]]>The terms of the deal were not disclosed right away but reportedly include an option for Villa to keep Couthino on a permanent basis in the summer. Until then, Barcelona will continue to pay a significant portion of the player’s wages.
In order for the move to become official, Coutinho will have to pass his physical and get a work permit, but this is expected to be just a formality. He will join his new club by the end of the week and should be at manager Steven Gerrard’s disposal for the club’s Premier League fixture against Manchester United next Saturday.
Speaking about the move for Villa’s official website, Gerrard said that he is excited for a reunion with Coutinho and believes the 29-year-old will hugely benefit the club. The two previously shared the locker room at Liverpool between 2013 and 2015.
“I don’t think you get a nickname as a Magician if you’re not a special footballer,” said Gerrard of Coutinho. “He’s someone I’ve got an incredible amount of respect for.”
While playing at Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho established himself as one of the world’s best players and secured himself a $140 million transfer to Barcelona in January 2018. He was expected to be the next big star at Camp Nou, but it was soon clear that this wouldn’t be the case. Coutinho failed to make an impact at the Catalan club and struggled to the point that Barca was willing to pay him to play somewhere else.
Coutinho played 16 games for Barca this season and scored two goals. Overall, he has 25 goals and 14 assists in 106 games with the club.

]]>Coutinho has been long viewed as one of the main candidates for Barcelona exit, considering he underperformed at Camp Nou since joining the club in a $160 million record transfer from Liverpool. The club has been trying to sell him for some time now, even sending him on loan to Bayern Munich in 2019-20, but failed to find any takers.
But after Messi left to join PSG in a shocking move, Barca reportedly warmed up to the idea of keeping Coutinho. Manager Ronald Koeman is ready to give the 29-year-old another chance to succeed in Spain and has confirmed this in a recent chat with reporters.
“For me, he’s a great player, and he can be important for Barca,” said Koeman during a press conference on Friday. “I am absolutely counting on him for this season.”
According to reports, Coutinho recently attracted interest from Seria A side AC Milan while Premier League’s Arsenal also briefly considered making a run for him before landing Martin Odegaard. Still, Barca told the clubs that they won’t sell the Brazilian unless they receive a big offer.
Coutinho has been out since December with a knee injury but is expected to return to action in the coming weeks. He has played 90 games for Barcelona in all competitions so far, scoring 23 goals and adding 14 assists.

]]>It’s believed that Coutinho doesn’t have a future with Barcelona, considering his disappointing performances in Spain and high salary. The club has been trying to get a suitor for him in the past several months, but haven’t found someone willing to meet their asking price of around $80 million.
Reports from England say that Arsenal, on the other hand, is tired of Guendouzi’s antics and wants to get rid of the 21-year-old player. France international fell out of favor with Mikel Arteta’s side due to his problematic behavior and hasn’t been featured in the match squad for the last seven games.
For the Coutinho-Guendouzi swap to happen, there would have to be some money included in the deal. Arsenal would most likely have to make up for the difference in value between two players and part with around $40 million. Still, that doesn’t sound much for a player that was once considered among the best in the world.
From Barca’s standpoint, parting ways with Coutinho would help them balance books while also getting a player they would actually play. Guendouzi appears to be a great fit for the Spanish club and can rejuvenate their aging midfield.

]]>According to ESPN, sources close to club report that Coutinho is considered to be out of the door and that the club’s decision to sell him was cemented after another poor performance on Tuesday night. The fact that the coaching staff was reportedly disappointed with the 26-year-old and his work ethics since he arrived from Liverpool in January 2018 also played a big part in the decision.
“Coutinho is not a Barcelona player, that’s been made clear,” – source from the club has told ESPN.
Philippe Coutinho established himself as one of the best young soccer players in the world while in Liverpool, and he was expected to justify the tag when he joined Barcelona in a transfer worth $140 million. Coutinho started the 2018-19 season in a strong fashion, but he started struggling after an injury he suffered in October and lost his place in the starting 11. He played 33 games in La Liga this season and only scored eight goals alongside five assists.
Coutinho might not be the only one to leave the club in the summer, as Barcelona is considering the future of their coach Ernesto Valverde as well. Although Valverde led the team to two straight La Liga titles, he wasn’t as successful in Champions League. Still, the team is unlikely to make a decision until the offseason.
