According to reports, Timo Werner, RB Leipzig’s striker, is close to agreeing on a contract with Chelsea after the club activated his $62 million release clause to RB Leipzig.

The 24-year-old striker has previously been linked to several high-profile clubs including Liverpool and Juventus, but what seems like out of nowhere, Chelsea made the first move to bring the German to Stamford Bridge. Reportedly, Chelsea offered a contract worth $250,00 a week to Werner and they’re hopeful that he’ll accept the terms.

Chelsea’s been in need of a striker for a while now and they were originally interested in Lyon’s Moussa Dembele and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but after learning that Werner may be interested in moving to London, they decided to focus their efforts on him. They knew they had to act quickly as Werner’s release clause expires on June 15th and after that, he’ll come with a much higher price tag.

Since joining RB Leipzig in 2016, Werner has played 154 games and scored 92 goals, and he never had a season with less than 19 goals. He’s known as one of the best strikers in Europe. He’s played with the German national team since 2017, scoring 11 times in 29 games.
