The post Hawks All-Star PG Trae Young Requires Hand Surgery, Will Miss at Least 4 Weeks appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Young hurt his hand during the 123-121 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Friday. An MRI test showed that Young suffered a “tear of the radial collateral ligament (RCL) in the fifth finger of his left hand.” He will have surgery this week and be re-evaluated after four weeks, meaning his absence could be even longer than that.
Young has been enjoying a strong campaign in 2023-24, averaging 26.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 10.8 assists per game. He received his third All-Star nod this season, being selected to the 2024 All-Star game by Commissioner Adam Silver as an injury replacement.
With Young out for such an extended period of time, the Hawks find themselves in big trouble. After a poor start to the season, the team looked like it was poised for a strong finish and a place in the Play-In tournament. But that now seems it could be a bigger challenge than expected.
The Hawks are currently sitting at No. 10 in the Eastern Conference with a 25-32 record. They are 3.5 games ahead of the Brooklyn Nets, the first team currently out of the Play-In picture.

]]>Young suffered a concussion during a 116-95 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. The 25-year-old player took charge by Cavs’ Isaac Okoro in the fourth quarter and was accidentally hit in the head. Young, who finished the night with 15 points and five assists, remained on the court for a couple more minutes before heading to the locker room.
According to the Hawks’ announcement, Young will now start the NBA-mandated Return-to-Participation process, and there is “no predetermined timetable to complete the process”.
Young has been enjoying a strong season, averaging 26.9 points and a career-high 10.8 assists in 39 games. He is shooting 42.2% from the field and 36.4% from behind the three-point line.
The Hawks have been one of the most disappointing teams in 2023-24 but showed some signs of life recently, winning three straight games before the loss to the Cavs. They are sitting at No. 10 in the Eastern Conference with an 18-24 record.

]]>“I think I’ll be able to play through it,” Young said after his team’s win, adding, “It’s more just letting the swelling go down. But I’ll be able to play through it.” The 24-year-old player added that, if necessary, he may resort to wearing goggles when he plays until the injury subsides.
During the second period of the Knicks’ game, Young jumped to contest a Julius Randle drive and appeared to be knocked in the face by Randle’s hand. Young stayed on the floor for several minutes before making his way off the court with a towel over his face.
Young later rejoined his teammates on the bench before rejoining the game in the fourth quarter whilst wearing protective eyewear despite struggling to see out his injured eye. He finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

]]>Being blown out in Game 2, the Hawks entered Game 3 much better. They opened the first quarter with a 7-0 run and were in the lead for the better part of the first three quarters.
The turning point for Atlanta happened in the last minute of the third quarter when Young stepped on the foot of the referee Sean Wright and injured his ankle. The 22-year-old All-Star fell to the ground in pain and was forced to go to the locker room for examination.
Young eventually returned on the floor early in the fourth quarter but looked obviously bothered by the injury. After scoring 32 in the first three quarters, he only managed to get three points in the final period.
With Young struggling, Milwaukee was able to erase Atlanta’s lead and comfortably get ahead to close out the game. Khris Middleton played a major role in the comeback for the Bucks, outscoring the Hawks by himself in the fourth quarter and finishing the night with 38 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.
Milwaukee’s superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo also had a big outing, posting a double-double with 33 points and 11 boards. Bobby Portis added 15 points off the bench.
The series remains in Atlanta for Game 4 and resumes on Thursday. It is unclear whether Young, who is set to have an MRI on his ankle, will be ready to go by then.
“I got some treatment on it. I’m going to go get some more in the morning. That’s all I can do right now, is to get treatment,” said Youn about the injury.
