Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Dallas Stars 5-2 in what was a thrilling Game 3 clash at the Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday. This victory sees Lightning come from behind to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final.

Steven Stamkos scored with his first shot in his postseason debut, while Victor Hedman supplied a top-class performance, providing a goal and two assists.

Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, and Ondrej Palat each provided a goal and assist apiece to round out Tampa’s tally, while Jason Dickinson and Miro Heiskanen scored for the Stars.

Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy was another standout performer, making 22 saves in what was a high-intensity clash.

“It was just an amazing experience to share with my teammates,” Stamkos exclaimed. “There’s been a lot of hard work and different things going on behind the scenes. Just to be able to get out in a game and have an impact in a game which a month ago may have never been possible. It was amazing to be part of a huge win for us. I was just really happy to obviously contribute in a game that I didn’t play too much.”

Game 4 takes place on Saturday 26th of September at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.

Calgary Flames center Sean Monahan believes in his team’s ability to go the distance during this season’s Stanley Cup playoffs. He cites the Flames’ ability to learn from their past mistakes as the main reason for his confidence.

“Right now, our team, I think the biggest thing is we’re hungry. We’ve had chances in the playoffs before and we’ve been embarrassed and obviously been knocked out a few times. Right now, you look at our team and every guy’s bought in. Everybody wants it.”

While just 25 years of age, Monahan has reached the playoffs four times in his last seven NHL seasons. He explains this, as he continued to explain, “For me personally, I’ve been with Calgary seven years now and we haven’t accomplished much. Like I said, we’re here to win. We’re trying to prove ourselves that we can be a competitive team in this league.”

Despite being seeded 1st in the Western Conference last season, the Canadian side lost to Colorado Avalanche after five games in their first-round clash. This time around, Calgary is set to play either against the St. Louis Blues or the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference First Round, with the winner being crowned as the number three seed in the Western Conference.

The Montreal Canadiens got their return to NHL action off to an explosive start on Saturday, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime after a tight game.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi opened the scoring for the Canadiens 11:27 minutes into the first period. At 6:53, Nick Suzuki doubled the Canadian franchise’s lead with an opportunistic wrist shot from the left face-off circle.

The second period looked as if it would remain goalless until Sidney Crosby banked a shot in off Price’s skate to put Pittsburgh on the scoreboard at 9:55. This was quickly followed by a power-play goal at 12:34 where Bryan Rust pulled Pittsburgh level.

The score remained deadlock throughout the third period, with Pittsburgh forward Conor Sheary missing a crucial penalty shot with 3:03 remaining on the clock. Once the game entered overtime, Montreal forward Jonathan Drouin also missed a penalty shot which he tried to score off a backhand.

While it seemed as if the game would end all square, Jeff Petry pulled one out of the bag with 6:03 remaining, thereby handing the Canadiens a dramatic late victory and a thrilling restart to their NHL campaign.

Hockey in August is yet another reason why 2020 has been an unusual year, although everyone is happy that sports are scheduled to resume, no matter what month they play in. Baseball is scheduled to start on July 23rd, with hockey close behind on August 1st.

Sports were some of the first things to shut down, and while there has been much lost revenue and fans have missed watching their favorite teams, everyone is excited to get back.

Many sports, including hockey, are going with a new format in order to finish the season fast and safe, and are hoping it will reel more fans in due to the new way the 2020 playoff tournament will be played.

Times have yet to be announced, but when the puck hits the ice in Toronto and Edmonton (the 2 cities picked to be the location hubs of the tournament), there is no doubt the eager fans will be watching the much anticipated return of the NHL.
