs scores, defensive runs and slugging.

In Milwaukee, the Brewers were in celebration mood after the player they acquired just in January was voted the National League’s MVP almost unanimously. Yelich has nearly been as good as Betts in Phillie, battling .326 and only two RBIS and two home runs short of becoming the NL’s first Triple Crown winner since 1937.
