The post Panthers Acquire All-Star Winger Vladimir Tarasenko From the Senators appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>The Panthers have given up a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick and a third-round selection in 2025 to land Tarasenko. As part of the trade, the Senators will retain 50% of Tarasenko’s $5 million salary in 2023-24.
Despite sitting at the top of the Atlantic Division, the Panthers have struggled with getting goals throughout the season. Adding Tarasenko is a significant step in resolving this issue, considering his scoring prowess. Since making his debut in the NHL, Tarasenko compiled six campaigns with 33 or more goals.
This season, Tarasenko’s scoring dropped off, and he has only 17 goals, alongside 24 assists, in 57 games. However, with better playmaking surrounding him in Florida, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he starts racking up goals on a more frequent basis.
The Senators, on the other hand, get some assets for a player on an expiring contract. While the return seems underwhelming, their hands were tied, considering that Tarasenko had a no-movement clause in his contract and was required to green-lit any trade.
Prior to joining the Senators as a free agent this past offseason, Tarasenko also suited up for the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. He is a four-time All-Star and was part of the Blues team that won a Stanley Cup in 2019.

]]>Reynolds and Bratty were considered the favorites to snag the Senators and were prepared to pay around $1 billion for the team. But before proceeding with the purchase, the group wanted to have an exclusive 30-day window during which they would negotiate a deal for a new downtown arena.
Galatioto Sports Partners, which is handling the sale of the Senators, didn’t approve the request as it felt other bidders would be unsettled with the preferential treatment. After being served with the rejection, Reynolds-Bratty group informed GSP that they were withdrawing their bid.
According to The Athletic, Reynolds and Bratty didn’t want to commit to playing a substantial amount of money for the franchise without having clarity about the status of the Senator’s arena. On the other hand, the NHL officials took this as a sign that the group wasn’t serious about their intentions to buy the team, while GSP considered it as “unreasonable.”
Sources close to the process believe that the exit of Reynolds and Bratty might cause the price of the Senators to come down. Still, there are plenty of interested parties, such as businessman Neko Sparks’ ownership group that includes rapper Snoop Dog.

]]>In case the Senators actually sell for more than $900 million, that would be a new record for an NHL franchise. The previous record was set by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who were bought by Fenway Sports Group for $900 million in 2021.
While the Senators are valued at $800 million, Novy-Williams points to several reasons why the sale of the franchise attracted plenty of bidders who are willing to offer much more. Considering that Canadian teams rarely hit the market, this is a unique opportunity for Canadian investors to buy a team that is based in their home country.
Additionally, the costs are a lot smaller compared to what it would take to buy an NFL or NBA franchise, while the Senators also offer “lucrative real estate opportunity” and are based in the country’s capital.
The Ottawa Senators were established in the early ‘90s as an expansion franchise and made their debut in the 1992–93 season. The team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoff in its first four seasons but followed that up with 11 consecutive postseason trips. The Senators have four division championships to their name and one Stanley Cup appearance from 2006–07.

]]>The Rangers acquired Motte last season from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The 27-year-old player scored two goals for the New York teams in the playoffs before leaving the franchise as an unrestricted free agent.
Tyler Motte signed a one-year deal with the Senators that pays him $1.35 million in the 2022-23 NHL season. He played 38 games so far in the campaign, contributing with three goals and six assists for a total of nine points.
With Motte, the Rangers will boost their fourth line with a player they are already familiar with. They liked what they saw from him last season and have now corrected the mistake of not keeping him in New York.
The Senators, on the other hand, saw a chance to get something in return for a player that could leave for nothing in the summer. They are not in the mix for a playoff appearance this season, and the deal gives them an opportunity to get an extended look at a younger player in Gauthier and see if the 25-year-old player can become a part of their long-term plans.

]]>Zub will earn $18.6 million over the duration of the deal with a $4.6 million average annual salary. The agreement kicks off in the summer of 2023 and includes a 10-team no-trade list.
“He has worked hard to establish himself as an excellent NHL player and a strong defender,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion in a statement. “He consistently helps make us a better defensive team while he’s on the ice. We’re pleased to reach an agreement with him on an extension of this length.”
Zub has played 14 games in 2022-23, contributing with two goals and two assists for a total of four points. He is currently sidelined with a jaw fracture and is expected to return on ice in early 2023. The 27-year-old played a total of 142 games in the NHL and has 40 points (11 goals and 29 assists) on his resume.
The Senators are headed to another underwhelming campaign in 2022-23. They are currently at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 14-16-2 record. If they don’t change course soon, they are in danger of extending their playoff drought to six seasons.

]]>Team chairman Sheldon Plener released a statement on the matter, explaining this as “a necessary and prudent step to connect with those deeply interested parties who can show us what their vision is for the future of the team.”
The decision to sell the team comes after the passing of Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who passed away from illness at the age of 62 on March 6. He expressed his will to leave the team to his daughters, Anna and Olivia.
In order to advance the sales process, the Senators’ board of governors is expected to convene in December in Florida. Sources revealed that due to the involvement of additional layers such as background checks, it is unlikely that a sale would be approved during this meeting. Instead, the sale of the team is expected to be a months-long process.
Guiding the sales process is Galatioto Sports Partners, a firm specializing in sports financing, that was appointed for this role by the Senators. Galatioto is expected to be the team’s financial advisor throughout the sales process. A recent valuation from sports-business news outlet Sportico listed the Senators’ price tag as $655 million.

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion expressed excitement at the arrival of Motte, calling him a “tenacious checker who plays the game with pace.” Dorian added that “He’s a strong penalty killer and another competitive person who adds to the depth of our group.” Motte has also emerged as a strong penalty killer, making him both a strong defensive and offensive option.
Drafted in the fourth round by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013, Motte is yet to complete an entire NHL season, managing a career-high 74 games in 2018-19. This may change in the coming year, however, as Motte’s versatility is something that the Senators may make use of throughout the season.

]]>According to Daly, the NHL recently had discussions with the provincial health authorities and managed to get clearance for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets to compete in their home arenas.
“On the basis of our discussions in the past week, as well as our exchange of correspondence over the last 24 hours, we believe we are aligned and in agreement on the conditions on which each of our Canadian franchises can begin play in their own buildings for the start of the 2020-21 NHL season,” said Daly.
Canada has closed its borders with the United States for non-essential travelers due to the coronavirus pandemic and intends to keep it that way at least until January 21st. Although the new NHL season kicks off on January 13th, the ban won’t affect Canadian teams as they will play only against each other.
The NHL made several significant changes to their regular season format for 2020-21 to minimize the traveling and organized all teams in four divisions. Each team will only play their divisional opponents, with the format being carried over to the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.
