Novak Djokovic didn’t let the ugly default from US Open earlier this month affect his game. Instead, Djokovic bounced back with a confident performance on the 2020 Italian Open, where he won his record 36th ATP Tour Masters 1000 title on Monday.

Djokovic delivered a dominant outing at the tournament, dropping just one set on his way to Finals. There, the 33-year-old Serbian faced No. 15 ranked Diego Schwartzman and proceeded to secure an easy 7-5, 6-3 win.

“I never had an issue in my life to move on from something,” said Djokovic after the tournament, referring to his ejection from US Open. “Regardless how difficult it is I try to take the next day and hope for the best and move on.”

“Having a tournament a week after that happened helped a lot … just because I really wanted to get on the court and just get whatever traces of that – if there’s any – out, and I think I had a really good week,” he added.

In Women’s singles, Simona Halep secured her first Italian Open title. Halep faced Karolina Pliskova in the finals and won the first set 6-0 before her opponent decided to retire from the match due to thigh injury.

”In 2013, here I started to (reach) the top of world tennis,” said Halep. ”Since then I started to play really well and finally, after two finals, I could win this title.”

The WTA tennis season will be back in full swing following the prolonged shutdown resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. The first tournament on the women’s tennis calendar, Palermo Ladies’ Open, is set to begin on August 3rd.

Last week, two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep confirmed her intention to participate in the tournament, while fellow major tournament winners Jelena Ostapenko and Svetlana Kuznetsova confirmed their participation as well. Now, three more major names will be added to the tournament tree.

They are Johanna Konta, Petra Martic, and Marketa Vondrousova—all of whom are in the top 20 of the WTA World Rankings. A fifth top 20 player, Maria Sakkari, also entered her name into the draw.

In addition to the above five players, the rest of the seeded players at the tournament are world number 22 Anett Kontaveit, world number 23 Elise Mertens, and world number 24 Donna Vekic.

After hearing news of Halep’s participation, Palermo tournament director Oliviero Palma had this to say, “Halep’s participation is exceptional news, it had been decades since Palermo last hosted a former No.1. Our city is very devoted to world tennis, her presence is one of great interest for everybody.”

Simona Halep, the No.2 women’s tennis player in the world, might not make it to the US Open this year. Halep issued a statement on Wednesday in which she said that she wouldn’t play at the tournament’s 2020 edition if the organizers decide to go with previously announced conditions and health protocols.

The US Open recently shared its health and safety protocols, conditions, and guidelines that tennis players will have to adhere to in the wake of ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Some of the rules include frequent testing, limited movability around New York, restrictions on a number of supporting staff players can bring, and possible isolation to hotel rooms.

Several top players expressed their concerns about these protocols, with No.1 tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic saying it would be “impossible” to play under these conditions. Halep agrees, saying that “given the conditions outlined in the U.S. Open announcement this morning, as of today I do not currently plan to play in NYC.”

In case that the situation improves and US Open tones down on the restrictions, Halep will revise her decision.

“I would like to underline that my decision is not set in stone,” she added.

While she emerged as one of the best tennis players in the world in recent years, winning the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019, Simona Halep hasn’t seen much success at the US Open. Halep never played in the finals at Flushing Meadows and has made it to the semi-finals just once. In the past three years, she hasn’t made it past the second round.

After we witnessed several surprises in the men’s singles at the 2019 US Open in previous days, the time came for shockers in the women’s singles as well. The current Wimbledon champion and No.4 seeded Simona Halep was eliminated in the second round of the tournament by unseeded Taylor Townsend.

The match started great for Halep, as she easily won the first set with 6-2. Townsend, however, managed to remain composed and started playing a lot better in the second set, managing to get a confident 6-3 victory.

Then, in the third set, both players gave their best, which lead to a nerve-wracking tie-breaker. Although the experience was on Halep’s side, Townsend was the one who kept her calm when it mattered the most and ended on a winning end of a 7-4 result.

This was another early elimination for Halep at the US Open, and it seems like she just can’t catch a break at this tournament. Prior to this, the 27-year-old Romanian saw two consecutive first-round exits in Flushing Meadow.

For Taylor Townsend, on the other hand, this might be an opportunity to finally have her big Grand Slam break. This was the first time she advanced in the third round on US Open, and it ties her best Grand Slam success, as she also played the third round at French Open in 2015.

“This means a lot,” – said Townsend after the match. “It’s been a long journey. … I’ve had some really close matches this year and just haven’t been able to get over the hump. This match means so much, and it gives me so much confidence to know that I can do it.”

To everyone’s surprise, on July 13, the Romanian Simona Halep managed to beat former world number one Serena Williams at the Centre Court, winning her first Wimbledon title.

The talented 27-year-old player defeated Williams in a match that lasted 56 minutes and ended with a score of 6-2. Halep showed great skill on the court and remained really calm throughout her stunning performance. Williams, on the other hand, seemed pretty uncoordinated and made many mistakes. The Romanian quickly took initiative and set her dominance on the field really early in the game, coming to a lead of 3-0 in just eight minutes. From there, she continued setting a pace so intense that Williams could not follow it. This is Halep’s second victory against Serena in 11 matches. She stopped Williams in her intention to reach a 24th Grand Slam title, equaling the record set previously by Margaret Court. Halep’s victory was widely celebrated in her country since she is the first Romanian to win at Wimbledon.

Victory at Wimbledon comes with €2.5 million worth of prize money, as well as 2,000 WTA points.
