After an injury-plagued stint with Manchester United, USWNT’s forward Tobin Heath will get a new chance to leave her stamp in England’s Women’s Super League. According to multiple reports, Heath is close to joining United’s rivals Arsenal on a free transfer.

UK media outlet Telegraph reports that the two sides have been engaged in negotiations for some time now, and the talks have been described as “positive.” There are few minor things left to sort out, including a second part of the player’s medical, after which Heath will ink a two-year deal.

Heath joined Man Utd in September 2020, inking a one-year deal with the club alongside her USWNT teammate Christen Press. The 33-year-old star had a great start in England, scoring four goals in eight matches and being selected WSL Player of the Month for November. Unfortunately, an ankle injury in January and subsequent knee injury sidelined her for the remainder of the season and prompted the club not to renew her contract.

Tobin Heath left the biggest mark in NWSL, where she played seven seasons with the Portland Thorns. She helped the club win two NWSL titles while earning a number of individual accolades, including the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year award in 2016.

Heath also found success with United States Women’s national team, being part of the squad that won two World Cups and two Olympics gold. She made a total of 177 international appearances and scored 35 goals.

Angel City FC has unveiled USWNT star forward Christen Press as the first signing in the franchise history. The NWSL side, which will play its inaugural season in 2022, confirmed the move on social media on Monday.

This marks the return to NSWL for Press, who spent the last season in England with Manchester United. The 32-year-old forward made 17 appearances in the Women’s Super League, scoring four times while adding one assist.

In order to sign Press, Angel City had to acquire her rights from Racing Louisville. The two clubs agreed to compensation that includes City’s first-round pick in 2022 NWSL Draft, $75,000 in allocation money, and roster protection.

Christen Press’s most recent stint in NSWL was with the Utah Royals FC, where she scored 10 goals in 25 games between 2018 and 2020. Previously, Press also played 60 games with Chicago Red Stars, finding the net 35 times.

Press has 155 appearances for United States Women’s National Team as well, scoring 64 times in international matches. She was part of USWNT’s roster that won two World Cup trophies and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Bringing in Press wasn’t the only piece of business for Angel City FC on Monday. The team also announced that Freya Coombe is joining the franchise as its first head coach. Combe is currently coaching NJ/NY Gotham FC.

Legendary United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) midfielder Carli Lloyd announced her retirement from professional soccer on Monday. Lloyd won’t immediately hang up her cleats, however, planning to play a number of national and club games before doing so.

Lloyd will receive a farewell tour with USWNT, being set to play in four friendlies in September and October. She will then play out the 2021 season of NWSL with NJ/NY Gotham FC before riding off into the sunset.

“Every single day I stepped out onto the field, I played as if it was my last game,” said Lloyd in a statement. “I never wanted to take anything for granted, especially knowing how hard it is to get to the top, but even harder to stay at the top for so long.”

Carli Lloyd is considered one of the best players in the history of the U.S. women’s national team. She won two World Cups in national jersey and was part of the USWNT teams that won two Olympic gold medals. The 39-year-old star played a total of 312 international games, placing her at No. 2 on the all-time list, and scored 128 goals, which rank fourth-most in USWNT history.

Lloyd started her club career by playing in several W-League clubs before joining NWSL’s NJ/NY Gotham FC (then known as Sky Blue FC). She also played with the Houston Dash and spent time on loan with Manchester City.

The US Women’s National Team won their second consecutive World Cup on Sunday afternoon, beating the Netherlands in the final by a 2-0 final score.

The favorites to win the tournament held up their end of the bargain, winning every single one of their matches in this edition of the World Cup, in a clean sweep that has led them to add another trophy to their resume.

The USWNT also won the World Cup in 2015, 1999, and 1991, meaning that they have won four of the eight Women’s World Cups since the competition was first held 28 years ago.

The American women dominated the game against the Netherlands, an upstart team that few expected to advance so far in the tournament, largely limiting their offensive chances and moving with relative ease in their zone.

The Dutch gave a valiant effort, expending lots of effort defensively in attempts to keep the Americans from scoring. The game actually went to the break with the score tied at 0-0, the first time the Americans were held scoreless in the first half all tournament.

They broke through in the 61st minute, however, when Dutch Stefanie van der Gragt was booked for a high and dangerous kick in the goal area on Alex Morgan. Megan Rapinoe cooly scored the penalty to put the Americans up 1-0.

Only 8 minutes later, USWNT forward Rose Lavelle scored a brilliant goal from long-distance to double the lead.

25 minutes later, the final whistle blew, and the Americans were named the world’s best once again.

The US Women’s National Team held on to beat England on Tuesday night by a 2-1 final score, qualifying them for the World Cup final in Lyon, France on Sunday afternoon.

The game was full of intense action and dramatic calls, but the US soldiered on top advance to their third consecutive World Cup final despite the absence of star forward Megan Rapinoe.

The US women grabbed an early 1-0 lead in only the 10th minute of the match when Rapinoe’s replacement, Christen Press, scored a header after a brilliant deep cross by Kelley O’Hara.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as Ellen White scored her 5th goal of the tournament with a cheeky back-heel kick that US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher could simply do nothing to stop.

Despite giving up a goal, the USWNT immediately went back to work and pushed for a goal. Lindsey Horan played a floated ball into the box, and flamboyant superstar Alex Morgan scored the 13th goal of her World Cup career on her 30th birthday. She mocked England with a memorable celebration that will go down in the history books.

In the second half, controversy arose when an England goal was ruled offside after a VAR revision in 67th minute.

England had another chance to tie in the 84th minute after a foul on White in the box. England defender Steph Houghton stepped up to the line to take the penalty, but her weak shot was saved by a diving Naeher, and England simply couldn’t create any more good chances.

The final whistle blew, and the USWNT euphorically celebrated qualifying for its third consecutive final. They’ll look to wrap up their second straight World Cup win on Sunday in Lyon.

The 2019 Women’s World Cup saw the most lopsided result in the competition’s history after the United States Women’s National Team thumped Thailand by a 13-0 final score in Reims on Tuesday night.

The Thai team, making only the second World Cup appearance in the national side’s history, was simply unable to compete with one of the competition’s favorites. Try as they might have, they simply had no answer for the United States’ long list of talented stars.

Alex Morgan scored 5 goals and recorded 3 assists in the opening game rout. Samantha Mewis added two goals of her own, while Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh, and Carli Lloyd also found the net.

Some viewed the Americans’ huge win as controversial, given that they did not seem to let off the gas after starting to dominate the match. Surprisingly, the game was only 3-0 at halftime.

The second half was when the American women really started to push and absolutely humiliated an overmatched Thailand squad.

The win was the most lopsided in the competition’s history, overtaking Germany’s 11-0 win over Argentina in the 2007 tournament.

Whether it was too ruthless of a victory or not, the USWNT now owns a huge cushion in the World Cup’s Group F. They will attempt to continue their march towards the top spot in the group on Sunday when they face off against Chile in Paris.
