The Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson had to depart early from his team’s 34-28 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday after suffering a concussion.

Wilson hit the ground hard after finding himself on the end of a 13-yard scramble with 11 minutes and 45 seconds left on the clock. Upon being evaluated for a concussion, the Broncos’ medical team decided to take him out of the game.

“(He was) putting his body on the line, man,” Broncos backup quarterback Brett Rypien said of the incident leading up to Wilson’s concussion. “We can say all we want — we’re 3-9, they’re 9-3 and the guy is out there battling his ass off, trying to win the game. That to me is somebody I want to follow.”

Following the game, head coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed that Wilson had been formally placed in the league’s concussion protocol.

By being placed in concussion protocol, Wilson will need to meet a series of requirements before he can be cleared to return to first-team practice. This includes an examination from an independent physician.

Denver has just four games left to play in the regular season, starting with their clash against the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday.
