Werder Bremen managed to keep the Bundesliga status on Monday after getting a 2-2 away drive against Heidenheim in the relegation playoff. Considering that the first match ended in 0-0, Bremen avoided relegation thanks to away goals.

USMNT’s forward Josh Sargent was in the starting lineup for Werder, helping his team get the early lead. While Sargent didn’t get on the score sheet himself, he was the last Bremen player to touch the ball before Norman Theuerkauf scored a spectacular own goal.

Werder kept the lead until 85′ minute when Tim Kleindienst scored an equalizer and gave Heidenheim a glimpse of hope. However, this didn’t last long as Ludwig Augustinsson got Bremen ahead again four minutes into overtime and secured that his team plays in Bundesliga in 2020/21 as well. Kleindienst scored his second goal from a penalty spot several minutes later but failed to make any real difference.

This is great news for Sargent as he looks to develop his game further by playing on a high level. The 20-year-old already received quality playing time with Bremen this season, scoring four goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances. He is expected to have an even bigger role next season while continuing to be one of the mainstays with the U.S. national team.
