Her attack on the US Open came after her stunning defeat to Varvara Gracheva. After holding a 6-1 5-1 lead, the 30th seed went on to lose 1-6 7-6 6-0. She described the match as the most painful she experienced in her career.
Mladenovic had the following to say regarding her time at the US Open, “It’s a nightmare what we are experiencing here. I have only one desire, and that’s to get my freedom back and even that we don’t have yet.”
“If I had known that playing cards for 40 minutes with a mask with a player who tested positive and ultimately negative would have these consequences, I would never have set foot in this tournament.”

]]>Williams, currently ranked No. 67 player in the world, was the oldest player in the draw at this year’s US Open at the age of 40. This was her 22nd appearance on the tournament, which is most for a female tennis player in the Open Era.
The match against 24-year-old Muchova didn’t start good for Williams, as she was easily routed in the first set. Williams had a good effort in the second set, but couldn’t mount a comeback and ended up on a losing end of 6-3, 7-5 result.
Despite the early exit, Williams isn’t thinking about ending her career.
“I love this game,” said Williams after the game. “I’m good at what I do.”
“It’s easy to stay motivated and excited about doing something so amazing. Not many people get to do this,” she added.
In other matches, Venus’ sister Serena Williams successfully kicked off her campaign to win the 24th Grand Slam by beating No. 264 ranked Kristie Ahn. Serena is now set to face Russian tennis player Margarita Gasparyan in the second round.

]]>Djokovic revealed the news on social media, adding that he’ll also play at Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, which is scheduled to start on August 20th.
“I have trained hard with my team and got my body in shape so I am ready to adapt to new conditions,” said Djokovic. “I’ve done all the check-ups to make sure I am fully recovered, and I am ready to get back on court fully committed to playing my best tennis.”
Djokovic previously criticized the US Open organizers for strict safety and health protocols that are being planned due to coronavirus pandemic. However, after contracting the virus himself during the exhibition tournament he organized in his native Serbia, the 33-year-old player obviously changed his mind about the restrictions.
Novak Djokovic will chase his 18th Grand Slam and fourth US Open title in 2020. He’s set to have an easier path than in some previous years, as his biggest rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal decided to sit out the tournament. Federer had to skip the event due to surgery, while Nadal got out due to coronavirus concerns.
US Open is officially set to start on August 31st, and it will be the first Grand Slam tournament since the tennis season resumed.

]]>This update comes courtesy of a Twitter post by the Davis Cup official Twitter account, which features a video of Nadal practicing his forehand on a clay surface.
One of the main sources of doubt over Nadal’s ability to partake in the US Open comes as a result of the reshuffling of the ATP calendar, with the European clay season (including Roland Garros) being scheduled immediately after the American grand slam.
Nicknamed the King of Clay, Nadal has dominated the Roland Garros competition along with other clay-court events throughout his career and is known to favor these types of contests.
In addition, coach Carlos Moya also suggested that the Spanish player may not be able to participate in both Roland Garros and US Open due to his age—he is already 34-years-old.
Of course, coronavirus has also played a part in complicating the lives of sporting professionals. If Nadal was to compete in the US Open, he would be forced to quarantine for two weeks upon his arrival in Europe, thereby forcing him to miss both the Madrid Masters and the Rome Masters.

]]>Prior to the restart of the 2020 tennis season, there were plenty of doubts over whether or not tennis’s top stars would be able to compete in this year’s US Open due to the current pandemic. In order to combat such concerns, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) implemented a series of strict restrictions in order to enable the vent to take place.
In a press conference, Serena had plenty of praise for the USTA, explaining, “I feel like the USTA is going to do a really good job of ensuring everything is amazing and everyone is safe. It’s gonna be exciting. It’s been over six months since a lot of us have played professional tennis.”
“I’ll certainly miss the fans, don’t get me wrong. Just being out there with that New York crowd and hear everyone cheer, I’ll really miss that in some of those tough matches. But this is crazy, I’m excited,” she continued.

]]>While the Serbian national plans to perform in a variety of European-based events in the coming months, he remains unable to commit to the American tournament. This decision is in line with that of Rafael Nadal, who has already admitted that he feels uncomfortable to travel to the United States during the current health crisis.
Djokovic returned to tennis training in Belgrade this week, where he is currently preparing to perform in a number of clay court competitions across Europe. In addition to Roland Garros, Djokovic has expressed his intention to appear at the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome.
Not all tennis stars share the concerns of Djokovic and Nadal, however. Australian Open runner up Dominic Thiem stated that he has no issue with performing at both the US Open and Roland Garros if the opportunity presents itself. According to the Austrian player, he just feels grateful that he has several tournaments from which to choose.
As a result of schedule changes caused by the coronavirus shutdown, the US Open is set to begin on August 31st while Roland Garros will commence just under a month later.

]]>The US Open recently shared its health and safety protocols, conditions, and guidelines that tennis players will have to adhere to in the wake of ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Some of the rules include frequent testing, limited movability around New York, restrictions on a number of supporting staff players can bring, and possible isolation to hotel rooms.
Several top players expressed their concerns about these protocols, with No.1 tennis player in the world Novak Djokovic saying it would be “impossible” to play under these conditions. Halep agrees, saying that “given the conditions outlined in the U.S. Open announcement this morning, as of today I do not currently plan to play in NYC.”
In case that the situation improves and US Open tones down on the restrictions, Halep will revise her decision.
“I would like to underline that my decision is not set in stone,” she added.
While she emerged as one of the best tennis players in the world in recent years, winning the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019, Simona Halep hasn’t seen much success at the US Open. Halep never played in the finals at Flushing Meadows and has made it to the semi-finals just once. In the past three years, she hasn’t made it past the second round.

]]>The reason why Djokovic isn’t open to playing the tournament this year is possible coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions that might be imposed on the participants. This reportedly includes 14-day quarantine, restricted access to courts, and limited ability to move around New York.
According to the three-time U.S. Open champion, many other tennis players also have a negative stance about coming to New York and playing under these “extreme conditions.”
“Most of the players I have talked to were quite negative on whether they would go there,” Djokovic told Serbian national broadcaster RTS. “For me currently, as things stand, most probably the season will continue on clay at the beginning of September.”
According to this, Novak Djokovic would return to competitive tennis at French Open, where he would chase his second title, and 18th Grand Slam win. The tournament, initially scheduled to take place in late May, was recently postponed for September due to the coronavirus pandemic.
