The Texas Rangers confirmed earlier this week that their ace, Max Scherzer, will miss the start of the 2024 MLB season. According to the reigning World Series champions, the veteran right-hander had surgery to resolve an issue with a herniated disc.

Scherzer detailed his decision to have the surgery in a statement shared by the Rangers. According to the 39-year-old player, he was diagnosed with a herniated disc after experiencing discomfort in his back early in the offseason. After having “several conservative treatments” and “consulting with multiple specialists,” it became clear that the procedure was the best option.

“Getting this procedure done now will give me the best chance to pitch as much as possible for the Rangers in 2024. I look forward to putting in the rehab work and getting back on the mound next summer,” Scherzer added.

Scherzer’s absence leaves the Rangers’ rotation severely undermanned for the start of the 2024 campaign. The team is also expected to be without two-time NL Cy Young Award Jacob deGrom and free-agent signing Tyler Mahle, who are both recovering from respective Tommy John surgeries.

Max Scherzer joined the Texans ahead of MLB trade deadline in a blockbuster trade with the New York Mets. Scherzer went 4-2 in eight starts, posting a 3.20 ERA and 54 strikeouts, before being shut down for the regular season due to a shoulder injury. He ended up returning in the postseason, making two starts before being shut once again due to back tightness.

“It’s a total team effort to win a World Series,” Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer exclaimed after his team’s victory. “It’s never one guy.” The team put in a mammoth effort to not only win the World Series but recover from a devastating season in 2021 when they lost 102 games.

After losing eight consecutive games in August and six of its first seven games in September, the Rangers were able to clinch a wild-card berth. From there, they found their form, winning seven consecutive playoff games to overcome the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, and defending champions Houston Astros en route to the World Series.

Texas Rangers’ ace Max Scherzer had a disappointing return to the mound in Game 3 of the ALCS series against the Houston Astros. Making his 2023 postseason debut, Scherzer allowed five runs in four innings of action and shoulders much of the blame for his team’s 8-5 loss.

Scherzer, who was sidelined for more than a month while dealing with a shoulder strain, didn’t seem in complete command of his pitches from the start. He particularly struggled with a slider, a pitch that served him well throughout his Hall of Fame-worthy career.

Scherzer allowed five hits before being pulled out in the fourth inning. This included a 25th career postseason homer for Houston’s second baseman Jose Altuve.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Scherzer said that he knows what he needs to do in order to be better next time.

“It comes down to execution,” said Scherzer. “I know what I need to do.”

Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy, on the other hand, wasn’t that tough on Scherzer.

“He’s going to be a little rusty overall,” said Bochy. “I was really pleased with his stuff. It’s only going to get better. … He feels good, that’s what important.”

Texas Rangers’ right-hand pitcher Jacob deGrom will undergo a Tommy John surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of the 2023 MLB campaign. The news was confirmed on Tuesday by Rangers’ general manager Chris Young.

DeGrom made six starts this season, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts. However, he hasn’t played since late April due to issues with forearm stiffness and elbow inflammation.

The Rangers made a big splash in this year’s free agency by landing deGrom, who came to Texas on a five-year, $185 million deal. And while the early returns on the investment seem promising, the team will now have to wait around 12 months before seeing their prized pitcher on the mound again.

DeGrom himself is frustrated with the development but told the Dallas Morning News that he is determined to overcome the challenge.

“It’s not ideal. But at least we know what it is now,” said de Grom. “I want to get it fixed and will set a goal to be back before the end of next year.”

Jacob deGrom spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the New York Mets. He won the NL Cy Young Award twice and earned four All-Star nods while in New York. His career stats include an 84–57 record as a starter with a 2.53 ERA and 1,652 strikeouts.

General manager Chris Young confirmed that the starting pitcher underwent an MRI which showed the inflammation. He added that the team is expected to have a better idea of what to do with the player in seven to 10 days’ time.

“There’s no need to push him,” Young explained. “He came in today and felt OK, which is a positive, but given how important he is to us and our season, we’re going to play this very cautiously and see how he responds over the next several days to treatment.”

A two-time National League Cy Young Award winner, deGrom signed a $185 million, five-year contract with the Rangers in December after spending two seasons with the New York Mets that were marred by injuries.

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager departed early from his team’s 8-5 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night with a hamstring setback.

Seager was running between first and second base after hitting an opposite-field double in the fifth inning when he pulled up with left hamstring tightness. While he seemed to turn around the first base without issue, Seager began to slow down a few steps later; making his way to the second base with his injury. After touching second base, the shortstop bent down and headed for the Rangers’ dugout, even before a trainer could arrive on the field to evaluate him.

“There’s some tightness there and we’ll see where we’re at [Wednesday],” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy reporters after the game, explaining that Seager was due to undergo medical evaluations.

Following Seager’s exit, Josh Smith took over as the team’s pinch runner and filled in as shortstop for the remainder of the game.

Prior to arriving in Texas last season, Seager missed about two and a half months due to fracturing his right hand after getting hit by a pitch.

Jacob deGrom has agreed to a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers. By luring the MLB’s top pitcher to Dallas, the Rangers are hoping to strengthen their struggling pitching lineup.

After spending all nine of his previous MLB seasons with the New York Mets, deGrom decided to opt out of the final two years of his contract. Despite missing out on the first four months of the season with a stress reaction in his shoulder, the 34-year-old remained a top trade target of the Rangers.

DeGrom’s contract is the latest in what has been a busy few months for the Rangers on the trade front. Less than a year ago, the Rangers closed a 10-year, $325 million contract with shortstop Corey Seager while signing second baseman Marcus Semien on a seven-year deal worth $175 million.

While finishing last season with a 5-4 record and 3.08 ERA in 11 starts, deGrom proved to be a reliable pitcher for the Mets, racking up 102 strikeouts against just eight walks, with nine home runs allowed.

The Texas Rangers decided to play it safe during their search for a new manager. The franchise went with a winning resume and experience, hiring former San Francisco Giants skipper Bruce Bochy to lead their team in 2023.

The Rangers announced the move on Friday, revealing that Bochy inked a three-year deal.

Bochy comes to Texas with 2,003 career wins, and three World Series titles won with the Giants. He will now be tasked with returning the Rangers to winning ways after the franchise endured six seasons without a postseason appearance.

“As we went through the interview process, Bruce’s passion and excitement about returning to the dugout was very evident,” Rangers general manager Chris Young said in a statement. “It became clear he was the ideal individual to lead our club as we continue to build a championship culture here in Arlington.”

The Texas Rangers made a big splash in free agency ahead of the 2022 MLB season, handing out rich deals to shortstop Corey, second baseman Marcus Semien and right-hander Jon Gray. However, the team struggled for the better part of the campaign, prompting the franchise to part ways with manager Chris Woodward.

Bruce Bochy has compiled a 2,003 – 2,029 record with the San Diego Padres and the Giants during his 25 years as an MLB manager. Besides three World Series wins with the Giants, Bochy also has one World Series appearance with the Padres. He decided to retire in 2019 after a 77-85 campaign with San Francisco.

The Texas Rangers announced earlier this week that the organization parted ways with manager Chris Woodward. The decision was confirmed by the team’s president of baseball operations Jon Daniels in a statement issued on Monday.

Woodward is out after leading the Rangers to a 52-63 record and third place in AL West so far in the season. This is considered a big underachievement for the franchise, especially since they went on a shopping spree and committed to more than $500 million in free agency.

The Rangers were hopeful to be at least in a playoff spot by this time in the season after luring stars Corey Seager and Marcus Semien to Texas. However, the team is looking far from a contender at this point, prompting the front office to make the switch in the dugout.

“We have had extensive discussions over the last several weeks, and while the team’s current performance is certainly a big part of this decision, we are also looking at the future,” said Daniels. “As the Rangers continue to develop a winning culture and put the pieces together to compete for the postseason year in and year out, we felt a change in leadership was necessary at this time.”

Chris Woodward was hired by the Rangers ahead of the 2019 MLB season. He failed to post a winning record in any of the past three seasons and has finished last in AL West in the past two years.

Outfielder Willie Calhoun doesn’t want to play for the Texas Rangers anymore after the team demoted him to the minors over the weekend. Calhoun made this clear in an interview with The Athletic.

Speaking with the media outlet shortly after getting optioned to the Triple-A Round Rock, Calhoun said that his main goal in the minors is to force a trade.

“(I’m) gonna go to Triple-A and put myself in a position to get traded,” the 27-year-old explained. “I do want to be traded.”

Calhoun felt so disillusioned by the Rangers’ move that he doesn’t think he’ll suit up for them anymore.

“I don’t know if I’ll play another game in a Rangers uniform, and I let them know that,” he added.

Calhoun had a rough start to the 2022 MLB season, batting .136 with one home run and two RBIs in 18 games. However, the Vallejo-native believes his struggles are in part because of the way Rangers tried to change his game. According to him, the change of scenery would help him get his career back on track and finally start living up to his potential.

Calhoun joined the Rangers from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017 as part of the trade that saw Yu Darvish head in the opposite direction. Since then, he has played 253 MLB games for the franchise, batting .241 with 32 homers and 103 RBIs.
