Luciano Spalletti won’t be there to lead Napoli through their title defense next season. After helping the club win its first Serie A title in more than 30 years, Spalletti decided to step down as Napoli’s manager and take a break from soccer.

Spalletti recently approached Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis with a request for a one-year sabbatical, and De Laurentiis decided to let him have it.

“You have to be generous in life; I never expect anything in return,” said De Laurentiis confirming the news. “He gave us; I thank him, now it’s right that he continues to do what he loves to do.”

Luciano Spalletti took over as Napoli’s boss ahead of 2021-22 and led them to a third-place finish in his first season at the helm. He followed that up with a dominant campaign in 2022-23 that saw Napoli win the domestic title with five games to spare. They also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

It is unclear where Napoli will turn for Spalletti’s replacement. Some believe that De Laurentiis will try to keep a similar soccer philosophy with his next hire and opt for Gian Piero Gasperini, who has been doing a great job with Atalanta in recent seasons. Former Juventus and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is also believed to be in the mix.

Moving forward, Seria A side Napoli will play their home games at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. This is the result of the Naples city council’s decision to rename the San Paolo Stadium in honor of the late Argentinian soccer legend on Friday.

Maradona, who led Napoli to two domestic titles in the ’80s, died last week at the age of 60.

Napoli attempted to rename the stadium in honor of Maradona even during his life, but the city, which owns the grounds, opposed to the suggestion until now.

“It’s only right that Maradona has this recognition,” said Napoli’s president Aurelio de Laurentiis. “Even if we were to build a whole new stadium, I would name it like that.”

Diego Armando Maradona is considered the greatest player ever to wear Napoli’s jersey, having been credited for transforming the club into a powerhouse in Italy.

Prior to Maradona’s arrival, Napoli was without much success and history, while Italian football was dominated by teams from south of the country. But after the club acquired Maradona in 1984 for a world-record fee from FC Barcelona, all of that changed.

Maradona quickly propelled Napoli into the upper echelon of European clubs, and needed only three years to bring the club its first ever Seria A title and Coppa Italia trophy. More trophies followed soon, as the club won the UEFA Cup in 1988-89 and another domestic title in 1989-90.

Maradona left Napoli after only seven years, but even that was enough for him to be remembered as the greatest ever in the city of Naples.

Napoli and Juventus were set to do battle in a matchup of Serie A heavyweights on Sunday night in Turin, but after Napoli was prevented from traveling north to play the match due to COVID-19 positives in their squad, the game was not played.

Juventus showed up to the stadium and warmed up for the match as if nothing were happening, but Gennaro Gattuso’s team had been prohibited from leaving their city on a flight to Turin due to the quarantine that its squad had to observe due to the two positive tests.

The players, who have not been identified, had been in contact with their teammates which left doubt as to whether or not they could be potentially infected with the virus.

According to Italian soccer regulations, Juventus was handed a 3-0 win in a forfeit after the league refused to postpone or change the date of the match. However, Napoli is expected to challenge that decision in the courts in an attempt to have the game played at a later date.

The league said in a statement, “The protocol lays down certain rules that cannot be deviated from, which allow league matches to be played even in the event of a positive result, deploying players who have tested negative.”

Expect more news to come from this bizarre turn of events later in the week.

Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik is set to leave Seria A side Napoli this summer as he looks at “change of scenery.” This was confirmed by the team’s manager Gennaro Gattuso during a post-game conference on Wednesday night.

“It’s difficult to find someone better than Milik,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia after 2-1 win over Genoa. “However, when a player believes his time at a club is over, and he wants a change of scenery, you have to listen to him.”

Milik only played 21 games this season, and in most of them, he came off the bench. His contract is set to expire next summer, and he previously rejected the club’s offers for an extension.

According to Gattuso, he would like to keep the 26-year-old as part of his squad but won’t get against the player’s wishes.

“You can’t try to keep someone against their will, or it’s difficult to get them to listen or have the right mentality. You have to respect the wishes of the player.”

Arkadiusz Milik arrived to Napoli in 2016 after an impressive season with Ajax in which he scored 21 goals in Eredivisie. However, injuries and failure to adapt to Italian soccer limited Milik’s productivity in Naples, and he only managed to contribute 47 goals in four years.

Despite this, Milik remains highly regarded among top European clubs, and won’t lack suitors this summer. The list of clubs interested in his services includes Atletico Madrid and Tottenham.

SSC Napoli reportedly has its sights set on two young Lille standouts, Victor Osimhen and Gabriel, to join the team this summer as it looks to upgrade heading into next season.

The two Lille standouts reportedly left France to travel to Napoli on Monday in order to begin contract negotiations with the Italian club.

Rumors have stated that if contract negotiations go forward, Lille has accepted a sum figure of $112 million for transfer of the two players, paying $77 million for Osimhen and $35 million for Gabriel.

Osimhen would be the crown jewel of the deal, a 21-year-old Nigeria international striker who scored 18 goals across all competitions for the Champions League side in the 2019-20 season.

Gabriel, a Brazilian center-back who is only 22 years old, established himself as an undisputed starter and a key piece for Lille this season, who finished fourth in the French top flight this year.

The two players would be expected to play a key role for Napoli’s push for Champions League football, a Serie A title, and a Europa League title in the 2019-20 season along with players such as Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly.

If the Italian club can provide their two new young potential additions with a sufficiently attractive contract, it appears that they will be on their way to Napoli sooner rather than later.

Mexican international Hirving Lozano is close to leaving the Dutch team PSV Eindhoven for Napoli this week after both teams have agreed on a $42 million deal for the next 4 years. Lozano is about to become Napoli’s most expensive signing ever after Gonzalo Higuain, who arrived from Real Madrid for a fee of $39 million.

Lozano has been playing in the Dutch Eredivisie since 2017. In this league, he has made 140 caps for PSV, scoring a total of 40 goals and providing 23 assists which is a very impressive record for a time period shorter than two years. He was also wanted by Barcelona, but their offer was refused by Hirving due to his wish to play in the starting line-up, which is possible in Napoli. This is because the line up is vastly different and Lozano’s skills would certainly be required in a smaller team such as Napoli.

The 24-year-old Mexican representative started his career in the Mexican team Pachuca, where he managed to win the 2016 Mexican Clausura and the 2016-2017 CONCACAF Champions League, playing a total of 149 games and scoring 43 goals throughout his career there. He was sold to PSV Eindhoven in June 2017, winning the league in the first season while also being the team’s top goal scorer.
