The post Ex-Broncos QB Russell Wilson Agrees to a 1-Year Deal With the Steelers appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Reportedly, Wilson agreed to a one-year deal for a veteran’s minimum. He will earn an additional $36.6 million from the Denver Broncos, who will officially release him when the new league year starts.
After two underwhelming seasons with the Broncos, Wilson was informed last that the franchise was moving on from him. Considering that Wilson was just about to enter the five-year, $242.6 million extension he signed with the franchise in 2022, Denver was left with $85 million in dead cap.
Despite not being officially released, Wilson was granted permission from the Broncos to discuss terms with interested teams. He reportedly had several suitors, with the teams being intrigued by the opportunity to bring a future Hall of Famer on a cheap deal. Eventually, Wilson decided to go to Pittsburgh, likely believing the Steelers give him the best shot for starting and playing in the Super Bowl.
Throughout the offseason, the Steelers publicly stated their support for signal-caller Kenny Pickett, their first-round pick in 2022. However, it makes sense for the franchise to get a veteran option like Wilson, considering Pickett was largely inconsistent in his two years with the franchise and is the only QB they have under contract after Mason Rudolph became a free agent and Mitch Trubisky got released.

]]>In a piece published shortly after the Broncos’ made the announcement of Wilson’s benching, Russini detailed two-month negotiations between the two sides regarding the player’s contract. Reportedly, the Broncos wanted Wilson to defer the $37 million “injury guarantee” on his contract that would kick in if he isn’t able to pass his medical in March.
At the time, the Broncos told Wilson that he would lose his starting job and be made inactive if he didn’t agree to the contract change. The 35-year-old player declined, leading to his recent benching and making him certain that he played his last game with the franchise.
Wilson signed a five-year, $245 million contract extension with the Broncos ahead of the 2022 season. He has $39 million guaranteed for the upcoming season, and it would cost Denver approximately $85 million in dead cap money to release him before March. They can also spread the hit between 2024 and 2025 if they cut him with a post-June 1 designation.
The Broncos are currently 7-8 after starting the season 1-5 and remain in the playoff race. Wilson will finish the 2023 campaign, having completed 66.4 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight picks.

]]>Speaking on Seattle Sports 770 earlier this week, Bishop said that Seahawks engaged in trade talks about Wilson with multiple teams after the 2021 season wrapped up. Both the Eagles and the Washington Commanders were close to finalizing a deal, but Wilson refused to waive his no-trade clause. And we know what happened next.
Wilson instead opted to go to the Denver Broncos, where he had one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2022. The Broncos failed to reach the playoffs and fired their head coach while Wilson completed a career-low 60.5% of his passes and threw for 3,524 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
The Eagles, on the other hand, doubled down on Jalen Hurts as their quarterback and saved their draft picks. They used the assets to add several quality defensive players through the draft and acquire star wideout A.J. Brown. Hurts emerged as one of the league’s signal callers, becoming an MVP candidate and leading the Philadelphia to No. 1 seed in NFC and a Super Bowl appearance.
It is safe to say that the Eagles are more than happy that Wilson turned them down. Wilson, on the other hand, will probably come to regret his decision if he continues to struggle with the Broncos.

]]>According to The Athletic’s sources, Wilson approached the Seahawks’ ownership shortly after the season ended with hopes of convincing them to move on from Carroll and Schneider. The request was reportedly rooted in Wilson’s belief that the duo is hampering his pursuit of additional Super Bowl wins and individual recognitions. He proposed that the franchise instead hires Sean Payton, who had just walked away from the New Orleans Saints at the time.
A few days after Wilson’s request, the Seahawks’ ownership organized a meeting of the team’s top officials. The conclusion of the meeting was that Carroll and Schneider had the full support and that Wilson was the one that needed to go. He ended up being traded to the Denver Broncos in a move that netted Seattle two first-round picks and two second-round picks, among other assets.
Shortly after The Athletic’s story got out, Wilson’s lawyers released a statement saying it is “entirely fabricated.” The player himself also denied the report on social media.
After being traded to the Broncos, Russell Wilson proceeded to have one of his worst seasons in the NFL. He threw for 3,524 yards and a career-low 16 touchdowns, while Denver went 4-11 in his 15 games as a starter. The Broncos’ poor performances caused the ownership to move on from head coach Nathaniel Hackett and later hire Payton.

]]>Wilson hit the ground hard after finding himself on the end of a 13-yard scramble with 11 minutes and 45 seconds left on the clock. Upon being evaluated for a concussion, the Broncos’ medical team decided to take him out of the game.
“(He was) putting his body on the line, man,” Broncos backup quarterback Brett Rypien said of the incident leading up to Wilson’s concussion. “We can say all we want — we’re 3-9, they’re 9-3 and the guy is out there battling his ass off, trying to win the game. That to me is somebody I want to follow.”
Following the game, head coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed that Wilson had been formally placed in the league’s concussion protocol.
By being placed in concussion protocol, Wilson will need to meet a series of requirements before he can be cleared to return to first-team practice. This includes an examination from an independent physician.
Denver has just four games left to play in the regular season, starting with their clash against the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday.

]]>Wilson is dealing with a hamstring injury and reportedly pushed to play regardless. However, the Broncos’ head coach Nathaniel Hackett decided not to take the risk due to fear of long-term consequences.
Reportedly, Wilson is set to be reevaluated next week and might even miss the Week 8 clash against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London if he doesn’t show enough progress. The 33-year-old player has 1,442 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions throughout the first six games.
Losing their starter must feel like a tragedy for the Broncos, especially since they need to start stacking up wins if they want to keep any chance of reaching the playoffs. However, they can have comfort in the fact that Wilson’s replacement already beat the Jets once.
Rypien has been with the Broncos since 2019 and has made just one NFL start in his career. That start came during the 2020 season against the Jets and resulted in a 37-28 win for Denver. The Boise State product had 242 passing yards and two touchdowns in that game.
The Broncos are currently 2-4 and are on a three-game losing streak. The Jets, on the other hand, are playing above all expectations and find themselves second in AFC East with a 4-2 record.

]]>Wilson’s injury is characterized as a strained latissimus dorsi, which is one of the biggest muscles humans have in their backs. Lat strains are known to cause big discomfort and can significantly impact mobility.
Reportedly, Wilson isn’t expected to have a procedure and has instead decided to take platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in an attempt to relieve the discomfort. The Broncos’ doctors are predicting that the issue might persist for the next several weeks, but the 33-year-old doesn’t plan to sit out games.
Russell Wilson joined the Broncos in a blockbuster trade from the Seattle Seahawks during the offseason. He was expected to be the missing piece for Denver’s return to championship contender status, but things are not looking that way so far in the 2022 season.
The Broncos’ offense has struggled under Wilson so far, managing to score only six touchdowns throughout the first five weeks of 2022. Wilson himself is completing only 59.4 percent of his passes and has thrown for 1,254 yards, four TDs, and three interceptions.

]]>Ryan and Wilson both struggled in the Thursday Night Football clash between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos, with neither signal-caller managing to score a touchdown. Not only that, but there were no TDs in the game, which the Colts won 12-9 in overtime.
Kickers instead took the spotlight. The Colts’ fourth-year kicker Chase McLaughlin made all four of his field goal attempts, including two 50+ yarders in regular time and a 48-yard field goal in overtime to get Indy the win. On the other hand, Denver’s veteran Brandon McManus made three FGs and had one field goal from 34 yards blocked.
Wilson had the best chance to get a TD score, leading his offense 70 yards down the field after McLaughlin kicked the field goal for the Colts’ lead in overtime. However, facing 4&1 on Indy’s 5-yard line, Wilson had his endzone pass to Courtland Sutton batted down by Stephon Gilmore.
In the end, both Ryan and Wilson had a game they want to forget. Ryan finished the game with 251 passing yards and two interceptions. Wilson was picked two times as well while throwing for 274 yards.
The win allowed the Colts to improve to a 2-2-1 record and remain in the race for the AFC South title. The Broncos are now 2-3 and sit third in the AFC West.

]]>Wilson hurt the middle finger on his throwing hand against the Rams and was forced to undergo surgery on Friday. The Seahawks still don’t have a timeline on the 32-year-old star’s return, but multiple reports say that he will be out for at least a month and possibly much longer than that.
The news comes after Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll described the injury as a “badly sprained finger.”
“There is a lot of work to be done in assessing all of that,” Carroll said via ESPN. “Russell is one of the great healers of all time, and he’ll do whatever he can to get back as soon as absolutely possible.”
Wilson will certainly be heartbroken by the stint on the sidelines, considering he has never missed a game in his NFL career. He has made 149 consecutive starts since 2012, which is the longest active streak in the league.
Wilson has been playing on a high level in 2021, completing a career-high 72 percent of his passes through the first five weeks. He has 1,196 passing yards and 10 passing touchdowns so far in the campaign while only throwing one interception.

]]>Being thrashed 13-38 by the Cardinals in Week 1, Tennessee entered Week 2 with something to prove. But their offense didn’t get that memo in the first half, managing to put just nine points on the board via field goals.
The Seahawks, on the other hand, piled up three touchdowns and added one made FG to give themselves a comfortable 24-9 lead at the end of the second quarter. This included a 75-yard touchdown drive with less than a minute left on the clock.
The second half, however, saw a different version of the Titans taking the field. Thanks to a monstrous effort by running back Derrick Henry, which included a 60-yard TD run, the Titans erased the difference and forced overtime.
Tennessee got the first possession in the OT but turned the ball over to Russell Wilson and Seattle with a quick three and out. Luckily for the Titans, the Seahawks also failed to seize the opportunity with Wilson taking a sack at his own 1-yard line.
This allowed the Titans to get a good starting position and set themselves up for an easy 36-yard field goal attempt that kicker Randy Bullock didn’t have trouble converting.
Henry was the best player on the field on Sunday night, rushing for 182 yards and three touchdowns while adding 55 receiving yards from six catches. Julio Jones also had an impressive outing for the Titans, catching six passes for 128 yards.
The Seahawks were led by signal-caller Russell Wilson, who threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns, and wideout Tyler Lockett, who had 178 receiving yards on eight receptions.
Tennessee, who now improved to 1-1, faces their divisional rivals, the Indianapolis Colts next week. Seattle, who is also 1-1 to start the season, travels to Minnesota to face the Vikings in Week 3.
