The Philadelphia Eagles will open their 2024 NFL season by taking part in the league’s first-ever regular season game in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The news was confirmed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday.

The Eagles will serve as the home team at Corinthians Arena, the home of Brazilian soccer club Corinthians. The game is scheduled for September 6, while Philly’s opponent is set to be announced at a later date.

“We are just incredibly enthusiastic about our growth on a global basis,” Goodell said during a media conference on Monday. “We are convinced we can be a global sport in the near future. Our ownership has committed to allowing more games to be played on an annual basis, on a global basis. We are excited about the fans’ reaction and our media partners. I think this is a great opportunity for the league, and we are committed to making it a global sport.”

The Eagles last played internationally in 2018, when they faced Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, and came out with a 24-18 win.

NFL has been focused on expanding their International Series in recent years, playing games in the UK, Germany, and Mexico. The 2024 season is expected to feature three regular-season games in London, one game in Munich, Germany, and the previously mentioned Brazil game.

Reportedly, the league is looking to add more countries to their international slate, targeting Spain for the 2025 season.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ star center Jason Kelce appears to be ready to walk away from the NFL. According to multiple reports, Kelce told his teammates that he would retire following the Eagles’ 9-31 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL Wild Card round on Monday night.

Kelce, who turned 36 in November, flirted with retirement last year after the Eagles were defeated in the Super Bowl by the Kansas City Chiefs. He ended up deciding to return for another run on a one-year deal.

While Kelce is set to become a free agent and could possibly sign with another team, the chances for that are slim. He spent his entire career with the Eagles and most likely wants to be a one-franchise player when he’s eventually inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Following the Bucs’ game, Kelce declined to talk with the media. However, he let his teammates know that he won’t be back in 2024.

“I love him. He’s one of the best to ever play the game,” right tackle Lane Johnson told reporters. “The things he can do on the football field athletically — I don’t think we’ll see another one like him for a long time.”

The Eagles selected Jason Kelce in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Since then, Kelce started 193 games with the franchise, making the Pro Bowl seven times while also being selected to First-team All-Pro six times. He was part of Philly’s team that won the Super Bowl LII.

The Seattle Seahawks can still continue dreaming of a playoff appearance after beating the Philadelphia Eagles in a 20-17 thriller on Monday night.

The win saw the Seahawks improve to a 7-7 record and snap a four-game losing streak, their longest since Pete Carroll was hired as head coach in 2010.

Things didn’t look good for the Seahawks to start off the contest as their offense, led by backup quarterback Drew Lock, struggled to generate yards. The Eagles, on the other hand, commanded a 10-0 lead in the second quarter and looked like they were in complete control.

However, the second half saw a much better Seattle team. They managed to score a touchdown on their first possession of the third quarter to tie the score, and although Philly immediately struck back, the Seahawks carried over the momentum in the fourth quarter.

Safety Julian Love set the tone for the final period by picking off Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts on a deep pass to the endzone. The teams then exchanged punts before Lock orchestrated what turned out to be a game-winning drive. He completed five passes to lead the offense 92 yards down the field, including a 29-yard TD pass to rookie wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Love then iced the game by intercepting Hurts for the second time on the night.

The win keeps the Seahawks in the hunt for a wild-card spot in the NFC, especially considering their upcoming schedule doesn’t include teams above .500. The Eagles, on the other hand, have lost footing in the race for the top seed in the NFC and now also face the danger of being jumped over by the Dallas Cowboys in NFC East.

“It takes a special group to rally around a guy that was coming into his second game of the year,” said Lock, who finished the night by completing 22 out of 33 pass attempts and throwing for 208 yards and one TD. “They’re used to the same thing all year long, same cadence, same spin of the ball, everything. For a team like that — not just the offense, the defense — to rally around me tonight, man, that was amazing.”

Veteran All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Leonard was a free agent after being released by the Indianapolis Colts in November.

Leonard received a lot of attention among contenders but narrowed down his choice between Philly and the Dallas Cowboys. Interestingly, Leonard’s debut as a member of the Eagles is expected to come this upcoming Sunday against the Cowboys.

Leonard entered the NFL in 2018 as a second-round selection by the Colts and quickly established himself as one of the best linebackers in the league. He earned All-Pro selections in each of his first four years as a pro while leading the league in forced fumbles in 2021.

However, after a pair of back surgeries limited him to just one start last season, Leonard struggled to return to form in 2023. He saw his playing time diminished as the season progressed and ended up being released after nine games in which he made 65 tackles.

Obviously, the Eagles believe that Leonard still has some gas left in the tank and can help them finish the season strong and provide depth for what they hope will be a deep playoff run. The 28-year-old has 614 career tackles to go with 15.0 sacks, 31 pass deflections, 12 interceptions, and 17 forced fumbles.

After their Super Bowl trip last season, the Philadelphia Eagles are entering the 2023 campaign as a team to beat in the NFC. But Pro Bowl defensive end Demarcus Lawrence doesn’t believe the Eagles are that much better than his Dallas Cowboys.

Speaking with reporters earlier this week, Lawrence said that the Cowboys are much closer to the Eagles than most other people think.

“I don’t feel like it’s a huge gap at all,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence feels that the Cowboys team that finished 2022 with a 12-5 record will be even better this season and give the Eagles a run for their money in NFC East.

“I feel like through this time right now, when we headed to training camp, that we made those adjustments, we learned those different things that we need to learn about our teammates so we can fully function the way we should out there on the field,” he added.

Despite the Eagles getting to an 8-0 start last season, the Cowboys did a good job in keeping up. They split the head-to-head series, and the NFC East title ended up coming down to a wire.

However, the Eagles performed much better in the postseason, where they made a dominant run through the NFC and suffered a narrow 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys, on the other hand, ended their playoff run in the divisional round, where they fell to the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL might have looked a lot different if Russell Wilson made a different decision about his future last offseason. According to Sports Illustrated‘s Greg Bishop, the Philadelphia Eagles wanted to trade for Wilson while he was still a member of the Seattle Seahawks, but the veteran quarterback turned them down.

Speaking on Seattle Sports 770 earlier this week, Bishop said that Seahawks engaged in trade talks about Wilson with multiple teams after the 2021 season wrapped up. Both the Eagles and the Washington Commanders were close to finalizing a deal, but Wilson refused to waive his no-trade clause. And we know what happened next.

Wilson instead opted to go to the Denver Broncos, where he had one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2022. The Broncos failed to reach the playoffs and fired their head coach while Wilson completed a career-low 60.5% of his passes and threw for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

The Eagles, on the other hand, doubled down on Jalen Hurts as their quarterback and saved their draft picks. They used the assets to add several quality defensive players through the draft and acquire star wideout A.J. Brown. Hurts emerged as one of the league’s signal callers, becoming an MVP candidate and leading the Philadelphia to No. 1 seed in NFC and a Super Bowl appearance.

It is safe to say that the Eagles are more than happy that Wilson turned them down. Wilson, on the other hand, will probably come to regret his decision if he continues to struggle with the Broncos.

Former Detroit Lions head coach and New England Patriots assistant Matt Patricia has been appointed as the senior defensive assistant of the Philadelphia Eagles, sources reported on Thursday.

Prior to this update, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni revealed that Patricia’s appointment was being heavily considered by the team.

“Obviously his rĂ©sumĂ© speaks for itself,” Sirianni commented during a news conference. “It gives you a great mind in there that’s done it at the highest level. It gives you great ability to bounce ideas off of with the defensive staff, and also gives me another former head coach that I can bounce ideas off of as well with things which I think would be very helpful.”

Patricia served as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017, during which time the Patriots won two Superbowl Championships, in 2014 and 2016.

In 2018, Patricia was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions, where he compiled a 13-29-1 record before leaving his position two years later.

The Philadelphia Eagles will have their franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts in the building for years to come. The team announced on Monday that Hurts agreed to a five-year extension that runs through the 2028 NFL season.

Hurts has one year left on his rookie deal and is set to receive a base salary of $4.2 million. With the extension, he reportedly becomes the highest-paid player in the history of the league.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Hurts’ new contract is worth $255 million and comes with $179.3 million in guaranteed money. His average annual salary of $51 million is the highest in NFL, while only Deshaun Watson has more guaranteed money with the $230 million he got from the Cleveland Browns.

Signing Jalen Hurts to a long-term extension was the primary offseason task for the Philadelphia Eagles. The former second-round pick is coming off his best season as a pro, throwing for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six picks in 2022 while guiding the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance. He also added 13 touchdowns on the ground while earning Pro Bowl and Second-team All-Pro honors.

The Eagles were motivated to get the deal done sooner than later, believing that the price could only go up if they waited. Several other young star quarterbacks, including Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow and Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert, are also in line for their own extensions that are expected to reset the market as well.

The Philadelphia Eagles have been busy this offseason trying to keep as many of their free agents with the team as possible. But that didn’t stop the franchise from striking a new deal with their star right tackle Lane Johnson as well.

The team announced on Friday that Johnson inked an extension with the franchise that will keep him around for the foreseeable future. While the Eagles didn’t disclose details of the agreement, the reports say that the veteran received a one-year extension and now has a contract that runs through the 2026 season.

Johnson’s extension is reportedly worth $33.4 million and comes with $30 million in guaranteed money. The move allowed the Eagles to keep one of their most important players happy while also getting some badly-needed salary cap relief. It is estimated that Philly got $10 million in cap space for the 2023 season thanks to the contract.

Speaking with the Eagles’ official website, Johnson said that his “whole goal is to retire an Eagle.”

“That’s what I’m going to do,” Johnson added. “I’m just excited to be here, be as fortunate as I am to be with one team for as long as I have. I love this game, and more importantly, I love the people and the coaches that I’m with every day, and that’s why I love the game so much.”

The Eagles drafted Lane Johnson with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Oklahoma product has since been one of the team’s most important players. He started 127 games, helping the franchise win Super Bowl LII while making four Pro Bowls and three All-Pro teams. Johnson allowed 28 sacks as a pro, but 10 of them came in his rookie campaign and none in the past two seasons.

The Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly released five-time Pro Bowl corner Darius Slay. The move was somewhat expected, considering that Slay previously asked the team to be traded.

Earlier in the offseason, the Eagles and Slay failed to work out a new contract to keep the veteran in Philly. The 32-year-old then asked and received permission to look for a trade, but it turned out there were not many options to his liking out there. In the end, the two sides decided it was best to move their separate ways and have a fresh start.

The Eagles are yet to make the move official, but Slay already confirmed the news on social media.

Slay had a solid campaign in 2022, earning a Pro Bowl nod after having 55 tackles, 14 passes defended, and three interceptions in the regular season. He reportedly entered the offseason looking for a new contract considering he had no guaranteed money left on the three-year, $50 million extension he signed in 2020.

The Eagles were also motivated to find a resolution for Slay as he was set to count $26 million against their cap in 2023. By opting to release him via post-June 1 designation, they are saving $17.5 million in cap space, although they will incur a dead cap in the next two seasons.

Slay is expected to get significant attention in the free agent market, where he’ll immediately become one of the best players available. However, with the cornerback market dwindling down this offseason, he is unlikely to get the big deal that he is probably hoping for.
