The Premier League has recorded a record number of COVID-19 cases among players and staff members since the start of the pandemic, following two rounds of testing between December 28 and January 3. Although this surge in cases poses a threat to the soccer calendar, the Premier League remains confident that matches will proceed as scheduled.

In the latest rounds of testing, 2,295 coronavirus tests were administered, with 40 positive cases being detected. This is an increase of 18 positive cases from the previous week. What’s even more concerning for Premier League officials is the fact that this equals a total of 58 positive COVID cases in a two-week period; a stark increase from the 18 cases detected in the previous two-week period.

This news comes as the United Kingdom has been placed on a nationwide lockdown as a new, more transmissible strain of COVID-19 has begun to surge across the country. While professional sports are allowed to continue, the Premier League has been subject to match cancellations along with a coronavirus outbreak among the Fulham squad, which caused their game with Burnley to be called off.

The Premier League expressed its confidence in an official statement, explaining: “With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the League continues to have confidence in its COVID-19 protocols, fully backed by the government, to enable fixtures to be played as scheduled.”

In support of an overwhelming outpour of criticism from fans, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has called on the Premier League to reevaluate its decision to make certain games solely available for purchase through pay per view platforms.

With soccer fans being barred from attending live matches due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BT Sport and Sky Sports began broadcasting every Premier League game live as part of their existing soccer packages. This changed earlier this month, however, as the Premier League decided that those games that were not initially selected for broadcast would become exclusively available to those fans willing to purchase them through PPV platforms.

Now, fans who want access to games not originally included in standard soccer packages are required to pay a hefty £14.95 fee (approximately $19.54) per live game.

“I am calling on the Premier League to immediately act and review its current pay-per-view arrangements for live matches in the UK,” Ashley stated to the press. He went on to suggest that the Premier League charge fans only £4.95 ($6.47) per match.

The pricing issue is set to be reviewed at a Premier League shareholders meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

After years of dominating campaigns by Manchester City and Liverpool it looks like we are finally in an open and unpredictable English Premier League season in 2020/21. This argument could especially be made after this past weekend, which saw several heavyweights suffer unexpected, and in some cases, embarrassing defeats.

The first one to stumble was Man City, who played just 1-1 against Leeds United on Saturday despite being the overwhelming pick to win the game. Leicester then followed on Sunday by being outplayed at home by West Ham, who left King Power Stadium with an impressive 0-3 win. But it turned out this was just the beginning.

Manchester United welcomed Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, looking to bounce back after an unconvincing win over Brighton last weekend. The Red Devils opened the game in the best manner possible, striking in the first couple of minutes thanks to Bruno Fernandes, who converted a penalty kick. What happened next will probably keep United’s manager Ole Gunnar Solskajer awake at night for a long time.

Tottenham needed just five minutes to turn around the result, with Tanguy Ndombele and Son Heung-min scoring in 4th and 7th minute to execute swift comeback. Then Anthony Martial added to United’s demise, receiving a red card for intentionally hitting Erik Lamela and leaving his team with 10 players to chase the result.

Tottenham seized the opportunity and scored four more goals to set the final score of 1-6 and walk away with their biggest win at Old Trafford in club’s history.

The biggest shock was left for the end. In the last game of day, Aston Villa faced Liverpool and demolished the reigning champs to get an unlikely 7-2 win.

Villa had a flying opening of the match, with Ollie Watkins scoring a brace to give his team a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. Liverpool hinted a comeback in 33rd minute, cutting the lead in half thanks to Mo Sallah. However, comeback never came.

Inspired Villa continued to score at will, with John McGinn increasing to 3-1 just several minutes later while Watkins completed a hat-trick before the first half concluded. Salah once again left his team in the game with a goal in 60th minute, only for Jack Grealish to score twice and give Liverpool their most devastating loss since 1963.

After Liverpool’s 4-0 midweek win over Crystal Palace, the Reds knew that they could clinch their Premier League title with a win in a visit to second-place Manchester City next week.

What they might not have expected, however, was for City to lose on Thursday night to Chelsea, which went ahead and wrapped up their first ever Premier League title ahead of time.

Manchester City dropped its match in London on Thursday night by a 2-1 final score, which was enough to clinch the title for the Reds. Their English league championship is their first since 1990, before the creation of the current Premier League top flight.

Despite social distancing measures enacted due to the ongoing pandemic, fans gathered outside of Anfield to celebrate their long-awaited trophy. The lack of a Premier League title had long been a sore spot for one of Europe’s top soccer sides.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was elated at his team’s Premier League title, but also stated that he hopes that the team’s run of success won’t stop after this year’s trophy and last year’s Champions League trophy.

In the midst of the celebration, Klopp remarked of his team, “The consistency is so incredible, I cannot describe it. We will not stop — we will stay focused. We see the opportunity. Not stopping does not mean we will win everything, we just want to improve.”

Now, Liverpool has seven matches left in the season to aim to break the all-time Premier League points record of 100 points held by Manchester City.

Premier League returned after more than three months of absence but few things have changed. Manchester City is still scoring at will while Arsenal continues to disappoint its fans.

After Aston Villa and Sheffield United opened the 2019/20 season resume with 0-0 draw, Man City and Arsenal faced off in a highly-anticipated derby at Etihad Stadium. The match didn’t start good for Arsenal, as midfielder Granit Xhaka and center-back Pablo Mari had to leave the game due to injuries in the first 25 minutes. It turned out that this was just the beginning.

City attacked for the better part of the first half and managed to squeeze in a goal with almost no time left on the clock thanks to forward Raheem Sterling. Then four minutes in the second half, David Luiz, who substituted in for injured Mari, received a red card after taking down Riyad Mahrez in the penalty box.

Kevin De Bruyne converted the penalty kick to give Man City 2-0 lead, while young midfielder Phil Foden scored in overtime for a final result of 3-0.

With this win, Manchester City fortified the second spot on Premier League standings with 60 points. Arsenal, on the other hand, fell further behind the European competition spot as they currently sit at ninth place with 41 points.

English Premier League has made the first step in the attempt to resume the 2019/20 season. The league officially confirmed on Monday that the clubs received a green light to return to training.

The decision is a result of a conference call between league officials, club representatives, and medical experts in which they laid out a plan for players to start training again.

According to the plan, the training will be limited to small groups, and the players will have to respect the social distancing rule. Also, there will be no contact training at this stage.

“This first stage has been agreed in consultation with players, managers, Premier League club doctors, independent experts and the Government,” said the Premier League officials in a statement. “Strict medical protocols of the highest standard will ensure everyone returns to training in the safest environment possible.”

The exact return of Premier League soccer is still to be determined, although the league and clubs hope to have first games on June 12th. However, this will mostly depend on the health situation and the fitness of the players.

“We haven’t changed the start date; we have to be flexible about it,” said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters. “What we don’t want to do is continually to move that start date. So, we haven’t changed it but we need to be flexible and acknowledge we’re in a step-by-step process.”

The return of Premier League clubs to training follows the German Bundesliga’s decision to resume its competition last weekend. Bundesliga became the first major soccer league to continue the 2019/20 season after suspension due to coronavirus pandemic. Similar decisions are expected by Italian Seria A and Spanish La Liga.

In the latest rounds of testing, 2,295 coronavirus tests were administered, with 40 positive cases being detected. This is an increase of 18 positive cases from the previous week.
